At least he has access to his friend's apartment.  Crazy!

Not a terrible solution, but why did they make it so short?

$1300 to make and not even (apparently) paying for labor?? How expensive is a 4x8 sheet of 3/4" wood out there in San Fran? It's $40 here in Florida.

So basically a wooden crate. And it was funny to read that he has access to the rest of the apartment -- because what would the alternative be, really? It has no plumbing, insulation, or roof.

The SF bay area needs to do something about its housing costs soon. I have several coworkers who moved from CA specifically because of the housing market. Housing costs can't rise faster than inflation forever. At some point, companies simply won't be able to recruit employees at competitive salaries. If the job market tanks, there goes your tax base.

Awesome article! The only thing I can't understand is why in four months, his SL balance has only dropped about $6K. Hopefully, it's because he's front-loading his 401(k) first, and then focusing on eliminating debt. Good for him for thinking outside (inside?) the box on living arrangements!

That individual no longer lives in a truck.

That individual is also an idiot, which is the reason he no longer lives in a truck.

If you're going to do something like that, and the security people at your location turn a blind eye, blogging about it is pretty stupid.  Especially when that then leads to interviews with the news, and it makes a big splash.  Because now, there's no way the security people at your company can pretend they don't know about it when the city comes and says, "What the hell are you letting this go on for?"

With today's low mortgage rates, he should at least consider purchasing the box.
