Which budget cell carriers are compatible with Venmo?
« on: November 24, 2021, 06:20:09 AM »
I have been a Republic wireless customer for several years but have grown tired of the unreliability.  I also wish I could use Venmo for convenience.  Which carrier can I switch to?  5g preferred.

Why do you specifically need Venmo for "convenience"?  I personally use Mint Mobile, and I am very happy with the service.  I pay once a year (like $250) and have cell service for the whole year.  Doesn't get any more convenient than that!

Venmo doesn't work with republic wireless? As in 'incompatible' or as in 'inconsistent'?

I'm confused by the question. Venmo is an app and I am not aware that there is any cell carrier that the app wouldn't work on? You don't even need to have data turned on if you are using wifi? Are you trying to pay your phone bill using Venmo? If so, I didn't realize that was ever an option!

As in Venmo won't let you complete sign up without a text verification that they will not send to a Republic Wireless phone number. Honestly I find this more a reason to not use Venmo than to not use Republic Wireless, but I also had this happen with BlueVine when setting up a business checking account and wound up with Novo Bank instead.

If you signed up for Venmo pre-republic-wireless probably still works, even if you ported your number over to them. But trying to sign up for Venmo once already on Republic is impossible.

Oh interesting. I did not know that was an issue. Thanks for clarification. If it helps, I set up venmo when I was using Google Fi, but have since switched to Mint and Venmo still works. My phone number is from 15 years ago though and I originally had Verizon - so maybe it is a verizon number?

Republic (which I use) utilizes VOIP I believe, but I've always found a workaround. I have not tried to set up Venmo.

I have (pet sitter prefers Venmo payments) - even texts to the underlying cell number fail. Using the "real" number Venmo tells you that you have to enter a cell phone number. But my wife, who is also on Republic has Venmo that pre-dates us moving over to Republic and it still works.

Most providers should work for you, Venmo is probably an exception. I have heard of people having these issues when trying to use google voice free numbers, as the number gets flagged as a VOIP number. Unfortunately, there is a good chance that now that your number is flagged, moving to a different provider may not fix it quickly at all, even with a no longer voip number, as it is still "flagged". I assume this CAN be fixed, but it might be just as much of a pain as getting a totally new phone number. If this IS a concern, you could get a new number while also porting your old one to a free google voice number to help you transition without missing calls and messages from people.

(Note, this is all anecdotal and related to people previously using google voice, not republic)

We switched from Republic to Total Wireless a few years back, love it. We have 4 lines for $106/mo including taxes, unlimited talk, text, data. Works on the Verizon network, no issues with any app I've ever downloaded, Venmo included.

I use mint mobile, 0 complaints.   Once a year I get a funny Christmas card with Ryan Reynolds on it.   This year I got a little Ryan Christmas tree ornament.

Not really a selling point, but there's some personality to the company.   It's cheap and runs on TMobile and wifi. Since wfh I'm always in wifi. Never had a missed or dropped call.

Charter Spectrums new deal looks good.   We have the $45 unlimited monthly for a business line, but they just added 2 lines for 29.99 each for unlimited and it runs on Verizon.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
