Beer from Bread (inspired mustacian business practices)
« on: May 28, 2018, 10:12:49 AM »
I thought I would start a thread to call out mustacian business practices.

I'll start with Toast Beer.  Business model is to reduce food waste by using 30% leftover bread from restaurants and bakeries to replace 'fresh' malted barley in beer making.  Saves money, reduces wasted food, reduces landfill or trash which feeds rodents in trash bins, tastes great.

Win, win.

Any others youve seen or heard about?

I hadn't heard of this until I saw your post, but I dreamed it up myself about two years ago. I discussed it with friends, one of whom is a baker .. she thought it was a great idea. There is a non-zero chance that I'd pursue something like this in my second act. It's good to know that others are succeeding with this model, but kinda sucks to be a follower.

I know a startup in Amsterdam that does it exactly the other way around - they use Brewer's Spent Grain, a wasteproduct from beer breweries, to bake bread.

Hungry Harvest just expanded to my area. It’s a produce delivery service that works with grocery stores and growers to reduce food waste by delivering boxes of imperfect/surplus but still good produce to subscribers. I know they also donate produce to organizations that serve the poor. We eat a lot of veggies, like to cook, aren’t picky, and have pet rabbits who also love veggies so I signed up for the $23 large box. The first one should arrive this weekend and I’m excited to see what we get.

We have been doing the $15 box for at least 6 months. I think it helps our cooking, you get handed ingredients you may not seek out on your own. More variety. You can mark a few items as "I never want this." There has been no issue with the actual produce.

Cool! We are definitely hoping to expand our horizons. I didn’t see anything on the list that we definitely don’t want, but loved the option to choose favorites. Hopefully that will mean a few extra spaghetti squashes and poblano peppers.

Pizza joints are the #1 volume of restaurant types...lol...pepperoni flavored ale in the works, perhaps?
