Sounds like a lot of people living to hi on the hog as they say. The one thing I can relate to is even though we have Health insurance with our deductible being what it is I do avoid going to the doctor more than I use to. But i also workout more and still do my annual physicals etc..I do  wonder long term if the average life expectancy will drop because of this or if the percentage isnt large enough despite more and more medications being introduced. The savings part, barring a major event in someones life there just isnt any excuse for that, preparing for situations where one might not have a job for awhile. Granted not everyone can find high paying job then you work two for awhile if you have to.
