What to see in flagstaff AZ and thereabouts?
« on: December 16, 2014, 04:06:14 PM »
Our vacation this year will be to Flagstaff AZ.  Our 5-days of lodging and air are free.  We will rent a vehicle and may stay extra days to go see a national park in Utah.  We may fly in and out of Vegas  but I am not sure.  I want it to be a reasonable vacation but make the most of it because we may never get out to that area again.  Our kids are 10, 8 and 6.  Thanks!

I was there recently and did a kind of canyon escalation tour
- Walnut Canyon (fairly small park, ancient pueblo buildings set into rock shelters)
- Oak Creek Canyon (a nice drive down to Sedona, which is just an amazing place)
- whats that other one again? oh yes, the Grand Canyon. Also worth a look.

As use drive south toward Sedona there is Split Rock park, water cascades across flat rocks. Also you'll be driving through Oak Creek Canyon, which is stunning.
You won't be too far from the south rim of the Grand Canyon. About an hour by car, or you can take a 'bus' up. There is a long trail along the rim and many access points. You can also hike down in, but plan accordingly re: time, attire, sunblock, hydration, and nutrition.
Downtown is pretty awesome, they have a biking brew tour, which I saw but did not do. Rent some bikes while you are there, it is a very bike friendly area. Lots of local breweries and coffee shops.
The observatory is pretty small and boring, but for the right age group you may like it.
Depending on the time of year, it may be both hotter and colder than you expect! Tons of hiking areas. Right downtown near the train depot is an outdoors store, they likely have lots of information.
You will have a great time! Where are you staying?
Definitely go up to Utah, many amazing national parks!

Mother Fucking Grand Canyon. South rim. North rim is closed in the winter. Hiking on the south rim is EXCELLENT, but don't be fooled - it's not for the faint of heart. Here's a photo (currently editing, it's not perfect):

That's about 5000 feet you see in elevation; you need some preparation to do it. (There's no shame in just going down for a half hour and coming up for an hour, by the way, you don't have to do the whole thing - in fact, the whole thing is something like 23 miles with 8000 feet of elevation change.)

Also, depending on how far you're willing to drive:

- Meteor crater (meh)
- Petrified Forest National Park
- Monument Valley
- Bryce
- Zion
- Antelope
- A bunch of national monuments
- A bunch of state parks
- Some national forests

Seriously, it's an extremely excellent place.

And if you want a cliche but incredibly good postcard... not bought from a shop, or googled, but permanently burned into your retina and your memories:

You didn't mention what time of year you're going.  The activities could be drastically different if you mean you're going for Christmas break versus going in summer.

Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin West is in Arizona, though closer to Phoenix.  Absolutely awesome architecture, great tours.  (If you google "Taliesin West" you'll find a website with full info.)

Have a fun trip!

I would second (or third?) the suggestion to go down to Sedona...a beautiful city that my wife and I are planning to retire in.

Here's what I remember from my childhood Flagstaff vacation when I was 7:

- Grand Canyon hike and wildlife encounters (scorpion, condors soaring at the rim, elk)
- IMAX movie at Grand Canyon welcome center (felt like flying!)
- San Francisco peaks hike, the volcano crater (seemed like a moonscape), gondola ride
- Seeing the stars at Lowell observatory (freezing cold at night)
- Climbing around ancient cliff dwellings
- Sedona red rocks hike, the rock chapel, and Sliding rock park

Definitely one of my most memorable childhood vacations.  We also visited the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest on the drive home, which I vaguely remember.

You've inspired me to visit again :)

Enjoy your trip!

To me Sedona is a tourist trap, but I've never spent a whole day. Maybe you can give some details on the good parts that I must have missed.

Thank you all for the info!  We are going in August and we are staying in a rental home w a large family group.   Since Utah is a long drive I am not sure id we should add on days and trek up there or just hang closer to flagstaff.

Did the trip a couple of years ago in August with two teenagers. Outside of Las Vegas, Hoover Dam is worth a stop (and free!!!) and no side trip is required, it is right on the way. The Grand Canyon Railway has a train that will take you to the park from Wlliams, AZ. We did a tour that included a narrated bus tour and lodging. Kids may get a kick out of the train - they put on a Western show with fake train robbery. Montezsuma's Castle is the best preserved cliff dwelling in Arizona and worth a trip. A word of advice - carry plenty of water - we typically started with a case of water bottles in the back and they would be nearly gone by the end of the day.

It depends on what you're in to.  I've been to Sedona a number of times with my ex and probably our favorite was just having an overpriced breakfast at Mesa Grill, which is up by the airport.  Well, overpriced if you look just at what the food costs, but well worth the price if you count it as the price of admission to get astounding views in pretty much all directions.

There's also a free overlook with parking lot near the top of the drive up the airport access road.  The Jeep tours are also awesome, which I have done too.  They are also quite expensive and as an alternative you could just park at one of the hiking trailheads and do some hiking.  Based on the ages of the kids involved none of the long hikes will work, but I'm pretty sure there's a few that are only a quarter mile or so to walk up to something pretty from the trailhead parking lot.  If the 6-yo is high enough energy, that's still a totally reasonable distance.  Walking downtown is kind of fun too and there's a coffee shop with great views, but that probably does nothing for young kids.  There's a natural water slide area too, but I'm not sure it will have any water by August.  I'm pretty sure all the snowmelt is long since dried up by that late in the year.

Bottom line is that downtown Sedona itself is mainly expensive food, drink, and art galleries.  However the rest of the area is beautiful views, at least one major free visitor center, and even the free vantage lookout from the airport mesa if you skip the restaurant.  It's going to be stupid hot in Phoenix in August, so I would not recommend heading into Phx at all, not to mention it's 2-3 hours from Flagstaff and traffic will suck that time of year due to all the Phoenicians going to/from Flagstaff to get out of the heat.

I've lived in south-central AZ my whole life so I actually struggle to think like a tourist, especially since it's been a decade since I had a 6-year old.  I'd probably check out TripAdvisor and other tourism websites to get an idea of everything within 100 miles of Flagstaff.  I love the idea of ducking in to Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah but that's 5+ hours from Flagstaff and only practical if you're doing it either on the way to or from Vegas.  That might make it worth it, but it's still well out of the way versus just taking I-40 from Vegas to Williams/Flagstaff.

OK, now that you have me thinking about it, one of my favorite off the beaten path attractions is on the old Route 66 bypass separate from the I-40.  It's the Grand Canyon Caverns.  It's a genuine underground cavern, and a pretty decent sized one.  You take an elevator straight to the bottom and it's largely level once you're down there, so it should be easy even for young kids.  It hardly adds any time versus taking I-40 the whole way, other than the hour or two for the tour of the caverns.  Around Williams on the I-40 is Bearizona, which is a bear park.  Supposed to be pretty intense; you drive right up close to the bears.  I haven't done it personally as it's a newer place, opened just in the last 5-6 years or so.
