What is your Fire Song?
« on: December 03, 2019, 07:16:44 PM »
This idea came from the 2020 Cohort Thread but it deserves it's own topic.

What song best exemplifies your FIRE journey, or best illustrates why you are making the sacrifices in order to become FI and or RE?  What do you listen to for inspiration, motivation or keeps you going when it gets tough. What song do you plan on playing the day you FIRE?

Here's mine to start...

https://youtu.be/KUwjNBjqR-c

Harry Chapin - Cat's in the Craddle, this verse sums it up for me.  He wasted his whole life working only to miss out on his kid's childhood.  I'm not going to do that..

I've long since retired and my son's moved away
I called him up just the other day
I said, I'd like to see you if you don't mind
He said, I'd love to, dad, if I could find the time
You see, my new job's a hassle, and the kids have the flu
But it's sure nice talking to you, dad
It's been sure nice talking to you
And as I hung up the phone, it occurred to me
He'd grown up just like me
My boy was just like me

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
"When you coming home, son?" "I don't know when"
But we'll get together then, dad
We're gonna have a good time then

I'll play! I have a whole FIRE anthems playlist going. Some are cheesy motivational songs like Keith Urbans "Better Life" and Panic at the Disco's "High Hopes"

I like Walk the Moon's "One Foot" for keeping me motivated in these last "middle years" when sometimes it feels like such a long journey still ahead.

And for general perspective, I love Fiona Apple's "Better than Fine":

If you don't have a song
To sing you're okay
You know how to get along
Humming
Hmmm
If you don't have a date
Celebrate
Go out and sit on the lawn
And do nothing
'Cause it's just what you must do
Nobody does it anymore
No I don't believe in the wasting of time,
But I don't believe that I'm wasting mine
If you don't have a point to make
Don't sweat it
You'll make a sharp one being so kind
And I'd sure appreciate it
Everyone else's goal's to get big headed
Why should I follow that beat being that I'm
Better than fine

Sure, I'll crosspost my contribution from the other thread.

My 3-year-old doesn't have a lot of exposure to Disney, but he likes the original Pete's Dragon movie with Helen Reddy. This song from the movie makes an excellent FIRE anthem:

Quote
It's a Brazzle Dazzle day,
So throw off the past and everything in it,
That's the Brazzle Dazzle way,
Enjoying your time, from minute to minute,
Running through the sand without your shoes on,
Making sure that you don't keep your blues on,
Finding a boat we can cruise on

It's a Brazzle Dazzle day,
When you think of love and never of sorrow,
That's the Brazzle Dazzle way,
To do your work now and take off tomorrow,
Flying through the air, you don't need wings on,
Climb right up and feel the thrill it brings on,
Flock with the wind as it sings on.

Ride higher and higher and glide above the clouds,
Free! No one to catch us or slow us,
Even the birds are below us!

It's a Brazzle Dazzle day,
A lifetime of joy in just a few hours,
All our Brazzle Dazzle years have just begun,
We'll follow the sun and replay,
This Brazzle Dazzle day!

I'd suggested Steer by Missy Higgins in a different thread/context, but it's such a perfect FIRE song that it belongs here too:

------------

Feel it falling off like clothing
Taste it rolling on your tongue
See the lights above you glowing
Oh, and breathe them deep into your lungs

It was always simple, not hidden hard
You've been pulling at the strings
Playing puppeteer for kings
And you've had enough

But the search ends here
Where the night is totally clear
And your heart is fierce
So now you finally know
That you control where you go
You can steer

So hold this feeling like a new born
Of freedom surging through your veins
You have opened up a new door
So bring on the wind, fire and rain

And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath, and one day closer to death
Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines

I want to learn the "ooh, it feels good to be free!" dance from the video for "Breakin' Up" by Rilo Kiley and sing/dance around the living room on my first day of freedom! Lately I've also been inspired by "Into the Unknown" (the Panic at the Disco! version from Frozen 2), because that's what making the jump to FIRE feels like...

Light As Anything  has been my latest
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Xzro3TDxso

On the edge of blowin' away
I'll stay
This balance game
Is what I'm happy to play
Must be
This feeling of free

Don't you know I'm tired
Of these paint by numbers?
Talk about my comfort
That's a risk I'm willing to ride
To try to be happy
Sounds like a plan to me
Don't it sound like?

This is the fire that keeps me up all night
And still at church on time
And feeling light as anything
This is the sun that keeps my mornings bright
That keeps my pocket tight
And somehow light as anything
I'd say that life is better on my side
So come and waste some time
We could be light as anything
...

