Title: What is your net worth percentile for your age?
Post by: meatface on August 31, 2017, 06:17:04 AM
I found this (https://www.shnugi.com/networth-percentile-calculator/) fun little tool, which gives you the percentile of your net worth for your age. I'm guessing it's made an appearance here in the past, but it's new to me so let's play!

If you input your age (for the "starting" and "ending comparison age" just put in the same number for each) and your net worth (I'm married so I used my family net worth), then it will tell you your net worth percentile for your age. This is much more specific percentile info than other net worth calculators that I've seen.

Since the data is actually from 2013 and I'm married, I'm going to use the age of the older spouse (between my spouse and I) to make the result slightly more fair.

As Mustachians, I assume that we'll have a high percentage of votes above the 50th percentile (for our respective ages), but it will be interesting (and we should be proud) to see how well we actually save.

EDIT NOTE: Since the data is from 2013, I also input our average age in 2013 and our net worth in mid-2013 and got the same percentile even though the net worth number was less than half of today. But for the sake of this poll, please default to today's age & net worth unless you note otherwise.

EDIT UPDATE: With well over 500 responses, it appears that the vast majority of Mustachians are in the 80th percentiles or better. Amazing!

So close!  I'm apparently at 89.59 percentile - but I'd need another 35k to hit 90.  The curve gets awfully steep out here :)

I got 96.6% using my household net worth.  (Which is what the calculator says it is designed for, not individual.)
But if I split it in half, for my "share", I got 94.4%.

The median value is pretty depressing; $14k for 31 year-olds.

Low 80s, if I use the current exchange rate to translate my GBPs to dollars.

I don't ever expect to crack 90%.

I was 78.65% and rounded down.  I tried increasing the age to see where I should compare in 5 years, and the curve seems flatter than I would have thought for age increases.  I guess there isn't much saving going on in peoples' late 20s.

64th percentile for me, but it would be 82nd if I hadn't had all those student loans to pay back.. Catching up though!

I was at 77% so rounded up to 80%.  Pretty good considering late start + middling income.

Makes me feel better about just quitting my 100k job for a 25k job that will make my family a lot happier.

What's crazy is there is an actual negative percentile for my age of 48. It says 10% at my age are in the negative !!! Yikes !!

95.8% after converting CAD to USD.

I'm suspect on the upper ranges though as whether I use CAD or convert to USD it gives me the exact same percent, and I highly doubt that a 30% swing in NW would still come out to exactly 95.8%.

I'm the 1%, apparently. Whether I put in my liquid NW or NW including home equity, I get 99.75%.

At 33. At 34, I drop to 96.44%.

Median NW for my age is $22k. Explains why everyone's jaws dropped when I said I was taking a few months off work before looking for a new job.

Holy cow. 91.97% at (late 20s). That's for household. At half that (individual), then I'm 82%.

Having a $0 net worth puts you in the 30th percentile for my age. Jesus. OTOH, I was negative until like 2 years ago, so I can't say I'm too surprised.

Fascinating tool, thanks for sharing! I hadn't seen that before.

I ended up at 97% at 33.  I don't really know if that is accurate since I included the Zillow "value" of my house and that may be completely wrong.

I have a fairly high percentile but I think this is more an indicator of how bad our society financially than how good I am doing (I'm certainly not doing that great IMO).

I averaged our ages since we're 11 years apart, but OMG it is 93.88% if I include our home equity. If I look at just liquid NW it is still 85.62%. That makes me weep for the rest of our society.
Title: Re: What is your net worth percentile for your age?

Wow. Just wow. I keep thinking we're doing terribly, because we still have student loans (going to be completely paid off next month) and most of our investments are in our 401ks. Also, I don't think of my house as an "investment", it's our residence, so I think of the mortgage as a liability without ever thinking of the value of the property as being a positive to our net worth. I was more shocked to calculate our net worth than I was to see what percentile we are. (High 80s.)

