What Would You Do (Job Decisions)
« on: February 24, 2017, 10:17:29 AM »
What would you do?

Current role:
  • No progression available (superiors will not move on for an extended period)
  • Good wage, good employer
  • Get paid travel allowance (always paid) and expenses for all trips (2 days@ £1.85/day, 3 days@ £3.76/day)
  • Travel 2 days/week plus a whole bunch of extra travel nationally (25% - 30% of time)
  • I relatively enjoy the job though
  • I find myself biting my nails a lot and generally feeling tired
  • I am at the job cap with no ability to earn more
  • Performance related bonus available (typically 5.5%

Informal offer for a new role:
  • Could be exciting ; will be busy
  • Pays a little more (5%) and keep travel allowance (always paid)
  • Does not pay travel expenses for standard trips (5 days/week - ie, extra commute) (3 days @ £9.75/day, 2 days @ £17.10/day (caveat: OR 2 days @ £3.76/day)
  • Will pay expenses for actual travel (5% - 10% of time)
  • Start at bottom cap for role, ability to increase this 30% over time
  • No bonuses but higher wage increases

Prior to the applying, I was ruminating over whether or not I should apply for this role as I wasn't sure it was exactly what I wanted to do.
After the interview, I realized that I did want the job, and I was disappointed when I was unsuccessful.

This is for a different job within the same team (with more scope for improving wages)

I won't achieve a higher wage carrying on in my current career role (but might perhaps outside the company after I'm qualified).

I'd be minded to go for it in terms of "short term pain" but then I am about to be subject to a new baby!

Would this come with more responsibilities? How is it going to affect the time you use for planning and acting on FIRE?

@JustJane - had a good discussion today, and will do more over the weekend.
Wifey basically recognises im not exactly happy or settled in my current role.  Concerns around additional commute time and increasing commute cost, and no bonus potential.  Though she does say decision is mines, she is not unhappy or against it.

@omega13 - It would be an equally responsible role as I have just now, but without being "more responsible" (as in its not a "managers" job).  As for FIRE; the base wage is higher, so more money will go into my workplace pension as pensionable pay is increased (resulting an extra £20 per month / £250 per year - so no big bones).  But overall no impact on FIRE date in short term.  As there is no bonuses, i believe the pay increases are more substantial (but not by much, though compounding over time it may be worthwhile).  I worked out my last 2 bonuses were around 2% - hardly anything to shout about.

It is a more specialist role, but it is "within the business" so a bit more scope to move about.  Less exposure to workplace politics (i think).
