What is Your MMM Soundtrack?
« on: February 07, 2014, 08:23:57 PM »
Just wondering which songs people love that echo the sentiments of MMM?

My Top Four

1. Society - Eddie Vedder
2. Mountain O Things - Tracey Chapman
3. Victims of Comfort - Keb Mo
4. Follow the Sun - Xavier Rudd

And one honourable mention...

5. Too Much Stuff - Eric Bibb

I don't mind. by Peter Bingen.

The lyrics that make it (in addition to many of the lyrics): Keep your brain in your head and your head attached to your body.
Body active and alive. And I promise you this much.

I promise you this one sweet victory, over our enemies.
Over those desk bound people with their hearts in a box
And their eyes hypnotized by calculators.
I promise you this one sweet victory...
YOU'LL OUTLIVE THE BASTARDS!

Step by Step Allan Parsons Project also Games People Play and Days Are Numbers
Runnin' Down A Dream -Tom Petty  (I  always change the line to "I was riding  ;-) )
My Thanksgiving - Don Henley + "Working it"  off the same album,  but it's a  little depressing
Guilty pleasure: "I'm Free" by John Secada  - little bit of 90's cheese , little bit of  self  help, but it's catchy pop cheese
Owl City : Cave In
Edited to add : I can't BELIEVE I forgot "Thrift Shop" I wish that song wasn't so dirty, or I'd play it for my Thrift -shop loving parents!

Hmm, I'm the oddball.  I'm going to go with the family sitting around the piano together playing and singing, and/or drum circles.

OOO, Allen, very nice.  I took the wording to mean a song that embodied MMM for you.  But you hit perhaps the most mustachian form of song.  I like it!

I've been listening to that album off and on for like a year now and I can't decide if he's deep or just pretentious. Half the lyrics don't even mean anything!

The Official Unofficial MMM Soundtrack?

Thanks for all the great input so far.
I have compiled all of the songs suggested that are available on Spotify into a

Mr Money Mustache Readers Playlist

which can be found at the link below.

I use the free version of Spotify, it works well enough and just has the occasional reasonably non-abrasive ad. I'll add to the list as new recommendations come in. If we can get a recording of one of those Drum Circles onto spotify, let's slot it into the mix.

I totally dig Marillion, and it seems that half of their lyrics are about Mustachianism.

This one is about loving what you already have:
Marillion - Lucky Man
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bfx-WVtqx-w

This one is about not letting your past mistakes ruin your life (like debt)
Marillion - Don't Hurt Yourself
www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIGLRTKq8I4

and this one is about the uselessness of fancy stuff
Marillion - Most Toys

"Sit Pretty" by The Honor System

"You don't need a fucking cubicle to be free
I'll sit all alone and play guitar for hours
In this crumbling room I call home now
Who's to say that dreams are not allowed
Can you understand me now?
I'm screaming it loud"

I think at least 400 million of this video's plays come from the MMM forums.

The most quintessential MMM song I've ever heard, from the movie (fight club) that started me down this path, questioning how advertising/mainstream society tells us how to live.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSpqObhK4Rw

The lyrics could come straight from a MMM poem (even has the MMM-necessary swearing!):

You are not your bank account
You are not the clothes you wear
You are not the contents of your wallet
You are not your grande latte...

You are not the car you drive
You are not your fucking khaki's

You have to give up, you have to give up
You have to realize that someday you will die
Until you know that, you are useless

I say let me never be complete
I say may I never be content
I say deliver me from Swedish furniture
I say deliver me from clever art
I say deliver me from clear skin and perfect teeth
I say you have to give up
I say evolve, and let the chips fall where they may

This is your life
And it's ending one-minute at a time

No mention of the Stones - "Satisfaction"  Or the Police "Spirts in the Material World".

Of course just about anything with words from Pink Floyds "Dark Side of the Moon" applies in one way or another.

Billy Joel "Still Rock and Roll to Me" and "Movin'Out"

Bob Dylans "Maggie's Farm"

BTO's "Taking Care of Business"

And Dare I say it but "Free Bird" could work too, just gotta not think of it as break up song.

A little more off beat
Devo -  "Wonderful World"
Frank Zappa "I'm the Slime"
The Residents - "Less Not More" and "Possesions" <<<mind you they are an aquired taste>>>

Or how's about good old Johnny Paychecks "Take This Job and Shove It"......

I can't believe no one mentioned John Lennon's "Round and Round."  That to me explains the philosophy of the FIRE decision perfectly.

Conradpdx,
Since you mentioned Devo, I had to share this - "No Place Like Home " from " Something for Everyone"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jg-X9O4lkxs

"What we do " is a great send-up of the anti-mustachian life.
