How to get out of this cell phone bill
« on: March 18, 2023, 11:51:06 PM »
So I have ATT with two lines and an IPad. The other line is for my now ex. I use the iPad frequently. I only need one line and the iPad. However two years ago my old phone broke and I got into the whole phone installment program going for both and the iPad. I’m on payments 22/30 for the phones and 22/36 for the iPad and currently $272 a month for it all. Is there anyway out of this or am I just stuck until I pay all these installments off? Pretty sure this is an area I could save a lot of money on if I got this cleaned up.

Surely if you change carriers you can pay out the existing devices? Might be time to ask your ex to port their number to their own plan.

Do you need the separate iPad plan if you have internet at home? How often are you using the iPad away from Wi-Fi?

The only way out is through, @P1

You have to pay off the devices to get out of your contract, otherwise the IMEIs on the devices you bought will be flagged in the global mobile carrier databases, which will cause resale and activation issues elsewhere. The question is whether it's cheaper to stay in contract at this point versus paying the contract off early, and whether you have the money to do the buyout.

My old website is long gone, but my old Wireless Plan ROI Calculator tool still works over at Archive.org. You need to find out what the payoff is for each device, find out what plan you need to switch to, and use the calculator to do the math. Might I suggest one of the GSMA plans over at RedPocket.

If your ex is your ex, they need to get off the shared plan and pay off their phone, or be left bag holding the remainder of their part of the account themselves once you're out. Be civil, and nice, and help them escape ship with you on this even if you're going separate ways. Also, you probably don't need mobile data on that iPad. Heck, ask yourself if you need the iPad at all once you're out from under the thumb of this, as it might be a way to recoup some of your losses.

Lastly, consider this an object lesson. It's always way more expensive to buy phones and tablets on installment plans with mobile carriers than it is to buy the outright all at once. If you can't afford to do that, you can't afford the device in the first place, and you need to set your sights on something you can afford, if you need it at all. Entry level Android smartphones from Nokia and Motorola are both reasonably priced and reasonably well built, if you must buy new, and for the lower "disposable" end of Android tablets, Walmart's Onn tablets are surprisingly well built and easy to gut the datamining stuff, even if Android isn't updated very often (so, don't do anything important on these things like banking)... and the only people who need iOS devices are either the people who are locked into the Apple ecosystem, or are one of the few blind people in the world who need to use one of these abominable buttonless devices on a regular basis.

You shouldn't need a cellular plan for the iPad unless you regularly go places without your phone.  Red Pocket (and other MVNOs) will allow you to use your phone as a hotspot and share your data plan.

While you'll probably have to finish the contract.  Try ting mobile when you're finished.  I have a google pixel activated on it.  Ting uses Verizon under the hood.  My bill is rarely over $25 a month good coverage in that I don't ever notice that I'm out of range.  You can use the phone as a hotspot and then wifi to the phone from your ipad.  You don't need a separate cell phone line for the ipad.

I'm on Verizon and have phones on "payments" that work out to $0 because it is really their way to keep you with them like a contract. But if I pay the remaining balance off, I can jump ship at any time. Can you just make a lump sum payment for whatever is left and then either stay with AT&T or move to a cheaper carrier for just your phone? We always just used our tablets on wifi over the years because there was zero reason we needed to connect it to the internet outside our home or work.

Have you looked into Visible? It is a lot cheaper than other plans.

Kick your ex off the plan!

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
