Title: What do you plan to do in FIRE?
Post by: Adam Zapple on March 22, 2018, 07:00:27 AM
I assume many will continue to work in some capacity, or volunteer.  What do you plan to do?

Start off with a bang by doing a 75ish day road trip. Then return home and indulge in the following hobbies: board games, reading, walking, video games, day hikes and music appreciation.

In a less day-to-day aspect, I plan on being there (with my wife) for our kids should they need advice, laundry, child care, etc. I'll also probably find some place to volunteer some time.

I will resume being the primary caregiver for our kids, and work on our farm-ette.  And increase my daily exercise back where I want it to be.  Screw that sitting-at-a-desk shit.  Cannot wait.

Starting out with the idea to slow travel, scuba dive, fish, commune with nature and volunteer but will let life develop organically and see where it takes us.

Bike across America. And back.

Hike the Appalachian Trail.

Bike across Australia and the length of New Zealand.

Climb the highest point in Norway.

Catch up on all the reading I want to do.

Write a novel.

So many things!
-hike, hike, hike! Long camping backpacking trips...(PCT through hike, Everest Base Camp, so many others on the list)
-cross stitch
-read
-play piano
-learn more languages
-travel
-run! I just started running a month ago and I MAY be hooked...
-find something about which I am passionate and volunteer (probably something with the environment/nature or underprivileged kids tutoring?).

All the things I barely get to do while I sit behind a desk for 40 hours a week...

Just over five weeks to go for me and DW!  We have some travel plans, we’ve just become grandparents, but mostly we’re just going to learn how “not to work”.  - often referred to herein as decompression.  We’ll make longer term plans next year maybe.

That's 286 weeks, or 5.5 years. Not counting the time in-between adventures to plan/provision/and relax and spend time on other stuff.

At some point we also plan to learn how to sail, with the goal of eventually doing a multi year circumnavigation on a 35-40' sailboat.

Most people fall into one of two camps 1) very extensive travel 2) nothing really ("I'm going to hike and read, maybe volunteer to walk a dog at the shelter").

I fall into the latter which is why I expect to work part time (only about half way to FI now).

Lmao. There will definitely be some video games at our house too.

But most importantly: BUILD AN EARTHSHIP, move to the country, eat a lot of peaches. :)

I'd like to travel around to see friends and family too but that might have to wait a bit until we don't have a dog and two cats in tow.

My SO has grand ideas about saving the planet via black soldier flies, so I'm sure there will be quite a few science experiments going on at our house as well.

- Consider investing in real estate and/or startup businesses.
- Make my own beer.
- Travel a bit more once the kids are old enough to use the toilet and carry some of their own luggage.
- Generally spend a bit more time with my kids.

I'll probably keep up my work from home side gig (probably 500-600hrs/year) but I plan to bounce around from part-time job to part-time job, fun things that I can't do now because they couldn't pay the bills without drastic cuts on lifestyle.
I'd like to work part-time at my local big brewery in some capacity like tour guide. I'd like to work at the local MLB stadium for a season taking tickets or being an usher. Maybe work part-time usher or security or something at a local concert venue. Maybe at my local homebrew shop. I'd kinda like to work in an auto shop or bike shop. All of the jobs I think could be kinda cool, but without needing the money and having the option to walk the moment it wasn't fun anymore.
One at a time of course, with plenty of time for travel, relaxing, home projects, etc

Right after I FIRE In 11 months, I am going to prep to hike the John Muir Trail, which will be my first >7 day backpacking trip and the test to see if I will do the long distance trails over the ensuing years.  Super excited to find out how this goes!

I'll also be going to Kenya for a few weeks, where we have a friend who does research on a baboon project.  I LOVE primates and East Africa, so this is also exciting - and I may stay longer than my boyfriend, who will go back to work, and explore...maybe Ethiopia or other parts of Kenya on my own.

Other trails and travel will constantly be in the works.  But I will fill my other time with:

-getting in better shape - I think one day a week might be a Hiking Day for me, plus lifting a lot more weights
-volunteering for a Food Pantry to reduce food waste in our country and feed hungry mouths.  They need drivers to commit once or twice a week (during normal business hours, so can't do it now) to pick up food from stores that would otherwise be discarded.
-volunteering for political causes.  I do a lot of text banking, postcard writing and other local organizing that I want to increase
-finally become fluent in Spanish.  I WILL figure out the subjunctive when I retire!
-read, listen to podcasts, maybe learn more about plumbing, car maintenance and electricity to be more DIY.

I've actually been working on a retirement list, so I'll just mention briefly some of the items on the list:

Biking (and I already bike quite a bit)
Traveling / Slow Travel / Maybe RVing
Possibly relocating
Hiking / Exploring / Camping
Shoot more pool
More exercise
Home maintenance/improvement
Possibly part time work / side gig
Connecting more with friends/family/etc.
Catch up on some movies
Listen to music
Edit family & friends videos
Fishing
Gardening
Eat healthier
Meditation
Play some chess
Learn a foreign language or musical instrument
Misc. computer stuff (but not too much)
Count my money (lol)

Sleep for at least three months and then think about what I want to do with the rest of my life.

