Whats your favorite Kitchen item from 2016?
« on: January 02, 2017, 06:07:27 PM »
I love cooking and all the rewards that comes with it, so whats your favorite gadget or tip and tricks from 2016?

So far the most used items in 2016 are the 2 chef's knives, paring knife and these Flour Sack Towels from Amazon.

Instant pot - also the o lay kitchen item I purchased in 2016. I am generally leery of kitchen appliances, particularly anything that is really hyped. I think the instant pot lives up to its claims.

I do appreciate my good knives and pots - all of which are almost 30 years old now (Henkel and all Clad).

The instant pot was the only new kitchen thing I bought last year.  And I love it.

I will also say... having nice pots/pans and amazing knives (Henkels as well!) makes cooking so much more enjoyable.

My Chef's Choice Electric Knife Sharpener.

It is such a joy to always have razor sharp knives in the kitchen.

Best purchase ever for my kitchen.

knives and cutting board. I make alot of large salads with alot of veggies in them so alot of chopping! Nothing better than a good knife and a cutting board to be efficient and be clean and quick!

This year I bought both an Instant Pot and an immersion blender.  Both are excellent at what they do.  Instant Pot takes up a bit of space though (but not much more than a typical Crock Pot, which I still also have).  Best part of the immersion blender is that it takes only a few seconds to clean.

Of 2016.... Insta pot. So far I've mastered only a couple of recipes, but the tracks are being a weekly favorite. Kid love them and I can have dinner ready with only 10 min am prep.

We got a blender (Vitamix S30, most of the cost covered by a company long service award voucher) a few months ago. Definitely a top quality item and one we're already using regularly for smoothies and soups, and plan to use for other things as well (next ideas hummus, almond milk as trials, could become regulars if successful). Also got a non-stick oven tray, which has impressed in its first couple of uses. It's not really a revelation in itself but should mean we use much less greaseproof paper, so over time will pay for itself multiple times over.

In terms of ongoing use, two good chef's knives and bamboo chopping boards are staples. At one point I thought that a high-end non-stick frying pan was really important, but actually we have a standard-price (but not really cheap) one that we use on average once a day and after two years it's still like new, showing that for these kinds of items if you look after them they will last.

Three from 2016:
-induction range. I am in love.
-garlic press. I'd always either bought pre-minced or chopped it up myself. Oh my god. Never, ever, ever going back. Fresh garlic is unparalleled, and it is SO EASY
-metal coffee pour over cone. I like to limit my exposure to plastics (hippy alert), plus now we don't need coffee filters! Added bonus is it preserves the "nuttier" flavor aspects of our coffee. Unexpected, but totally welcome, benefit.
Honorable mention: instant pot. I would keep it for the ease of artichokes alone. It doesn't make the list though since I bought it in 2015 (black friday).

My Le Creuset casserole dish.
*ducks face punch*  Yes, yes, I know it is spendy.  I don't mind paying for longevity and quality though.  From what I read and how this looks/feels, I should have this for many decades.  This was a replacement for a Pyrex dish I had which only lasted me 15 years before it decided to shatter in my oven making one Hell of a mess and ruining my salmon :(

On the other end of the spectrum, silicone pastry brushes.  Cheap, and my husband can't melt them using them for bbq sauce on the grill :)

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