I did the age range of 30-35. We should be up in the 90th percentile by the time I, as the older spouse, actually hits 35 early next year.

Also makes me worry that tax law will change at some point to take more accumulated wealth.  As pointed out on other streams, Obamacare subsidies, assuming system isn't completely overhauled, will def be based on assets as well as income at some point.  i.e. someone will realize that a family with 1M in assets but 35k in income doesn't need subsidizing.

One other comment on this tool.  The number of respondents for a single age is only 100-150.  Not nearly enough to measure upper or lower percentiles accurately.  I'd recommend using a small age band around your own age.  And, as for being 2013 data, the upper percentiles should be skewed even higher (given more likely to have more $$ invested during the run-up) if entering current NW.

I thought it would also be neat to compare against "traditional retirement age people", so I put in start age 63, end age 70.

It went down from 96 to 89%-tile.......but, still a nice feeling.

In the comments below the tool the author of the tool notes that you can convert 2017 dollars to 2013 dollars by dividing by 1.06. Doing it this way I got 92.05% for my wife and I together and 81.54% for just me when I cut our NW in half.

67.6% but I decided to round down to 60%. Going from 60% to 70% is more than doubling so I'm still probably $10k short of the 70% mark. However, I've managed to save up about $10k in our emergency fund in the six months since we became debt free. However, adding one more year (birthday coming up soon) at the same net worth drops us down to about 62%.

In the comments below the tool the author of the tool notes that you can convert 2017 dollars to 2013 dollars by dividing by 1.06. Doing it this way I got 92.05% for due to my wife and I together and 81.54% for just me when I cut our NW in half.

That implicitly makes the assumptions that the pool of NW values rose by 6% over that time.  For upper NW people, it grew a lot more due to greater likelihood of being in the (bull) market.

The market over the years 2013 to 2017 would have increased the upper NW households more so than the lower NW households.  So, to get to 2013 percentiles, you current NW should be shrunk more than by a factor of 1.06.  OR, if you have the info, you could enter your 2013 NW.

So, you can easily switch from 2013 to 2017 dollars, but the percentiles will not change in a similar way......if that makes sense.

Entering current/1.06 should overstate your 2013 percentile.

I came out at 79.67%, so close to 80%!

Since my birthday is coming up in a couple months, I decided to bump my age up a year, without changing net worth.

This put me at 81.36%, which seems...counterintuitive? Hmm, maybe I'm hitting "mid-life crisis" age when your average person starts blowing some cash.

84th percentile for me. If you used my wife's age (29) she would be in the 91st.

Four years ago I was in the 33rd percentile, (mostly due to an underwater mortgage) so at least I'm headed in the right direction.
Title: Re: What is your net worth percentile for your age?
Post by: dude on August 31, 2017, 01:09:33 PM
90th if I use just the personal straight-up net worth we've built from scratch
92nd if I include the house my wife's parents gifted her a decade ago (in which they still live)
97th if I include the value of my pension (I calculate it as the portfolio worth that at 4% withdrawal would equal my expected pension payment).

Rare company, but it still seems bizarre to me.  I don't drive a Mercedes, own a McMansion, have a country club membership, etc., etc.  I'm just an average joe who perhaps travels a little more than normal.

hah, this is a fun one. Mying is imo %73 at 27age (YUCK, only found mmm 6 months ago in my defense though). However in real terms its like the 1th precentile since we have a rental + mortgage.  The funny thing is I know now that post mmm this will move stupidly fast and by the time I'm 30, id expect to be in the 90th.

Median networth is the best number there I think. 9k for my age is the exact middle person :|. Thats depressing.

If other people have gotten wealthier since 2013, you probably have, too.

95.7% single person.  I found one a while back that also broke out by state, but was more grouped by age, so 30-35, and by percentile steps, so it had like bottom 1%, 5%, 20%, etc.  I was right at 99% there.

What's crazy is there is an actual negative percentile for my age of 48. It says 10% at my age are in the negative !!! Yikes !!