I love this one! One of my favorite "work sucks I wanna be free" songs is Go by Apples in Stereo. It's extremely catchy.
Go
When you go into the place
That you work you have no face
You know you wanna go (go baby)
The moment that you get there (go baby)
And you get the evil eye
From the people you despise
And you know you wanna go (go baby)
The moment that you get there (go baby)
You're such a pretty, pretty, pretty little girl
Let's blow this ugly, ugly, ugly little world
Go
There's a party going down
All your friends are going 'round
You know you wanna go (go baby)
The moment that you get there (go baby)
As the people that you know
Act like monkeys in a row
You know you wanna go (go baby)
The moment that you get there (go baby)
You're such a pretty, pretty, pretty little girl
Let's blow this ugly, ugly, ugly little world
Go
When you go into the shop
Lady watches like a cop
You know you wanna go (go baby)
The moment that you get there (go baby)
She don't like the way you look
So she treats you like a crook
You know you wanna go (go baby)
The moment that you get there (go baby)
You're such a pretty, pretty, pretty little girl
Let's blow this ugly, ugly, ugly little world
Go

For most of my life I've been a daydreamer.

As  a FIREee  I have plenty of time for daydreaming.

“Daydream” by the Lovin' Spoonful always reminds me of what it's like to be FIREd.

"Daydream" Lyrics

What a day for a day dream
What a day for a day dreamin' boy
And I'm lost in a day dream
Dreamin' 'bout my bundle of joy

And even if time ain't really on my side
It's one of those days for taking a walk outside
I'm blowing the day to take a walk in the sun
And fall on my face in somebody's new mowed lawn

I've been havin' a sweet dream
I've been dreamin' since I woke up today
It's starring me in my sweet dream
Cause she's the one that makes me feel this way

And even if time is passin' me by a lot
I couldn't care less about the dues you say I got
Tomorrow I'll pay the dues for dropping my load
A pie in the face for being a sleepy bull toad

And you can be sure that if you're feelin right
A day dream will last a long time into the night
Tomorrow at breakfast you may prick up your ears
Or you may be dreamin' for a thousand years

What a day for a day dream
Custom made for a day dreamin' boy
And now I'm lost in a day dream
Dreamin' about my bundle of joy

I'll submit John Prine's Spanish Pipedream:

She was a level-headed dancer on the road to alcohol
And I was just a soldier on my way to montreal
Well she pressed her chest against me
About the time the juke box broke
Yeah, she gave me a peck on the back of the neck
And these are the words she spoke

Blow up your t.v. throw away your paper
Go to the country, build you a home
Plant a little garden, eat a lot of peaches
Try an find jesus on your own

Well, I sat there at the table and I acted real naive
For I knew that topless lady had something up her sleeve
Well, she danced around the bar room and she did the hoochy-coo
Yeah she sang her song all night long, tellin' me what to do

Blow up your t.v. throw away your paper
Go to the country, build you a home
Plant a little garden, eat a lot of peaches
Try an find jesus on your own

Well, I was young and hungry and about to leave that place
When just as I was leavin', well she looked me in the face
I said "you must know the answer."
"she said, "no but I'll give it a try."
And to this very day we've been livin' our way
And here is the reason why

We blew up our t.v. threw away our paper
Went to the country, built us a home
Had a lot of children, fed 'em on peaches
They all found jesus on their own

Mine isn't a song but a video. I Could Be The One by Avicii.

Basically she's a office worker who dreams of being free. One day she goes apeshit and destroys the office and tells her co-workers to F off.
Then she leaves for a tropical island where she has flings and rides horses etc.
It's very funny (spoiler:  ignore the last few seconds)

"Money, Money, Money" is about a woman who longs for attachment to a rich man.

Putting her wish aside,  I  think  the bolded lyrics are apropos of the thoughts and  aspirations  of most Mu$tachian$ not yet FIREd.

 "Money, Money Money" by ABBA

I work all night, I work all day, to pay the bills I have to pay
 Ain't it sad?
And still, there never seems to be a single penny left for me
 That's too bad

In my dreams, I have a plan
If I got me a wealthy man
I wouldn't have to work at all
I'd fool around and have a ball

 Money, money, money
 Must be funny
 In the rich man's world
 Money, money, money
Always sunny
 In the rich man's world

 A-ha, ah
All the things I could do
If I had a little money

 It's a rich man's world

A man like that is hard to find, but I can't get him off my mind
 Ain't it sad?
And if he happens to be free, I bet he wouldn't fancy me
 That's too bad

So I must leave, I'll have to go
 To Las Vegas or Monaco
And win a fortune in a game
My life will never be the same

 Money, money, money
 Must be funny
 In the rich man's world
 Money, money, money
 Always sunny
 In the rich man's world
 A-ha, ah
All the things I could do
If I had a little money
 It's a rich man's world

 [Outro]
 It's a rich man's world

Alicia Keys - This girl is on Fire!!  Helpsalot when my boss is being an ass!

