Who Already Received Their Stimulus Check?
« on: April 13, 2020, 03:57:34 AM »
IRS announced that folks who filed their 2018/2019 taxes and had DD as their preferred payment method started receiving checks on Saturday April 11th.

Wife and I meet the criteria and haven't seen anything yet. Can anyone confirm that they have in fact seen a direct deposit hit their accounts today?

I think I'm getting a small amount.  My gross income would make me ineligible but my AGI is under $99K.

I'm more interested in seeing if MMMers who get SS have received their DD?  My mom is bugging me and I have checked--I understand SS people do not have to do anything if they have DD set up for their monthly deposits.  Uncle Sam will deposit the 1,200 to the same DD account without any action taken by the recipient.

I *think* you have to have an electronic direct deposit account number already set up with the IRS ( not with social security, which is a different dept).   Even if SS is going to you via direct deposit, and SS has your account number, the IRS won't use the same account to make your $1,200 direct deposit. You need to have established an electronic setup with the IRS specifically. That's what I get from reading stuff online. Looks like people in that situation will get a paper check mailed to their addresses starting on April 24, 2020.

We should get a small amount based on our 2019 AGI, checked the bank account today and nothing has arrived yet.

We are ok either way, planned to let it sit in the bank account in case my mom needs some help since she is out of work due to Covid.

My uncle that gets snap of $16 per month (food stamps) and Social security said he had an extra $400 deposited into his snap account and so did the other people that he knows.

Dynamic situation...but this is my understanding.  Motley Fool may be behind the curve if policy has changed.

https://www.fool.com/investing/2020/04/13/some-social-security-beneficiaries-need-to-act-now.aspx

The U.S. Treasury Department recently announced that Social Security beneficiaries who aren't typically required to file a tax return won't need to take any special action to get a $1,200 stimulus payment. Because of this, most Social Security beneficiaries don't have to take any special action -- the payment will be automatically paid in the same manner as their Social Security benefits.

Just hit the bank account this morning. Our bank typically processes and releases funds a day early, so it will likely reach a lot of other people tomorrow.

If it helps anyone else, we filed by paper last year and did DD. I was a little concerned that not filing online was going to mess with it, but it ended up fine.

My partner received her deposit yesterday.   I'm not getting one.  Maybe I'll reduce my spending by $1200 during self-quarantine to make up for it.

It hit for us today.  I feel bad because we DON'T need it, but then I recall the years of six figure tax bills while I was employed and don't feel toooo bad.  I need produce so I am going to go to the open air wholesale market by me and buy a bunch of cases of produce (think 30lbs tomatoes for 8 dollars). Help support the local growers and then I'll give it away to folks in the neighborhood that are out of work, of which there are many

We did. Two adults and five dependents - huge advance from next year's taxes. Kind of insane. Plus, our employer used the CARES act to push out an extra $500 on the next paycheck. At least in the short term, we're holding a boatload of cash. It's a bit insane.

Thank you all for the update. Did anyone who sees a check happen to have Bank of America?

Wife and I qualify for full amount based on 2019 income, and have already filed/received our tax return by DD for 2019, in 2018 we weren't married and she would qualify for full amount but I wouldn't get anything if they used 2018.

We don't have any indication of a pending transaction with BoA

Thought I'd answered, but it must have been another thread with the same question.  We filed 2019 taxes several weeks ago, IRS has our direct deposit info, and we should be eligible for the full stimulus amount.

Our credit union notifies us several days in advance of incoming deposits, and it shows nothing pending.

I think patience is called for here.  It seems a little crazy to expect the feds to be able to transmit millions upon millions of deposits within just a day or two. ETA: Also, the way your question is worded, it is more likely to attract all the people who have happened to receive their deposits, and obscure the number of people who have not.

Not with Bank of America but did file my 2019 taxes about a month and a half ago and as far as I can tell we should qualify.

No deposit or pending deposit as of yet.

I'd say you should see it if you filed 2019 long enough ago to give the IRS a fair amount of time to process.

At worst if the IRS is using your 2018 taxes you'll get her $1200 now and can get your $1200 later when you file 2020 taxes next year.

