Our big plan was always lots and lots of travel.  Man plans, God laughs.  We ended up living in Europe and do a ton of travel and while there are plenty of places we still want to see or want to revisit, much of our retirement travel is done and we aren't sure we will want to travel at the levels we'd imagined.

If I end up finishing library school, I might like a FIRE job (ha!) at a local school, library, or university.  perhaps in conjunction with volunteering.  Yoga.  Perhaps teaching dance or color guard at a high school or junior high.  Tons of reading. Some sort of crafting.

I do worry tremendously about DH and what he will do.  He works insanely long hours, and his hobby is basically work.  He'll put in an 80 hour week and then spend 5 hours on the weekend watching videos on Sharepoint so he can optimize some process.  I think he might enjoy gardening, and hopefully he can find another activity or two.

Our very loose plan is to move to an active senior community when we are of age (usually they require someone in the household to be 55+) and those places have a zillion groups and activities and clubs, which will be great for trying out things and seeing what sticks, as well as for cultivating a robust social life.

This reminds me. Back in college I had a professor have everybody write their own "Bucket List" of at least 200 things. Most of us figured we'd never be able to get to all the things on our lists (which was the point) but it really helped to specify a whole ton of goals and make you realize how much you can do.

Maybe there should be some sort of online course to slap some sense into people who think they'll be bored if they retire.

  • Golf
  • Physical fitness
  • Language-learning (Russian, German, Spanish)
  • Travel*
  • Autodidacticism
  • Collecting (not yet sure what I'll be collecting)
  • Entrepeneurship (I have lots of ideas)
  • Yoga or Qigong
  • Volunteer work and/or charitable giving
  • Golf
  • Golf
  • More golf...

*Specifically, I want to see the ancient megalithic sites of South America. Machu Picchu, Ollantaytambo, etc. I eventually want to travel the world but I would go to South America first.

Hopefully we will retire to a few acres and build/rebuild a reasonably energy efficient house.   We'll have a big garden and get plenty of exercise tending the garden.   The basic idea is to reduce living costs giving us more of a cushion.

I want to learn everything I can about Autodidacticism.

Seriously, I had to look it up.

I have like four different organizations begging me to get more involved in a leadership capacity, and I just don't have the time.  I imagine I will always have to say no to most of them, but I might try one for the first year and then consider expanding from there.

Right now I'm working full time and raising three kids.  When I find an hour to myself to just rock out with my ukulele, I tend to think I could happily do so for like six hours a day every day and never get tired of it, but I'm pretty that's not true.   I think many of the activities that I most enjoy now are things that I enjoy a little extra precisely because I get to do them so infrequently, so in retirement I may have to introduce some structure to my schedule to keep from overdosing.  Ukulele is a powerful drug.

It's still a long way off, but there are so many things I'd like to learn/do. I'd like to learn to garden and paint. I want to keep writing (even if the result is lousy). I want to spend time raising my (future) kids. I'll read a lot. I'm sure I'll develop more interests between now and then.

I have so many I'll be working overtime!

1) Getting (more) fit. More running, cycling, beach walks.

2) Growing my current side gigs: freelance writing, a niche agricultural service I provide that's growing without any advertising or effort (and that I love), and talks and workshops about that agricultural niche that I've been doing for free at fiber festivals and such, but that I think I can also do in yarn shops, Waldorf and Montessori schools, and more.

3) I wrote a book about my agricultural employment adventures and am going to start looking for an agent or publisher. If it doesn't pan out, I'll self publish.

4) Selling woodworking items I make online, as well as some patterns for them. I'm working on designing my furniture patterns to be more like sewing patterns, in terms of guidance and instruction.

5) Freelancing doing the parts of my career that I like most: user research, technical editing, stuff like that.

Now that's what I'm talking about!  You've got a real winner plan there.

I know exactly what I want to do...
I want to run my small hobby boutique and Internet business service website. I want to experience more of Japan and live there for a few month per year or even longer but that would require a different visa status other than a tourist visa.

My "retirement" or rather my financial independence as I have no plans to stop earning money once I quit working for someone else will require a few key pieces other than the financial assets. Which I am working on in parallel to the accumulation of capital.

At the moment I am writing my webservice application and website and I just signed up for a few courses in intermediate Japanese. At some point I will have to get a Bachelor's degree as well.

This is a great example of a person knowing what they want to retire TO and working a plan to be ready to hit the ground running when FIRE day arrives.  Great role model.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
