But is there any way that you, you could just sock me out so there's no way that I'll know I'm at work? Right here (in my head)? Can I just come home and think I've been fishing all day or something?

At work I say to myself "all I have to do is not quit." Can you find a job where you'll make even more money so you can retire faster OP?

Changing your mindset helps. I used to be really stressed out about having to interact with people at work. I've done a lot of work on myself to get better at that.

You need to be a nice, politically correct, non-sexually-harassing conformant guy to perform best in a team, but these behaviors are a facade that's hard to maintain for long.

Maybe take a class on feminism so you learn why its important not to sexually harass your co-workers.

But to your original question OP, works sucks for me because I have to leave my house when I don't want to. I have to see people I don't want to see, and work on things I don't want to work on.

If you want a social life:

Blues dancers are awesome. I moved to the NYC area from Phoenix last fall and started slipping a little towards depression - missed the desert, didn't really know anyone...then I found the blues dance community here and made a habit of going. Now I'm happy and don't miss AZ at all.

Well if it makes you feel better, I'm one of those people that makes under 100k and I feel almost the same about my job. Although I don't find it too challenging to behave in a "non- sexually-harassing manner", it's called respect. I think you are joking about that part (I hope you are anyway), if not you may want to see a therapist.

I can't pick and choose my hours, I have to be at work 40 hours a week. There are days when I hardly work, although I could be working on special downtime projects, and there are other days that are non stop.

I'll be working for 25 years but mostly because I spent 10-12 years saving nothing.

Well, I sort a feel for you but I'm also fucking envious. You should be FIRE in 5 years so suck it up or change to another company in a year or two.

Could be your not challenged by your work?  You don't sound as if you have any passion in it at all. What made you choose this career?  Why did you stay in school, all the way through a Ph.D.?  Did you work at all during your schooling?  Would academia suit your personality better?  Would starting your own company suit you better?

Maybe you're also terrifically goal oriented and if you aren't chasing down a particular goal, then the routine just doesn't satisfy you. Have you identified goals at work?

I think the part about having to focus on not sexually harassing others and on not watching porn identifies that you may have an addiction or an unhealthy view of women?  Therapy could be your next goal.

Other than that, work sucks for most people. I used to love my job and then I started working for a dickweed who makes my life unchallenging and stifles my creativity. Now I hate going in in the morning. I sleep more Han I ever have because I'm avoiding going to work. But I get paid good money too and I am just trying to outlast the ass.

Identity clash: You need to be a nice, politically correct, non-sexually-harassing conformant guy to perform best in a team, but these behaviors are a facade that's hard to maintain for long. Related to #3 above. Somewhat important IMO.

Do you realize how this reads? Or are you perfectly aware? Hopefully you really don't consider refraining from sexual-harassment to be a facade.

I say suck it up and quit being so dramatic (given your situation). There's plenty of more laid-back positions all around you that I'm sure you'd be qualified for. Do you have much debt?

Yeah, unless that was a poorly phrased sentence he may be better off staying clear of the blues scene.  They don't put up with that shit.

Aw, OP already deleted it before I got to read it. Am I reading these responses right though? Was the reason he hates his job seriously because he's not allowed to sexually harass people??? That's a new one.

I don't hate my job.  I just feel like I am in prison.   And while I am at work, I like to be busy.  I like to learn.  I am not really learning anything new.  And I have an awful lot of down time.  Now if I was telecommuting or if work was truly flexible I could run off and do something else during those down times.

Also, being here like this, takes time away from doing other things that I need to do such as work around the house.

I am in this boat. I am not challenged or stimulated by my work and find it very tedious and unsatisfying, but it is much less stressful than the job I had 7 years ago and I only took this job to get away from that one. I have a liberal arts degree, so I feel I don't have any technical or other sort of readily marketable skills I could fall back on and getting another job feels way too risky. I'm not interested in doing more of what my current job is which is administrative/office support.  I have ADD and it is very hard to focus at work, so my only real work goal is someday hit FI and get out of this. I'd like to think I'll find more satisfying work one day, but I've come to accept like you say that work sucks and I just need to suck it up and get through it.
