I thought about this, but wouldn't I have to pay income tax on the whole $900,000 value of the property in the first year?  If you could sell it right away, it would be an easier bet.

$125 entry fee but the "essays" are a maximum of 200 words AND there has to be a minimum of 7500 entries for the contest to proceed. Seems legit.

So basically, they are raffling this place off.

Yeah that would be my biggest concern.

Yeah, I guess you can't say a whole lot in 200 words. When I read the rules I was surprised there wasn't some kind of interview process for the finalists. I did think it was interesting that the current owner of the inn actually won it through a similar contest in 1993. So weird!

I think it's a brilliant move on the owner's part. This thing has gone viral, and I suspect they'll get well over market value for the property. I'm honestly very tempted to give it a try. Owning a B&B was my first idea for achieving FIRE, before I even knew what FIRE was. I still like the idea of it.

As far as taxes - yeah, you're going to get reamed. So you have to take out a mortgage to pay the taxes. You still come out ahead by at least half a million. Immediate FI would be worth it. I doubt I'll apply, because I don't like the odds, but it's better than playing the lottery.