She's just a girl, and she's on fire
Hotter than a fantasy, longer like a highway
She's living in a world, and it's on fire
Feeling the catastrophe, but she knows she can fly away
Oh, she got both feet on the ground
And she's burning it down
Oh, she got her head in the clouds
And she's not backing down

I've got two songs:

"My Way", Frank Sinatra. To me, being financially dependent on a job means that I need to live my life the way the company wants me to instead of living it my way (I'm guessing that more than a few people on this forum agree...). I want to look back on my life in my old age and be able to say "...I did it my way." Which will be a lot easier if I have the freedom to do it my way, instead of my bosses way. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQzdAsjWGPg

"The Final Countdown" by Europe. Honestly, I don't know the full lyrics to this song. Yes, I'm one of those people who has fallen in love with a song based on the catch-phrase. I'm OK with that. I want to spend the last week of my pre-FIRE career rocking out to this song, regularly screaming "It's the final countdown!" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jK-NcRmVcw

Dirty Heads - Vacation

A-a-aye, I'm on vacation
Every single day 'cause I love my occupation
A-a-aye, I'm on vacation
If you don't like your life, then you should go and change it

Illuminate my future bright
So thankful for everything
Rejuvenate my inner light
As I work hard for all I need
Open arms, embracing life
And all of which you gave me
Hard work, it pays off
I'm happy now, it's paying me
Close my eyes sometimes it feels as if I go away

I love the life I live and enjoy the ride along the way
"I make a living out of living," yeah, that's what I say
I've got one life to live, and I wouldn't live it no other way

I had posted this in the 2020 FIRE group - My FIRE song contribution is Solsbury Hill by Peter Gabriel - which I choose to interpret as having the courage to letting go of the boring and safe status quo to risk reaching for something better

Solsbury Hill

Peter Gabriel, Lou Reed

Climbing up on Solsbury Hill
I could see the city light
Wind was blowing, time stood still
Eagle flew out of the night

He was something to observe
Came in close, I heard a voice
Standing stretching every nerve
Had to listen had no choice

I did not believe the information
I just had to trust imagination
My heart going boom boom boom
"Son," he said, "Grab your things, I've come to take you home."

To keepin' silence I resigned
My friends would think I was a nut
Turning water into wine
Open doors would soon be shut

So I went from day to day
Tho' my life was in a rut
'Till I thought of what I'd say
Which connection I should cut

I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey," he said, "grab your things, I've come to take you home."

When illusion spin her net
I'm never where I want to be
And liberty she pirouette
When I think that I am free

Watched by empty silhouettes
Who close their eyes, but still can see
No one taught them etiquette
I will show another me

Today I don't need a replacement
I'll tell them what the smile on my face meant
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey," I said, "You can keep my things, they've come to take me home."

I'm Free
The Soup Dragons

Don't be afraid of your freedom
Freedom
I'm free to do what I want any old time
I said I'm free to do what I want any old time
I say love me, hold me
Love me, hold me
'Cause I'm free to do what I want any old time
And I'm free to be who I choose any old time
I say love me, hold me
Love me, hold me
'Cause I'm free
I say love me, hold me
Love me, hold me
'Cause I'm free to do what I want
To be what I want any old time
And I'm free to be who I choose
To get my booze any old time
I say love me (love me forever)
Hold me (and love will never die)
Love me, hold me
'Cause I'm free
Do you hear what the man say
These are the words me hear from my grandaddy, come
These are the words me hear from my grandaddy
He would say nothing in this world like when a man know he free
Free from the lock up, me say
Free from the debt
Free like a butterfly
Free like a bee
These are the words me hear from my grandaddy
Said it's nice to be free, nice to be free
Free from the lock up, me say
Free from the debt
Don't be afraid of your freedom
'Cause I'm free to do what I want any old time (I'm a new creation)
'Cause I'm free to do what I want any old time (Don't be afraid of your freedom)

'Cause I'm free to do what I want any old time (I'm free, I'm free, I'm free)
'Cause I'm free to do what I want any old time (I'm free, I'm free, I'm free)

I'm Free lyrics © Abkco Music, Inc

Played on my freedom day and occasionally thereafter (any old time)

Here's another song about freedom that has the same title.

"I'm Free"  by The Who

I'm free
I'm free
And freedom tastes of reality
I'm free
I'm free
An' I'm waiting for you to follow me

If I told you what it takes
To reach the highest high
You'd laugh and say 'nothing's that simple'
But you've been told many times before
Messiahs pointed to the door
And no one had the guts to leave the temple!

I'm free
I'm free
And freedom tastes of reality

I'm free
I'm free
An' I'm waiting for you to follow me

How can we follow?
How can we follow?

