Locking a bike trailer?
« on: April 28, 2021, 03:21:23 PM »
Hi all - We treated ourselves to an awesome new bike trailer this year. Wike makes larger trailers with a higher seated height so I can get my almost 7 year old in there with plenty of headroom to spare. Now that we have a nice trailer and not a hand-me-down I'm more worried about trying to lock it up when I go out. So far I haven't found any reasonable way of doing it. I have an ebike that I lock with a heavy U-lock and a cable. The cable isn't long enough to also pass through the wheel of the trailer. There isn't anything obvious on the hitch arm that I can pass a cable through. What do other people do? Do you just hope no one is that interested in the trailer and only lock the bike?

Carry a longer cable in the trailer.

Wheels on my bike trailer (Burley Bee) are quick release so you don’t want to use those to lock it. I just loop a cable lock through the frame of the trailer itself. I stand it up on its back and loop it through the top.

We have a wike trailer too.  I just pop both wheels off and then lock them with the same cable I use on my bike's front wheel.  I suppose someone could disconnect the wheel-less trailer from the bike, collapse it, and then carry it off . . . but it hasn't been a problem anywhere I've taken it.

Not sure how a wike attaches, but I just replaced the hitch pin with padlock.

If I'm going somewhere I'll need to lock my trailer (Burley Travoy), I carry my noose chain and use that to lock both the e-bike and the trailer, running the chain through the trailer frame.  Generally, I take my trailer with me due to its design and easy use as a shopping cart, but obviously that won't be the case for most trailer designs.

Longer cables are fairly easy to find.  I use them to lock kayaks on top the car and multiple bikes.  I use a U-lock in less safe areas but just a cable and padlock for short stops.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
