When I figured this out, I $#!+ bricks
« on: January 12, 2016, 07:32:51 PM »
Every $100 you spend is going to cost you a penny a day for the rest of your life.

Probably more, actually. The above assumes your money only earns 3.65% annually, but this figure is close enough to the typical 4% SWR to make a good analogy.

Makes me spend less when I think of all my expenditures in this way!

not just for the rest of your life, but to whoever you choose to leave it to until the end of capitalist civilisation/expansion/innovation.

Hah. I feel this kind of mindset can lead to madness.

A penny a day sounds severe, but if I figure at 34 I have 50 years left, that's only $182.50.

Yup, that's another way to think of it. So at age 34, if you're gonna live to be 84, then your $100 expenditure really costs you $282.50. If made at age 75, the $100 expenditure only costs you $132.85.

The 18 year old who spends $100 of his first paycheck for some frivolity, really spends $340.90.

Or one final other way... at age 57, things cost double. At age 30, things cost triple.

And I totally agree that this type of thinking will eventually lead to madness! But it's a really fun and interesting way to play with the numbers. It also turns me into a cheapass scrooge.

and if a frog had wings he wouldn't bump his ass when he hopped!

you can play the if game all day and just make yourself crazy. If i invested the money i spent dating anyone who isn't my wife, I would have a lambo in my garage. but if I left for school one minute later on a random tuesday I would be hit by a bus instead of just bored in traffic. I'm trying to play less of these games about the past, and more about the future... If I put this money in Vanguard now, I will have more later. Vacation now or vacation home in 20 years?

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