Then I put in my actual net worth and got 96%.

Once you get above zero net worth that compound growth turns into a tail wind!

We all have to start our journey somewhere!  Around my early - mid 20's I had close to zero or negative net worth due to student loans.  Now I'm in the 90% - 95% group.  Enjoy the journey!

I'm single, didn't use pension (not sure what that would be for NW anyway).  I came out at 95.52%.  If I pretend I'm part of a couple, and leave everything (but retirement) the same, add that this imaginary person has the same retirement savings I do, it only goes up to 97.86%.  If I double my NW (not sure that would be correct, because same house, but whatever, it's over 7 figures), it stays at 97.86%(?!)

Apparently there is some rich-as-hell 38-year-old mofo out there.

95.82%. Not sure its that accurate though, because when I add my partner's net worth (which is a six figure jump), the result I still get is 95.82%

EDIT: Full disclosure, I'm  Australian, so I'm converting my AUD net worth to USD... being 95.82% on a US dataset (which i presume this is), is not as good as being 95.82% here I'd guess, as its a super expensive country to live in.

Out of curiosity I wanted to see what the top 1%ers have in my age band.

More than $6million!!!

Tripple what it takes to be in the top 4%.

I consider myself to be well off, and indeed I am better off than 24/25 people. But the 1 in 25 that is better off than me is way, way better off. There are a lot of very rich peeps out there!

(And even more poor people too, of course).

I like that expression, stealth wealth. We are not as wealthy as most people in this thread (68% at age 27) but we're doing pretty well. We are a good example of stealth wealth too. Most people actually think we're dirt poor because I work parttime, my s/o is a musician and we live in a small house. Looking at our home and lifestyle, no one would believe our wealth is quite a bit above average for our age.

I did a little test.

20 year old with $1000 saved up.
25 year old with $5000 saved up.
30 year old with $10000 saved up.
35 year old with $15000 saved up.
40 year old with $20000 saved up.

Yep, just staying out of credit card debt, not being upside down on a car loan, and saving $1000 a year.

That's a really, really low bar.

Run the test for yourselves.

And let the mods know if you think, like I do, that this belongs in the Anti-Mustachean Wall of Shame and Comedy folder...

I see a lot of friends being worse off financially in their early/mid 30's than they were aged 30 or even 26.

At a certain age, a lot of people start to feel like they're now grownups and deserve a big house and two big cars and the kids they have by then deserve to have several rooms filled with brand new expensive 'educational' toys. I know plenty of people getting cash from their retired parents (as a form of estate planning) and instead of paying off debts or investing, they spend that extra money on living the high life.

96% at age 53 for the family. We don't own a house but will have to rent or buy eventually (living in provided housing currently). And we still have college to pay for.... It will be interesting to see if that percentage goes up or down in the next 5-10 years, as our circumstances change.

Yeah! I've always been frugal but was in school accruing additional debt until I was 25 -- yikes! I have increased my net worth by 80% in the last 12 months, though (-32k to -6k) and am full steam ahead to hit 0NW by 12/31/17. Onward and upward!

That's awesome that your NW has increased so exponentially! It gives me hope. :-)

Sounds like we were in the same boat! I went *back* to school at... 24 I think? Graduated 26... yeah pretty sure that's right. Anyway, by the time it was said and done I had a good $55k ish in student loan debt, for a net worth of about $-25k. It gets fuzzy around when husband and I got married because we combined finances, but we were pretty much net $0 NW when we got married, and we've been headed up ever since!

It's insane how crossing the $0 threshold makes the tides change. Leading up to $0, you grind and cut and watch every damn detail and it feels like you're sprinting just to stay in one place. But then, things start tipping... and accelerating... honestly, I've been amazed how quickly the changes have happened, when day to day it felt like such a struggle for so long.

AKA, you're in the toughest part now, but also the part with the clearest goal and the most will power. You've got this!