Somewhere Far Away--Little Big Town

I'm too tired to get a job
 Gonna thumb out of Abilene
It's time to take a chance on
 Someplace I've never ever seen
'Cause I've got nothing to lose

Too much to see it all
There's miles in front of me
 Street signs are never mine
I'm gonna do just what I please
'Cause I've got nothing to prove

Whispers on the window
 Gone without a trace
By the time you look for me
Well I'll be somewhere far away

Don't know if I'll stop
I've never been to New Orleans
I'm just a rolling rock yeah
Gonna make a break, break it clean
Don't want nothing but the truth

Whispers on the window
 Gone without a trace
By the time you look for me
Well I'll be somewhere far away

Solitary, all alone
To the quick and to the bone
 On the edge and unafraid
 What's behind begins to fade

Whispers on the window
 Gone without a trace
By the time you look for me
Well I'll be somewhere far away

Too tired to get a job
 Thumb out of Abilene

I have one that exemplifies a "why of FI", Shop Vac by Jonathan Coulton. It's what we're looking to escape with FIRE. Lyrics below, and here's a YouTube link to a cool kinetic typography animation of it.

Verse 1:
We took the freeway out of town
We found a place to settle down
We bought a driveway and a swingset and a dog
You got your very own bathroom
I got my very own workshop in the basement
We sit around staring at the wall-to-wall
Take field trips to our favorite mall
Waiting for the day when all the kids grow up and leave us here

Chorus:
So if you need me
I'll be downstairs
With the shop vac
You can call but I probably won't hear you
Because it's loud with the shop vac on
(For heaven's sake it's really loud with the shop vac on)
But you'll be OK
Cause you'll be upstairs
With the TV
You can cry and I probably won't hear you
Because it's loud with the shop vac on

Verse 2:
We hung a flag above the door
Checked out the gourmet grocery store
I bought a mower I can ride around the yard
But we haven't got real friends
And now even the fake ones have stopped calling
Maybe if you forget to hide the keys
I'll take a ride to Applebee's
I'll come home drunk on daiquiris and throw up on the neighbor's lawn

Chorus

Bridge:
I like the Starbucks here that's better than the other one
Cause the other one's not as good
They really need to put a light there cause it's hard to turn
It's hard to make a left turn

Verse 3:
And when it's time to go to bed
I'm still awake inside my head
I'm floating up above the house and looking down
I guess I gotta go back there
I guess there never was any other answer
And as the freeway hums the cars go by
The headlights roll across the sky
Many miles away and I can see them speeding through the dark

Chorus

So many good songs and lyrics that tie in well w/FIRE!

For me, it's a lot about being different from the crowd ("normal people"). I am so lucky that I have found the FIRE movement, MMM, ERE and a lot of other similar online communities.

My contribution: Dan Reed Network/Rainbow child, bc my heart beats to the rhytm of a different drum, which in fact makes me very happy.

Say Hello to the Rainbow child
She don't talk much she just sits there and smiles
She's gotta heavy heart that beats to the rythm of a different song

Say hello to the Rainbow Child
She don't say much it's just her personal style
She's gotta magic mind that that reaches to the border of the riverside

She don't know what she has in her hands
If someone tried to tell her she won't understand

She's like the wind & the rain & the flowers & the pain
She is everything

Open your arms to the Rainbow Child
If you needed her love she would travel the miles
She's gotta heavy heart that beats to the rythm of a different song

Johnny Paycheck's "Take this Job and Shove It" was not exactly my inspiration, more like a theme song that made me smile along the way.

Take this job and shove it....I ain't a-working a-here no more!

Etc.

Another one for “My Way.”

Depending on the day, the Frank Sinatra or Sid Vicious version.

It's more a genre.  Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville, Zach Brown's Free and Toes in the water, ass in the sand.

A few that come to mind...

A Light That Never Comes by Linkin Park and Steve Aoki

Lyrics
Spoiler: show
Nah, you don't know me
Lightning above and a fire below me
You cannot catch me, cannot hold me
You cannot stop, much less control me
When it rains, it pours, when the floodgates open brace your shores
That pressure don't care when it breaks your doors
Say it's all you can take, better take some more

'Cause I know what it's like to test fate
Had my shoulders pressed with that weight
Stood up strong in spite of that hate

Night gets darkest right before dawn
What don't kill you makes you more strong
And I been waiting for it so long

The nights go on
Waiting for a light that never comes
I chase the sun
Waiting for a light that never comes

Oh
Oh
Oh
Waiting for a light that never comes

When I was young, they told me, they said
Make your bed, you lie in that bed
A king can only reign 'til instead
There comes that day it's "off with his head"

The night gets darkest right before dawn
What don't kill you makes you more strong
You'll have my mercy then when you're gone

The nights go on
Waiting for a light that never comes
I chase the sun
Waiting for a light that never comes

Oh
Oh
Oh
Waiting for a light that never comes

And I told them, nah, you don't know me
Lightning above and a fire below me
You cannot catch me, cannot hold me
You cannot stop, much less control me
When it rains, it pours
When the floodgates open, brace your shores
That pressure don't care, it breaks your doors
Say it's all you can take, better take some more

Oh
Oh
Oh
Waiting for a light that never comes

The nights go on
Waiting for a light that never comes
I chase the sun
Waiting for a light that never comes

Oh
Oh
Oh
Waiting for a light that never comes

Eon by Celldweller

Lyrics
Spoiler: show
I'm pushing through face-down
I'm pushing through face - down