We recieved federal refund on 2/24, and filed on 2/15, so hopefully long enough!

@2Birds1Stone

We were on a similar time-frame. However, we recently received a mailer indicating the IRS had changed our refund amount. All of the numbers in the letter matched exactly with what we filed, including the refund we've already received. Will be interesting to see if we get a 2nd refund and / or the stimulus check and when.

Coworker received his today, $1,700 for him plus one kid, hadn't filed his 2019 taxes yet.

I don't usually see pending deposits with my main bank, nothing yet. Expecting $5,400 but it's all getting donated.

Let's be very realistic. It's going to take months for all the payments to go out, between ACH and check. Yes, ACH will be faster than check, but that doesn't mean it'll be instantaneous. I wouldn't be surprised if the stimulus payments are released over a couple weeks.

1. The IRS has been understaffed for years.
https://www.fedweek.com/federal-managers-daily-report/irs-staffing-up-but-impact-of-decline-still-felt/

2. They're probably trying to use existing systems that were designed for something else to do something quite unusual. At least a couple years ago, the systems the IRS is using were nearly 60 years old. Which means - old mainframe, and it's in Assembly language. Those systems do not turn on a dime. If they aren't careful, they could break the whole darn thing and then we're really screwed.

https://www.nextgov.com/it-modernization/2018/03/irs-system-processing-your-taxes-almost-60-years-old/146770/

3. I'm not an expert but I know some of the underpinnings for the banking system use COBOL. My guess is that the system is, overall, old. Unless you really want to crash the banking system, you probably shouldn't release ALL of the payments onto those systems all at once, in addition to the normal load. Some staggering seems wise.

4. You are assuming that the Federal government is competent. While individuals in the Federal government are competent, I have seen very little evidence to indicate that the Feds as a whole are competent. Incompetence slows things down.

I didn't see anything when I did my banking this weekend. I'll check next weekend when I do my banking.

WTF does your 2018 income have to do with needing stimulus in a pandemic in the middle of 2020?  I know they have to base it on something, it just seems so disconnected from the reality people are facing right now.

Probably because the 2019 filing deadline was extended by 90 days to July 15.

Should have literally just sent it to everyone @frugalnacho. A short-term, nationwide UBI experiment.

Only would have cost around 10% more too.

Yeah I know, like I said they have to base it on something, it just seems so disconnected.  My situation in April 2020 is not anything like it was in 2018, and I imagine that's true for a lot of people.  People that are fully employed in high paying jobs right now can qualify because their income was lower in years past,  while people that had high paying jobs in 2018 but are currently unemployed don't qualify - that's backwards.

They do qualify, they just won't see it until they file their 2020 taxes.  They may also be assuming anyone making twice the median wage should be able to have some savings to weather a bit of time off until then.  There is also an additional $600/week in unemployment benefits they would be getting, and an additional 13 weeks of their regular state benefits if they were running out.  That hypothetical person will be well taken care of.

My bank notified me that I should get $1,200 deposited tomorrow.

I did a little bit of shopping in March. A new pair of shorts for summer, some books, went out for coffee, and bought a pitcher and glasses for serving cocktails. Everything came from a small business (because cluck Amazon and Jeff Bezos). It cost less than $200 total I think.

The rest of the money I'm going to keep as a savings cushion. I could use some liquid savings in case shirt hits the fan later.

Just deposited right after my paycheck. $5,400. As much as I could really use that to replace my vehicle, invest more in my business, or save for our kids I know that my wife's sister needs it far more than we do.

$3,900 hit the account this morning. Usually I can see a pending transaction 24hr before it posts, but PNC was having all sorts of Mobile/Online Banking issues these last couple days so I didn't get positive confirmation until the DD alert email popped up.

Since I owed money this past year, they didn't have my direct deposit information.  I was able to update it here so I don't have to wait for a paper check in the mail.

$2,335 pending in my account this morning (4/15). Married filing jointly, no dependents, and in the phase-out range based on 2018. We actually filed 2019 yesterday (4/14) because our AGI was lower but the check was still based on 2018.