Just shy of the 98th for our household at age 30. I agree the stats are a bit depressing and worrying from a societal perspective. Made me feel really grateful for a lot of things – our educations, income, saving habits, the fact that we just bit the bullet and eliminated those student loans rather than letting them ride, etc.

But then I got to thinking that I am retired for 35 months as of today, I have good health, between pensions and social security I have money left over ($58.41 this month, I am debt free and I can afford just about anything I want or need. I didn't quite understand the range at first, so I got 53% and was sad. Then I realized what was going on and entered the age spread between me and my husband using our joint net worth and came up with ~85%. Husband has only had a "career" job since he was 31, so I feel pretty good about this.

Here are some sample numbers from the tool, showing age, savings amount, and percentile ranking:

20 $ 1000  35.23%
25 $ 5000  45.89%
30 $10000  39.68%
35 $15000  28.64%
40 $20000  38.95%

Someone who didn't go to college or paid their way thru, didn't get credit card debt, isn't upside down on their car or house loans, and just stuffed $1000 into the mattress each year would get these results.

When I said earlier that it's a really low bar, I meant it.

94th for age 35.

We live in a super HCOL area and are kinda toward the bottom of the totem pole in terms of how fancy the cars and houses are around us, so I thought we weren't doing so hot. We live in a townhome and drive an older non-luxury vehicle for reference. This puts things in serious perspective and tells me to just "keep on keepin' on" saving every little bit we can!

Whether I put in my liquid NW or NW including home equity, I get 99.75%.

This was interesting to me as it shows just how non-linear the correlation gets toward the upper end.  I have a significant portion of my NW in equity:

30 years old
net worth including equity: $200 k - 92nd percentile
net worth excluding equity: $75 k - 78th percentile

I am surprised that such a high swing ($125 k) only accounts for a 14% difference.

I'd love to see one of these for single people (rather than household, and not part of a couple).  Considering I got pregnant in high school and am still over 90% on this one, I know I'm doing pretty well, but am still curious about comparing to others in a more similar situation.  I know a household is a household, and I run mine, but there is no other person to put $18k away into a tax beneficial retirement fund, no splitting a mortgage between two adults, no second person income, etc.  All could help NW grow so much faster.  Or tank it, with the wrong partner.

Aye, there's the rub.

It's amazing how much money I had once the ex left, even though I was still "poor"!  No more hundreds of dollars a month being shelled out for alcohol and cigarettes.  No more "the cc bill should be $200 this month" then scrambling to gather cash because somehow the bill was really $900 (and even then, I paid off in full each month).  I've been a saver since I was a kid with a paper route, and I was watching all the money I had saved go down the drain, while he was unemployed.

I know much better now, in case there is ever a "next time".

Although the actual amount is pretty low, I was surprised to see a score of 68%.

I guess this means most people really suck at networth. And I suck just a little bit less.

This is odd. If I save nothing for the next 4 years, my percentile will go up.

Real Age
26 to 26 :: Net worth $116k :: 82.8 percentile

Future checking
30 to 30 :: Net worth $116k :: 85.4 percentile

Apparently I'm in a special age group of savers.

I imagine home ownership skews these age brackets a bit. You might also be in the "finally settling down" age range where net worth takes a mortgage-shaped hit.

I was wondering about that. I'm not exactly sure if the data includes home equity or not. It just seems odd that in a 4 year age span the median net worth only changed by $4,650.

26: $15,300
30: $19,950

To add to the weirdness, from 62 to 65 is huge jumps and dips in median net worth, which might suggest this data isn't meant to support the tiny range (one age exactly) that we are trying to use it for in this thread. I think most of these that I've seen before run off of age ranges like 25-29 and so on.

62: $179,000
63: $300,000
64: $158,800
65: $309,510

For the 26 vs 30, with data from 2013, the housing bubble and subsequent burst may play in there quite a bit as well.  I would imagine fewer 26-year-olds (2013 age) were buying houses five years earlier than the 30-year-olds.  So, a lot of those in their 30s may have been underwater, while those in their 20s were able to take advantage of the falling house market.