I'm pacing inside this empty room
Told to wait til my life's withdrawn
Uneasy, I'm waiting here anxiously
It's a waste and I won't wait another Eon

Endless night
Long for light
My head against this tomb
And pushing through
I'm pushing through
Face-down and pushing through

Trapped and isolated
Time is dislocated
Eternity is what a moment seems
When I can't feel anything

Erasing my final memories
They won't stop til my whole life's gone
Uneasy, I wait for normality
It's a waste and I won't wait another Eon

Endless night
Long for light
My head against this tomb
And pushing through
I'm pushing through
Face-down and pushing through

Trapped and isolated
Time is dislocated
Eternity is what a moment seems
When I can't feel anything

When life is gone without a trace
And hope is lost in time's embrace
I won't wait or hesitate
'Cause I'm pushing through face-down
I won't wait or hesitate
'Cause I'm pushing through

If time's a song, I won't wait for its reprise
I am done wishing farewells and goodbyes
I won't let this place overshadow my birthright
I won't wait another Eon

Impatiently, I'm cutting through the earth in front of me
Bone on stone, blood and sweat married
Can't hear the voice that whispers fears when my heart is pounding in my ears
All I see in my mind is not what I've left behind
But all the things I've been missing in that lost Eon

Endless night
Long for light
My head against this tomb
And pushing through

Trapped and isolated
Time is dislocated
Eternity is what a moment seems
When I am lost inside this dream
When I can't speak and I can't scream
And I can't feel anything

Face-down and pushing through

Legends Never Die by Against The Current

Lyrics
Spoiler: show
Legends Never Die when the world is calling you
Can you hear them screaming out your name?
Legends Never Die they become a part of you
Every time you bleed for reaching greatness
Relentless you survive

They never lose hope when everything's cold and the fighting's near
It's deep in their bones they’ll run into smoke when the fire is fierce
'Oh pick yourself up, ‘cause

Legends Never Die when the world is calling you
Can you hear them screaming out your name?
Legends Never Die they become a part of you
Every time you bleed for reaching greatness
Legends Never Die

They're written down in eternity
But you'll never see the price it costs, the scars collected all their lives

When everything’s lost, they pick up their hearts and avenge defeat
Before it all starts, they suffer through harm just to touch a dream
'Oh pick yourself up, ‘cause

Legends Never Die when the world is calling you
Can you hear them screaming out your name?
Legends Never Die they become a part of you
Every time you bleed for reaching greatness
Legends Never Die

When the world is calling out your name
Begging you to fight
Pick yourself up once more
Pick yourself up, ‘cause

Legends Never Die when the world is calling you
Can you hear them screaming out your name?
Legends Never Die they become a part of you
Every time you bleed for reaching greatness
Legends Never Die

Working Class Hero - John Lennon. Sums up the indoctrination of the masses to work for "the man", and the flaws therein:

As soon as you're born they make you feel small
By giving you no time instead of it all
Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
They hurt you at home and they hit you at school
They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool
Till you're so fucking crazy you can't follow their rules
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
When they've tortured and scared you for twenty-odd years
Then they expect you to pick a career
When you can't really function you're so full of fear
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV
And you think you're so clever and classless and free
But you're still fucking peasants as far as I can see
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
There's room at the top they're telling you still
But first you must learn how to smile as you kill
If you want to be like the folks on the hill
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
If you want to be a hero well just follow me
If you want to be a hero well just follow me

And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath, and one day closer to death
Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines

Time by Pink Floyd

Mine too. An absolute masterpiece!

Plug my favorite "Society" again, by Eddie Vedder

It's a mystery to me
We have a greed
With which we have agreed

You think you have to want
More than you need
Until you have it all you won't be free

Society, you're a crazy breed
I hope you're not lonely without me

When you want more than you have
You think you need
And when you think more than you want
Your thoughts begin to bleed

I think I need to find a bigger place
'Cause when you have more than you think
You need more space

Society, you're a crazy breed
I hope you're not lonely without me

Society, crazy and deep
I hope you're not lonely without me

There's those thinking more or less less is more
But if less is more how you're keeping score?
Means for every point you make
Your level drops
Kinda like it's starting from the top
You can't do that

Society, you're a crazy breed
I hope you're not lonely without me
Society, crazy and deep
I hope you're not lonely without me

Society, have mercy on me
I hope you're not angry if I disagree
Society, crazy and deep
I hope you're not lonely without me

Another one for Pink Floyd's "Time". If you don't take control of your own life, you may wake up someday and wonder what happened. "Waiting for someone or something to show you the way". "No one told you when to run/ You missed the starting gun". I think of FIRE every time I listen to that song. That basically describes my pre-FIRE life, too. Now I feel that I'm actually on track for something great.

