Missing Money Site
« on: February 18, 2015, 01:19:43 PM »
One of my favorite blogs (Hip2Save) reminded me today about a site I think mustacians would like - a site where you can search your name, and your relatives names, and see if you are owed money by things like utility companies and life insurance companies. It is legit - www.missingmoney.com.

If you have never checked it out, I recommend you do. I have never found money for anyone yet except my aunt, who refuses to claim it.

Hope this helps someone!

Yeah I found like $150 I was owed by State Farm back in 2007 when I changed insurance companies and they sent me a check to my dad and I.  I put it in my desk and was going to get my dad to sign the check, but forgot.  Somehow the check disappeared and I forgot all about it.

My father and both grandfathers were accountants who never lost track of a penny. Nothing for me here. But hey, my ex-sister-in-law has some!

Good reminder.  We got ~$80 back last year from some refund that fell through the cracks twenty years ago.  It's worth at least a quick look.

You can also go to Unclaimed.org and search by state. What's crazy is I've told a few friends that they have unclaimed money out there and none of them have gone out to claim it. I was thrilled when I found about $200 between DH and I

I got about $150 back a few months ago. Posted about it on FB, with a link, but friends actually thought it was a scam, and the more I said, "No, it's legit!" the more they gave it the side eye, like it was some kind of pyramid or ponzi scheme. (WTF?!?!)

My sister, dad, and grandma have all gotten unclaimed money back.

I have $1.00 but the claim requires you mail a form to the state of Texas.  I figure once I get a stamp, an envelope, and printer ink, it isn't worth it.

Hello ladies and gentlemen! Long time lurker, first time poster. I'm on these forums daily, reading the threads and now I'm ready to get this ball rolling. I'm working on my emergency fund now, and I saw this thread, clicked the link, and I have 3 claims on that site. 2 of them say "under $100" and one says "above $100". Great news! I plugged in my info, now I'm waiting on the state to contact me.

I'm just curious about how your guys and gals are getting exact numbers owed to you, but I am getting such vague descriptions of how much money is owed to me.

$100 from an old job in another state. I need to find some sort of proof of address from 15 years ago to claim it though.  I found a few hundred for friends and family too.

It depends on your state as to how they show the amount of money. Some people are also talking about money they already got on this site, so that is how they know. Might as well try and find out!

I think a marriage license or other official document (depending on why the name change) should work. I would try it!

Thats Massachusetts for you! Thanks for the info, I have already sent in my claims. The site says I have to wait up to 4 weeks. Can't wait to see how much it is!!!

The three largest unclaimed accounts all belong to Good Earth Enterprises. Almost 3 million CAD in total. Anyone know how sums that large end up in an unclaimed accounts database? I can't imagine that someone forgot about them.

Nothing for me, but I just found at least $150+ for my mother in law, $10-25 for my neighbor, and $100 for a coworker!

That's pretty fun.

I had to write the state a letter, with a form, and a copy of my driver's license and some other information (my dad's driver's license too, since his name was on the check).  I also had to confirm some information, which I couldn't because it was nonsensical.  It had the address as my brother's apartment street address and number, but my dad's town (which is 3 hours away) and some other information, all of which made the address complete nonsense.  I explained that in the letter, and received a check in a month or so.

so the site says i have "over $100" sitting out there somehow.

apparently the check is on the way... for $235   WTH, there is no way i would have just abandoned an account with $5 in it, much less $235

the odd thing is that this $$ is related to me at my rental property address, meaning it would have had to been "abandoned" in only the past 8 years.  i know 100% that i dont have any checking accounts I forgot about in that time frame.

So...
Question...

Does anyone know if they are going to provide me any additional background on where this money came from at all?

It would be great to know if this was really a checking account I screwed up and lost, if its an odd escrow account I didn't know about that got orphaned in a past mortage re-fi, etc...

Found some of my deceased b-i-l, Hubs was executor so we had the copy of death cert. sitting here in the lockbox.  Over $100.  Paperwork filled out and waiting to go to the mailbox in the morning.  It will probably be very little and will be split w/his remaining siblings, but hey, THANKS!

Possibly for my other b-i-l, still waiting for call back.  Over $100.
For my great-uncle who passed years ago, and his wife passed just a couple years back, so am trying to get ahold of my   Dad's cousins now. Over $100.
For my niece's husband and possibly his brother.  All over $100.
For my stepmom's grandson. 2 accounts over $100.
For my sister's ex-husband.  Over $100.

I found some old credit union money for one of my sisters step-son and grandson, and some money for one of my brothers-in-law from old stock his parents had, and the parents have been dead and gone for a long time.

I have no idea how much, as Michigan doesn't disclose that, but I'll bet the stock money is substantial.

Thanks for reminding me.  I had found like $10 owed to me on the California official site a while back, but didn't want to deal with jumping through the hoops to claim (mail various forms, plus copy of ID, etc.).  Didn't seem worth the time and energy for $10.

Just checked again and now there's like $20 and they do online processing now.  So I submitted a claim within a couple minutes.

Found $137.50  for my husband. But it is apparently co-held by his father, so we need a copy of his Dad's SS card to get it. Not sure how likely that is going to be.

well my $$ arrived in the time frame they suggested.
no explanation of where the money was from, just a check and a 'receipt'.

oh well. $235.02 richer today, works for me.

Hmmm, wonder how I do this.

Found like $250 in liquidated stocks that my (late) father bought in my name that may have been there for years.  How do you prove that was your address if you were a minor at the time?  I certainly didn't have any bills in my name at that address...

Thanks for the link! I didn't have any unclaimed money out there, but we found out that my husband had $160 of unclaimed money from an old tax return when he lived in another state. Sweet :)
