YNAB 75% off via Steam
« on: December 31, 2014, 07:30:29 AM »
I've been waiting to pull the trigger till it went on sale myself.  It's now only $15 instead of the normal $60!!!!  If you aren't familiar with Steam, it's a front-end video game store for computers.  You can buy the game via steam and then pull the product key out of steam and remove steam from your computer if you don't want it.  Very much worth the effort to save $45.

Thanks--I was going to drop the whole idea after my free trial…decided to use my old paper/pencil method for 2015. But for $14.99 I went for it. I'll try to use YNAB while backing myself up with paper/pencil…just for this year…due to some major life transitions I want to be extremely detailed and picky about finances in 2015.

Is it really that good? I've never really used budget software - I sort of use Mint, but I haven't seriously used it.  I'm willing to try, but trying not to spend money on unnecessary stuff.

Is this tool still useful for those of us who have been successfully operating on spreadsheets?

It has a great interface for importing bank/cc statements.  Once categorized, you can export everything in one CSV, which I find very useful in excel :)

The original YNAB was an excel spreadsheet at one point.  It probably could be done in Excel today, just not as easily.  At $60, I could see myself being hesitant.  At $15, my time to create and maintain a spreadsheet is worth more than $15.  You can download the demo for free and take a look.  It takes a little getting used to, but once it clicks, it's awesome.

i'm not buying ynab, though it seems really great and highly recommended, i will avoid buying it this year and probably buy it next year. this year i'm still living with parents and i just track all my accounts into an excel spreadsheet and watch the value go up. once i move out of the house then i'll probably need ynab but that can wait.

I bought on Steam 18 months ago for $15.  THE BEST $15 I ever spent!  Highly recommend it.