I would also add Billy Joel's "Movin' Out". This was always an angsty song for me in my college years, now I realize just how true it is - people trading in their lives for extra money they can trash.
He's tradin' in his Chevy for a Cadillac
 You oughta know by now
 And if he can't drive
 With a broken back
At least he can polish the fenders

+1 for Society.

I like Simple Man

Mama told me when I was young
"Come sit beside me, my only son
And listen closely to what I say
And if you do this it'll help you some sunny day"
"Oh, take your time, don't live too fast
Troubles will come and they will pass
You'll find a woman and you'll find love
And don't forget, son, there is someone up above"
"And be a simple kind of man
Oh, be something you love and understand
Baby be a simple kind of man
Oh, won't you do this for me, son, if you can"
"Forget your lust for the rich man's gold
All that you need is in your soul
And you can do this, oh baby, if you try
All that I want for you, my son, is to be satisfied"
"And be a simple kind of man
Oh, be something you love and understand
Baby be a simple kind of man
Oh, won't you do this for me, son, if you can"
Oh yes, I will
"Boy, don't you worry, you'll find yourself
Follow your heart and nothing else
And you can do this, oh baby, if you try
All that I want for you, my son, is to be satisfied"
"And be a simple kind of man
Oh, be something you love and understand
Baby be a simple kind of man
Oh, won't you do this for me, son, if you can"
Baby, be a simple, really simple man
Oh, be something you love and understand
Baby, be a simple, kind of simple man

I'm surprised no one said "Take This Job and Shove it!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dKTX30MTx4

Take this job and shove it
I ain't working here no more
My woman done left and took all the reasons
I was working for
You better not try to stand in my way
'Cause I'm walkin' out the door
Take this job and shove it
I ain't working here no more
I been workin' in this factory
For nigh on fifteen years
All this time I watched my woman
Drownin' in a pool of tears
And I've seen a lot of good folks die
That had a lot of bills to pay
I'd give the shirt right offa' my back
If I had the guts to say
Take this job and shove it
I ain't working here no more
My woman done left and took all the reasons
I was workin' for
You better not try to stand in my way
'Cause I'm walkin' out the door
Take this job and shove it
I ain't workin' here no more
Well that foreman, he's a regular dog
The line boss, he's a fool
Got a brand new flattop haircut
Lord, he thinks he's cool
One of these days I'm gonna' blow my top
And that sucker, he's gonna' pay
Lord I can't wait to see their faces
When I get the nerve to say
Take this job and shove it
I ain't working here no more
My woman done left and took all the reasons
I was workin for
You better not try to stand in my way
'Cause I'm walkin' out the door
Take this job and shove it
I ain't workin' here no more
Take this job and shove it

The one that continues to tug at me every time I hear it is Hello Dreamer by Laikipia.

Music video is not what I expected, but here is a link to the song

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtB3yRpinlE&list=RDgtB3yRpinlE&start_radio=1&t=257

[Verse]
Hello dreamer
You've been dreaming for so long
Now you're waking and you're still waiting for sun
To come along
All your fantasies pointed at things you can't see
You're caging yourself when you want to be free
Tell me, what do you want and what do you need to see?
Your dreams are your reality

[Pre-Chorus]
Let's leave everything and go travelling
See what tomorrow brings
It's only a choice away
Let's pack up and leave today
Tell me what do you have to lose?
Are you living the life you'd choose?
There's a place we can live like kings
Let's see what tomorrow brings

[Chorus]
Hello dreamer
You've been dreaming for so long
Now you're waking and you're still waiting for the sun
To come along

[Verse]
All your fantasies pointed at things you can't see
You're caging yourself when you want to be free
Tell me, what do you want and what do you need to see?
Your dreams are your reality

[Chorus]
Hello dreamer
You've been dreaming for so long
Now you're waking and you're still waiting for the sun
To come along

[Bridge]
Cold in your heart
Where's the energy gone?
You were slow at the start
Now it's taking too long
You hope for the day
When they tell you you've won
But before that day comes
All your days will be done

[Pre-Chorus]
Let's leave everything and go travelling
See what tomorrow brings
It's only a choice away
Let's pack up and leave today
Tell me what do have to lose
Are you living the life you'd choose?
There's a place we can live like kings
Let's see what tomorrow brings

[Chorus]
All your fantasies pointed at things you can't see
You're caging yourself when you want to be free
Tell me, what do you want and what do you need to see?
Your dreams are your reality

I've added a couple - "Sweet Freedom" by Michael McDonald and "Pressure Drop" by Duran Duran ("Everybody everywhere, step out in to the future/It's time to take the pressure off"). 10 weeks, can't wait!

After watching an interview with Dolly Parton on TV yesterday, I was reminded of the song "Working 9-5, what a way to make a living". That song is a good reason to want to pursue FIRE.

