What is a reasonable wardrobe?
« on: November 12, 2013, 07:43:15 AM »
Just wondering what people's opinions on here are.  :)

I have 4 pairs of jeans working right now, 6 sweaters, 4 hoodies, maybe 2-3 dozen various casual tops/shirts (? not going to go count; probably half or more are T-shirts past their prime). 2 pairs of dress pants, 5 dressy blouses, 2 skirts, 2 dresses (that fit). Probably around a dozen pairs of shoes including dress shoes (4 pairs-rarely worn but non-interchangeable) and hiking boots. 1 shorts, 1 capris, 2 pairs yoga pants, 2 yoga capris, 1 athletic shorts. This can get me through 2 weeks between laundry normally before I start lacking something, and any formal events that may come up (e.g. weddings, conferences).

I can't think of anything I don't use fairly regularly, except maybe some T shirts that need to be retired, so I think that's pretty reasonable.

I think what you have sounds reasonable.

I thought a lot about this when deciding how much clothing to buy my kids, and then applied it to my life too.  I do laundry once a week.  So I figure I want everyone to have 10 days worth of clothes (just so its not an emergency if we miss a day of laundry).  So I have clothes for all seasons that represent 10 typical days.  For me that means 7 work outfits and 3 weekend outfits.  That's all I have for my kids, just 10 days of outfits.

But for myself, I also have one outfit for each season that I consider wedding appropriate, and one outfit for each season that I consider funeral appropriate.   Not that I only wear the black sheath dress I have to funerals, but I like knowing that I have something appropriate for those sorts of occasions.

I live in an area that has definite seasons, so I have to own things for winter (which ranges 40-60 degrees) and summer (averages in the high 80s-low 90s).

My work wardrobe consists of about 10 casual dresses (most sleeveless or short sleeved, a few 3/4 length sleeved), 1 skirt, 4 pair of dark-colored jeans (yeah, I'm not supposed to wear jeans, but no one seems to realize that I'm not wearing khakis or black slacks, and I much prefer the jeans), probably 20 nice short-sleeved tops, and 5-6 cardigan sweaters.  In my climate it works well to spend on short sleeved shirts /wear them with sweaters in the colder weather; same thing for dresses -- most are short sleeved, but the cardigan sweaters make them span the seasons.  I'm sure people up North couldn't get away with this.

My casual wardrobe:  1 pair of jeans -- I fell while carrying something heavy and ripped my other pair beyond modest wearing, and I really do need to pick up another pair.  5-6 sweatshirts and perhaps 30 tee-shirts (which could stand some weeding out).  Perhaps 6-7 pairs of shorts.  Several pairs of sweatpants and yoga pants.

Hmmm . . . . my closet isn't over-crowded, and I think of my wardrobe as relatively small . . .  but spelled out like that, it seems quite decadent.  And I didn't include pajamas or accessories like tights and socks.

I'm very close to you, galliver, in terms of what I own--maybe slightly fewer T-shirts, fewer hoodies, WAY more cardigans (7-8) in addition to the sweaters. It seems about right in terms of quantity, I feel like this is enough but not quite too much. I've lived with less, but it's nice to have the options.

My climate is slightly colder than MrsPete; not much, but I get cold very easily. In the winter, I wear long sleeve T-shirts under short-sleeve dresses, and a sweater over, them and that works fine. I still own 2-3 dresses which cannot be work year round even with layers, and they will be weeded out in time. I hate the "change of season, swap your wardrobe" thing.

I have about half a dozen jeans.  A dozen turtleneck shirts.  Half a dozen sweaters.  This is what I wear on weekdays, rain or shine, because my office building is kept chilled year round.  Perhaps the other tenants are hanging sides of beef in their suites.  The last week or two I have been wearing a stocking cap and fuzzy scarf at work, but really it is just as bad in the summer.  My fingers and nose will go cold at my desk, even on a day I got too much sun riding my bike to work.  So much for the company's "green initiative."

I hate that...although on my campus I think it's a bit worse...in some buildings it's blazing in the WINTER and freezing in the SUMMER. Top 10 engineering school! Why can't we figure it out!?