I wouldn't worry about it because the number of people with $1m in assets that make 35k per year is somewhere between zero and none.

$1m x Market CAGR (10%) = $100,000 of income per year+ earned income of $35,000 = Total income of $135,000. Someone making $135,000 will play plenty of taxes.

I may not fully understand you "$1m x Market CAGR (10%) = $100,000 of income per year" because most people don't sell to realize those gains, but  I may be in that "between zero and none" with a caveat, I'll be collecting SS (~$20k) and generating an income of about $35k.
At least until I get hit with RMD's.
It seems you may try to minimize current income on a $1M NW and try for growth if your income is $100,000.
You don't the income will have to pay taxes on the passive income.

I averaged our ages since we're 11 years apart, but OMG it is 93.88% if I include our home equity. If I look at just liquid NW it is still 85.62%. That makes me weep for the rest of our society.

Isn't a family with around 1M in assets and reporting about $35k/year in taxable income how we view the typical successful MMM follower at FIRE? While not many, I don't think the number is between zero and none.

I got 99.4% using a Household Net Worth of $550,000 and an age of 30. I guess I cheated a bit because I'm still a few months out from getting married. What constitutes a "household" anyway.

In either case thanks for sharing - I always thought it was weird that this data wasn't more widely available considering that age is probably the biggest net worth variable. I'm not sure how reliable this information is but it's interesting none the less.

I'm at the 99.6th percentile for net worth, 99.09th percentile for income, and 0.34th percentile for monthly spending. Gave it a spread of my age to three years older than me. For spending, I gave it the same three year spread, plus family size of one and income of $1 to $1MM.

I think these numbers must be pretty off, given that the data is four years old. 2017 dollars are worth significantly less than 2013 dollars. On the other hand, these statistics are for households--but I'm just one person so that makes me feel better.

We should add poll options for the 95th and 99th percentiles. I think just ending at the 90th is kind of vague.

"Median net worth 23,140.
Mean net worth 286,262."

Those are genuinely frightening numbers. Almost 90% of 35-year-olds are below the mean for net worth. That's social-upheaval bad.

Spread it to the 18-45 category and it barely gets any better. Median net worth 24,300, mean net worth 188,004. That's close to eight times the median, while the mean salary is only 1.5 times median.

With the update, I slipped from 95.52% to 93.34% NW.  My vote stays the same though.

Looking at the tabs on the left...

My retirement savings is at 97.7%.

My income is only 65.19% (without OT).  It goes to 77.88% when I include "typical" amount of OT.

I'm single, but if I had a two income household, where spouse made similar (non-OT) money, "we'd" be in the top 90% income as a household.  Retirement savings (if we had the same) would be at 100%.

I really do wonder how numbers would bread down by individual, instead of household.

With the new numbers
77.95% net worth, 83.64% on income

Good to note that they said median net worth rose 16%, so my drop of 8% means I was raising my net worth faster than the average joe.  Median income rose 10% so that drop is in line, but not as pleasing as the net worth notes.

Just a statistical note:  This tool gives you actual percentiles based on the sample, which is restricted to the age range you put in.

So if I put 39 to 39 (my age), the sample consists of only 88 households.  This means that there are significant discrete jumps in the net worth distribution as you go from one individual to the next.  Especially so at the top.

So I would suggest inserting a range of +/- 5 years instead (i.e. 34 to 44 for me), which results in 1100 households, which will give you a much smoother distribution.

I'm at 97.5% after converting from EUR to USD, but not ready for FI (I'm less optimistic about future returns on investment so don't want to assume a withdrawal rate of more than 2% (in real terms rather than nominal).

Using my age (35) and my wife's age (37) as the age range comparison we are at 97.13% when including the equity in our home. Without including the equity in our home we are at 96.2%.

So happy to see in this poll over 60% of us are above the 90th percentile.