"9 To 5"

Tumble outta bed
And I stumble to the kitchen
Pour myself a cup of ambition
And yawn and stretch
And try to come to life

Jump in the shower
And the blood starts pumpin'
Out on the street
The traffic starts jumpin'
The folks like me on the job from 9 to 5

Workin' 9 to 5,
What a way to make a livin'
Barely gettin' by
It's all takin' and no givin'
They just use your mind
And they never give you credit
It's enough to drive you crazy
If you let it

9 to 5, for service and devotion
You would think that I
Would deserve a fair promotion
Want to move ahead
But the boss won't seem to let me
I swear sometimes that man is out to get me

They let you dream
Just to watch 'em shatter
You're just a step
On the boss-man's ladder
But you got dreams
He'll never take away

You're in the same boat
With a lot of your friends
Waitin' for the day your ship'll come in
'N' the tide's gonna turn
And it's all gonna roll your way

Workin' 9 to 5
What a way to make a livin'
Barely gettin' by
It's all takin' and no givin'
They just use your mind
And you never get the credit
It's enough to drive you crazy
If you let it

9 to 5, yeah
They got you where they want you
There's a better life
And you think about it, don't you?
It's a rich man's game
No matter what they call it
And you spend your life
Puttin' money in his wallet

9 to 5, whoa
What a way to make a livin'
Barely gettin' by
It's all takin' and no givin'
They just use your mind
And they never give you credit
It's enough to drive you crazy
If you let it

9 to 5, yeah
They got you where they want you
There's a better life
And you dream about it, don't you?
It's a rich man's game
No matter what they call it
And you spend your life
Puttin' money in his wallet

Working 9 to 5

I've No More Fucks To Give

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vqbk9cDX0l0

I've tried, tried, tried, and i've tried even more
I've cried, cried, cried, and I can't recall what for
I've pressed, i've pushed, i've yelled, i've begged
In hopes of some success
But the inevitable fact is that it never will impress!
I've no more fucks to give
My fucks have runeth dry
I've tried to go fuck shopping but there's no fucks left to buy!
I've no more fucks to give
Though more fucks i've tried to get
I'm over my fuck budget, and i'm now in fucking debt!
I strive, strive, strive, to get everything done
I've played by all the rules, but i've very rarely won
I've smiled, i've charmed, i've wooed and laughed, alas to no avail
I've run round like a moron, to unequivocally fail!
I've no more fucks left to give
My fuck fuse has just blown
I've been hunting for my fucks all day
But they've upped and fucked off home!
I've no more fucks to give
My fuck rations are depleted
I've rallied my fuck army but it's been fucking defeated!
The effort has just not been worth the time or the expense!
I've exhausted all my energy, for minimal recompense!
The distinct lack of acknowledgement has now begun to gall!
And i've come to realize that I don't give a fuck at all!
I've no more fucks to give
My fucks have flown away
My fucks are now so fucked up they've refused to fucking stay!
I've no more fucks to give
My fucks have gone insane
They've come back round and passed me while they're fucking off again!
I've no more fucks to give
My fucks have all dissolved
I've planned many projects, but my fucks won't be involved!
I've no more fucks to give
My fucks have all been spent
They've fucked off from the building
And I don't know where they've went!
I've no more fucks to give!
I've no more fucks to give!
I've no more fucks!
I've no more fucks!
I've no more fucks to give!

Movin Out by Billy Joel.

Anthony works in the grocery store
Savin' his pennies for someday
Mama Leone left a note on the door
She said, Sonny, move out to the country
Workin' too hard can give you
A heart attack (ack)
You oughta know by now (oughta know)
Who needs a house out in Hackensack
Is that what you get with your money

It seems such a waste of time
If that's what it's all about
Mama if that's movin' up
Then I'm movin' out
I'm movin' out
Sergeant O'Leary is walkin' the beat
At night he becomes a bartender
He works at Mister Cacciatore's down
On Sullivan Street
Across from the medical center
He's tradin' in his Chevy for a Cadillac
You oughta know by now
And if he can't drive
With a broken back
At least he can polish the fenders

It seems such a waste of time
If that's what it's all…

My favorite FIRE-y song is Je Veux ("I Want"), by Zaz. Even better, though, I actually did put a whole playlist together for working on spreadsheets or investments or what have you, and it just so happens that the song right before the song I'm posting is Movin Out, the one from the last post! :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7X9kpHB7Aow

(translation)

Give me a suite of rooms in Ritz hotel, I wouldn't want it
Chanel jewellery, I wouldn't want it
Give me a limousine, what would I do with that?
Pay a staff for me, what would I do with them?
A manor-house in Neufchatel, I'm not meant for that
Buy me the Eiffel Tower, what would I do with that?

I want love, joy and cheerfulness
Your money won't buy me happiness
I just want to die with a hand on my chest
Let's go together discover my freedom
Let you forget all your stereotypes
Welcome into my reality

I'm sick of your good manners, they're more than I can take
I eat with my hands - that's just the way I am
I'm loud and straightforward, pardon me
Down with hypocrisy, I'm outta here!
I'm sick of their wooden language
Just look at me, anyway I don't bear a grudge and that's the way I am!

