What is your income range?
« on: April 23, 2014, 07:52:18 PM »
I'm new here so I'm a little curious how much you bring home (after taxes) and what percentage of it you invest.

I'm retired now so not investing any longer. Also make well (WELL) under $40K/year but am mortgage and debt free, single, no kids and don't need much. Retired at 42, lived on savings knowing I had a government pension that I could start collecting at age 50.

We're a couple. We took home just over $63,000 in 2013, including all bonuses, overtime, scalping income, and tax refunds. We spent just over $26,000. So we saved about 60% of net income.

It's looking better so far this year - in the first three months of the year we took in just over $22,000 (large tax refunds), and spent about $5800, so for the time being we're sitting at about 75% savings rate.

My wife and I both gross about 100k - then adding in bonuses and our dividend income that's another 50k. And we spend less than 2k every month. Yeah, we save and invest a ton, around 10k monthly - though that will be halved when I ER later this year. Saving this much can be a bit intoxicating - but I still think that not working will be even more fun. Soon, soon....

From my predictions I should net between $120k - $160k for this year.
Spending around $40k for a savings rate between 65%-75%

My partner brings home around $50k but we keep our finances entirely separate.

My husband just got a pay increase so £48k which is about $80k. He earns around $90k with overtime.

We are saving about 40% now I think, with overtime it will be about 50%.

I'm impressed by some of the high savings rates on this forum!:)

I am in ER but my wife by choice works at the Company we own 25hrs a week so we still make 250k plus per year and save over 40% of that. Be more but we have a very active family of 6 of which 2 are teenagers.  We continue to max out our 401ks and save well on top of that.

Are you wanting gross income in the poll?  Or net?  I suppose gross would make more sense?

Anyway, between full time job, rental income, and other income, I think my gross is about $90,000.  Wow, that's a lot more than my first real time job 30 years ago that paid $13,000.  A bit more breathing room!

Aside from mortgage payments and TIAA loan payments, I spent about $16,000 last year.  Plan to max out both 401K and Roth this year for the first time ever.  Yay!

ETA:  I am single.  So, that income and those expenses are mine alone.

Could have sworn there was a poll about this already, but can't seem to find it.

$60K for a family of 5. Our savings rate this year should be close to 50%.

IMO Net would make more sense since different tax rates will apply depending on country, citizenship, and circumstance :)

net is net.

I work 90% full-time, and my wife works 60% full-time. We gross ~$140k/yr and are saving about half of take-home.  If we both worked full-time, we'd maybe be saving more... but, meh :)

A better picture of our current financial progress is revealed by these facts: we net about 13k monthly, while we spend less than 2k.

This is about as sure a recipe for ER/FI as I can think of short of winning the lottery - sadly I've seen a few retirement based polls that suggest many people think a lottery win is their ticket to a nice retirement. Scary.

We have high income and have been living larger than our income.  I'm new here and while we are allocating to our 401K's (16% combined with 100% match on that) we are working to pay down debt and right now monitor/analyze our spending to find and stop the bleeding.

.

It takes a lot of discipline not to "live it up" when you have a lot of disposable cash. We have managed to keep the reigns on our spending because we want ER/FI more than a big house and fancy cars (though I get an irrational desire for a german sports car sometimes).

Anytime we get the desire to "keep up with the Joneses" and buy something we don't need, we calculate how much longer we would have to work to pay for it. That squashes the desire pretty quick.

I'm sure there have been a few, but I think one a year is probably fine as the old polls close and we get new readers (and people get raises or ER)

Thanks for the feedback.  We bring in about $175k.  We only save $4500 a month which compared to you guys is pretty shameful.  I need to pick up my game.

$267K, all my wife.  We pay a lot of tax since we have no mortgage and no kids but still manage to save about $12,000 a month.  It adds up kind of fast.

Do you know how few North Americans manage to save $4500 a month? That's impressive by any measure. The folks on this forum are not at all representative of greater society.

Not going to say how much I make, low six figures and a SAHW is sufficient disclosure.  Not really sure it's that important, we've always had a 50+% saving rate over 10+ years, that's all that matters.  We live off of passive income now, with our lifestyle inflation in check, so our 'saving rate' is over 100% (plus we give yet more thanks to Mr. Bull Market).  But, on a 2008/09 year we might go back to a negative saving rate, unless I can lighten our equity exposure sufficiently (losing 30% with a big portfolio will do that), so I'm only adding to muni bonds and TIPS, and 401k to defer this ridiculous income from tax (oh yeah, and sometimes buying Norwegian Kroner in an old expat account with 3% interest, but that's the Apocalyptic in me)...  pretty cool way to live for the final year or so before FIRE.  If we have a wicked downturn, at least I feel like I know where I stand.  The market falls faster that it rises, that has always been the case (because the market ultimately has some human component, losses being more significant than gains and all), so it usually hits bottom in a year or two once the downturn starts...  I wish us all the best in the future, I think we are destined to live in interesting times, which isn't a Chinese curse if you are prepared  ;)

True! I once had a very small salary but a very large saving rate (almost 100%). Dear old Uncle Sam fed, clothed, sheltered, and even paid me a very modest amount for a large number of years. And he kept me far from anywhere that I could spend any of that money. Of course the never ending work week without weekends off or holidays could be hell :-)! (enlisted military most at sea)

My spouse and I make just over 200k gross. We will spend about 30k this year. Taxes are pretty high in Canada, and we'll pay almost twice what we spend. This leaves us with a savings rate of 55%.

Thanks for everyone contributing their info - its interesting and inspiring to see.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