Update: We are now at 97.32% when including equity in our home. 96.41% without including equity in our home.

I'm surprised if I put in my age as both upper/lower bound by how many people are actually higher in net worth.

Thinking to my high school, if I applied that representative sample it seems.... unlikely that there would be so many in an absolute sense that have higher net worth. Remember 95% means that 1 out of every 20 people has a higher net worth than you, so if you graduated with a class of 500 and are the 95% percentile for your age, on average there are 25 people from your high school class that have a higher net worth.

You are assuming that the graduates from any given high school will have a similar distribution of net worths. In practice I would assume that some high schools turn out a higher percentage of very successful graduates.

That said I can think of at least five of my high school classmates off the top of my head that could very well have a higher networth than us (dentist, entrepreneur, NFL, science PhD, accountancy PhD). So I would guess that there are at least a few people in my graduating class who are in the 5%.

The occupations you list may include high-earning, but net worth is about the systems you install in your life to keep and accumulate those earnings.

I'd hope an accounting Ph.D. (I myself have an Economics Ph.D.) had high net worth, but it's not a certainty without knowing more about this particular individual.

Agreed. Anyone of them could have a higher net worth, but most likely do not. I haven't kept in touch with any of the classmates I mentioned other than seeing what they post on Facebook, so any estimates of their finances would be wild guesses. Though I would guess that the accountancy PhD is the least likely of the bunch to have a high net worth (bought or leased a new BMW convertible before finishing degrees). Long term I would expect the dentist to be the most successful (by net worth metrics, but not FIRE metrics).

I also thought of couple more high school friends that are likely to already have a high net worth. They have both been involved in real estate. But I think they were both burned by the housing market crash too. So hard to say where they are at now. One of them has had a ridiculously good work situation with high income and most basic living expenses were included. So the potential for a high savings rate is there.

In my final year of high school there was about 120 students. There was 220 who started high school , but half left in year 10 back in those days to pursue trades etc.

I grew up in a fairly average socio economic area, maybe slightly to the lower end of the spectrum.

But for this exercise, Assuming  my school was the perfect representation of 17-18 year olds in Australia that year, I would be curious to guess who found their way into the top 5% of NW at 45 years old.

I can think of at least 5 definites. Myself in finance, an actuary, an IT system architect, an extremely frugal high level public servant  (science quals) and an entrepreneur (fast food).

Given I know of 5 for certain, and that I don’t keep tabs on my old school mates,, I expect there are at least 6 more to make my year statistically normal.

Hmmmm, I wonder who else has made sound financial decisioms over the past 25 years.

I know plenty who haven’t.

Age 55. 93%, not counting home equity.

Why wouldn't you count that.  Yes, of course, many here argue that it does not add value from a FIRE perspective.... but certainly it is a factor for your net worth by definition.

V8rx7,

It is very hard to turn home equity into income. I do not want to be a landlord. Also, my goal is to have a paid off house and lower bills, enabling FIRE. Maybe I will tap it at the end, if everything else goes wrong. I don't count cars or possessions for the same reason. Too hard to turn into income.

If you want an actual apples to apples comparison using that tool then you should calculate your net worth the same way. And it doesn't matter than home equity is hard to turn into income, it is still part of your net worth.

47yo....98.28%.  I'm surprised that I'm that high given the fact that my earnings barely put me into the top 10%.  But I save and invest like a mothafucka so I guess that's the difference.

I agree. It's all contained in the accounting equation: Assets = Liabilities - Equity.

For Assets, you include everything you own. For Liabilities, you include everything you owe. The difference is your Equity, aka Net Worth.

When I first voted on this poll as it was created, I put 30%. I think it was lower and I rounded up.

Now it's 52%.

Seems impressive but apparently for my age it's only a difference of a few thousand dollars.

I think you'll find it won't take very much money to move from 20th percentile to 80th percentile. Just a natural part of the normal distribution.

Yes, I know there's an active debate elsewhere in this forum about whether home equity should be part of net worth.