I want love, joy and cheerfulness
Your money won't buy me happiness
I just want to die with a hand on my chest
Let's go together discover my freedom
Let you forget all your stereotypes
Welcome into my reality

...it's honestly probably meant more in the artsy bohemian way, considering that "money can buy happiness" is kind of the point of the whole FIRE thing. But hey, it's rejecting consumerism and talking about life satisfaction, so that's most of the way there!

So many good songs and lyrics that tie in well w/FIRE!

For me, it's a lot about being different from the crowd ("normal people"). I am so lucky that I have found the FIRE movement, MMM

I think lots of Mu$tachian$ tend toward nonconformity.

Here's "Money" by Pink Floyd

Money, get away
Get a good job with good pay and you're okay
Money, it's a gas
Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash
New car, caviar, four star daydream
Think I'll buy me a football team
Money, get back
I'm all right Jack keep your hands off of my stack
Money, it's a hit
Don't give me that do goody good bullshit
I'm in the high-fidelity first class traveling set
And I think I need a Lear jet
Money, it's a crime…

Maybe this (Tove Styrke is incredible live)

Now think about it how cool it would it be
To have diamonds on the soles of my feet
But I worn these sneakers since I was 13
It's just cruel, it ain't sweet
Count my blessings easily
It goes 3, 2, 1, me

You want some of that green rain?
That chi-kaching, chi-kaching
You want a 20 karat ball and chain?
Kaching, kaching
You want a pilot and a jet plane?
They go a chi-kaching, chi-kaching
Newsflash, it ain’t worth the pain
Kaching, kaching

Think about how chic it would be
With rhinestones on my sheets
Like a queen, pockets leak
Mmm, so empty indeed
And that’s just cruel, it ain’t sweet
I give up so easily
It’s still 3, 2, 1, me....

Killing Yourself To Live by Black Sabbath

Well people look and people stare
Well I don't think that I even care
You work your life away and what do they give?
You're only killing yourself to live

Killing yourself to live
Killing yourself to live

Just take a look around you what do you see
Pain, suffering, and misery
It's not the way that the world was meant
It's a pity you don't understand

Killing yourself to live
Killing yourself to live

One Piece At A Time by Johnny Cash.  Instead of car parts, I carried out chunks of money.  It was a 95, 96,...,17, 18 retirement.

I had posted this in the 2020 FIRE group - My FIRE song contribution is Solsbury Hill by Peter Gabriel - which I choose to interpret as having the courage to letting go of the boring and safe status quo to risk reaching for something better

Solsbury Hill

Peter Gabriel, Lou Reed

Climbing up on Solsbury Hill
I could see the city light
Wind was blowing, time stood still
Eagle flew out of the night

He was something to observe
Came in close, I heard a voice
Standing stretching every nerve
Had to listen had no choice

I did not believe the information
I just had to trust imagination
My heart going boom boom boom
"Son," he said, "Grab your things, I've come to take you home."

To keepin' silence I resigned
My friends would think I was a nut
Turning water into wine
Open doors would soon be shut

So I went from day to day
Tho' my life was in a rut
'Till I thought of what I'd say
Which connection I should cut

I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey," he said, "grab your things, I've come to take you home."

When illusion spin her net
I'm never where I want to be
And liberty she pirouette
When I think that I am free

Watched by empty silhouettes
Who close their eyes, but still can see
No one taught them etiquette
I will show another me

Today I don't need a replacement
I'll tell them what the smile on my face meant
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey," I said, "You can keep my things, they've come to take me home."

It’s also in an unusual time signature, 7/4 (except for a couple of 4/4 bars in the refrain), so it definitely doesn’t stick to the status quo! Great choice.

Currently going to have to go with Double Down by Slothrust

I do what I want
I say what I want
I wear what I want

I'm walking away
You know I don't mind
I chill by myself

You know I'm flyin'
High
I'm way up in the
Sky
Don't even have to try
'Cause I can see everything

Da da da da da da doo
Da da da da da doo
Da da da da da doo

Da da da da da da doo
Da da da da da doo
Da da da da da doo

I'm going to not conform to your nonconformity norms by picking a conformist song.  I still work, but by the time I leave my current job (which I generally like) I'll be close enough to real FIRE that I can pretty much pick whatever job I want and not need to worry to much about income.  So my FIRE song is my message to my former high-stress, high-paying employers, as performed by Taylor Swift:

We are never ever, ever getting back together
We are never ever, ever getting back together
You go talk to your friends, talk to my friends, talk to me
But we are never ever, ever, ever getting back together

This is a Dutch song that states that money makes you happy.

https://www.songteksten.nl/songteksten/3030/amazing-stroopwafels/geld-maakt-gelukkig.htm

Amazing Stroopwafels - Geld Maakt Gelukkig

refr.(2x)

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