But stop and consider how many normal households there are for whom that home equity is MOST of their net worth. That understanding is really important for getting a handle on public policy.

True Mustachians would have the percentile of net worth EXCEED the percentile of labor market income, amiright?
Using 25-35 years I'm at 89% net worth, 59% income, and 6% spending.  How about a totally pointless metric: [89% (net worth)-59% (income)]/12 (years into "adulthood" or beyond 18) = 2.5 whiskers

I also thought it might be interesting to see how the graphs line up against each other, for what it's worth:

Using my age (35) and my wife's age (37) as the age range comparison we are at 97.13% when including the equity in our home. Without including the equity in our home we are at 96.2%.

So happy to see in this poll over 60% of us are above the 90th percentile.

Update: We are now at 97.32% when including equity in our home. 96.41% without including equity in our home.
Update: Now that I am 36 and my wife is 38. I ran the numbers using the age range of 36-38 and it is now 96.87% when including equity in our home, 96.32% without including equity in our home.

TheHusbandHalf is going to take his pension as a lump sum and Fidelity gives an amount he'd get if he would take it at Jan 4, 2019 (which he says is when he's retiring) I suppose it would be less, but not much, if I used today's date, but I don't feel like changing all the numbers. His pension is guaranteed to grow 5%/yr and he says it's not invested so doesn't depend on the markets.

I tried [my age, my age+1] as the lower/upper limits and got 96.56%.  But I'm not sure how meaningful this is because there were only ~200 households included in the sample.

Then I tried [my age-3, my age+12] and got 94.7% for ~1,700 households.  Good enough for me, I guess.

At 29, I am at 91%. Surprised, to say the least.

I make a decent income for where I live, but nothing exceptional. My wife makes a very modest income. We are extremely frugal and I make the most out of every penny earned, but would never figure 90+ percentile. Just goes to show that it's what you do with your money and not all about how much you make.

Interesting - a smidge under 80%, which I am quite happy about. Was nearly flat broke about 8 years ago after divorce. I'm single so I think at a bit of a disadvantage for people who can use family income. If I was married to my sweetie we'd be up quite a bit. Sad to see such a huge distance between mean and median.

99% but disappointed we are unlikely to reach 100%.  We would have to increase net worth by 30x which seems unlikely given I don't play Lotto or trade crypto. And of course if I don't get there soon, another year will pass and the goal post will move away. Terrible.

My NW has grown, but my percentile has dropped to 92.08%.  However, if there were two of me (to compete with the couples fairly), it's now up to 99.2%.

Our household is at 89.59%; although my networth is an approximation so I bet it's probably something like 88 - 92. Rounded up to 90th for the sake of the poll.

Composition of assets in "households like me" is somewhat different (we have more equity, no debt, and fewer financial assets).

We also have about 55% of the total income of "similar households".

Education level / demographics / labor force / marital status are all in the most frequent ranges for similar households (I'm W2 which was 81%, although wife is stay at home "not working" which was only 10% of the distribution).

I think it would have been interesting to see comparison on number of children (we have 3) and a geographic breakdown too (NY State, not city).

Some interesting stats from that calculator:

90% percentile cutoff at age 65 is $2,433,000 (Wow! So 10% of 65-year olds have more than $2.4MM? Wow.)
90% percentile cutoff at age 66 is $1,453,300 (Again wow! Lot of seniors living it up during their first year of retirement! To the tune of $1MM vacations and exotic cars)
90% percentile cutoff at age 67 is $1,780,301 (Phew, those seniors have finally stopped partying and started saving again!)
90% percentile cutoff at age 68 is $1,566,620 (Okay)
90% percentile cutoff at age 69 is $2,440,000 (Wow! Let me in on whatever those 68-year olds invested in last year!)
90% percentile cutoff at age 70 is $1,402,400 (Easy come, easy go)

You'd expect the distribution curve to be much smoother. Such wild jumps seem to indicate a very small sample size.