At the moment I think I'm going to hike, run and cycle a lot, visit parents and children more, and when my husband retires too we'll take lots of short vacations to explore places in our own country. And cook and eat proper meals and get the garden in shape. One-off volunteering at events but nothing with an enduring commitment.

And do odds and ends of work if opportunities that take my fancy arise.

- growing my own veggies, herbs and fruit
- learning how to DIY (electrics, carpentry and such)
- install solar panels and pray the sun will reach this cold frogland (Netherlands)
- read my entire book collection. This may take multiple lifetimes actually...
- volunteer on all things environment/animal (not a people's person lol)
- write books
- travel across Europe, US, Canada and Japan, but in short bursts. Max 3 weeks at a time.
- visit friends and family more often
- play loads of board games and solve crossword puzzles
- pet the cats
- take awesome long hot baths

Retired at end of last year and just kind of getting in the groove.   We have a big home and farm so lots of projects to do around here that are fun to me, especially when they don't have to be crammed into a weekend or evening.   Very avid hunter, fisherman, trapper so all kinds of short trips planned and yet to be determined.   Typically deer hunt at least three states, some years elk hunt, usually do a winter hog hunt someplace south, run a trapline for coyotes, fish a lot in 4 or more different states and sometimes go to Canada.   Also have a lake home in MI that we spend lots of time at with kids, grand kids, family and friends.   No problem staying busy here.

2. Volunteer a lot more at a Tiger Rescue non profit
3. Volunteer at our food pantry
4. Do a shit load of veggie gardening
5. Walk the Camino
6. Do my first 50 mile ultra marathon- i’ve Done up to 50k but it is impossible for me to train and organize a crew. For 50 miles w/ a full time job and family.  Can’t freaking wait.

Here's my rough list:
-Double or triple my workout time. Yoga, running, take fitness classes that don't fit into my current life/schedule.
-Train & run events regularly
-Spend more time with my immediate family. Drop the nanny & handle afternoon/summer kid time. (both kids will be in middle school next year)
-Work on the house. This alone is years worth of work
-Spend more time on general life stuff. Keeping the house clean, organized. Making more high quality food.
-Volunteer. Particularly around kid stuff. Not just at the school, but also for bigger impact organizations.
-Spend time with friends
-Help other people out when they need it, not just when I can wedge it into my schedule
-I'm pretty sure I'll also have some sort of side gig, but unclear what/how
-Spend more time at our vacation house
-Get more sleep
-Read more

-Slow travel for years, mostly in lower cost countries. I have snowbird friends who spend summers in Europe and winters in South East Asia, will probably do the same and see how it goes.
-Spend more time with my friends who are scattered around the world. Make new friends with like-minded people.
-Turn off my alarm clock and only use when I absolutely have to.
-Take naps during the day.
-Go to the gym at least 4 times a week, maybe every day. Now i manage to go 2-3 times a week and have to go during peak times.
-Walk on the beach, swim in the ocean or swimming pool.
-Try hiking and other outdoor activities.
-Slowly look for online business/side gig opportunities but I don't want to depend on them to make ends meet. Whatever I earn I will either spend on fancier trips or save for future expenses.
-Read books.

First off, ROAD TRIP! Plan to spend the summer driving across the country rock climbing, hiking, camping, surfing.

Then, lots of rock climbing (including guiding), ice climbing, snowboarding (possibly instructing), surfing, scuba diving, hiking, camping, and jiu jitsu, both domestically and internationally. Once the DW retires (likely 5-7 years after me), we'll slow travel to places we like, where I can also do the above-mentioned things. I'm thinking 2-3 months at a time in places like Mexico, Costa Rica, Thailand, etc., then 2-3 months at home, rinse and repeat.

I will also be looking for volunteer opportunities, probably with the elderly. I have this idea of visiting nursing homes and hospitals to play cribbage with seniors.  My grandmother used to LOVE to play cribbage with me -- right up until she passed away at 95, when I'd ask her, "Meme, would you like to play cribbage?," her eyes would light up and the biggest smile would break across her face. It gave me so much satisfaction to sit and play with her for a few hours, and I know it meant the world to her. Another idea I have is to start a rock climbing summer camp for disadvantaged or at-risk kids.

Try to keep up with my wife who is an Ironman competitor.   (doing her 3rd this summer)

I can't run though because of a hip replacement.

- hike mountains and hills
- read
- make and use telescopes
- finish my cedar strip kayak build
- do more kayaking
- do a lot more biking
- travel across the US
- visit Ireland
- visit Iceland

... sit back and re-assess.

1. Taking off on my one and only bucket trip with old friends - two months in Europe this summer. Can't wait.
2. Brushing up on my French - at present.
3. Reading challenge - 25 finance/economy/science/political/ books this year - and squeezing as many novels and romances in as I can.
4. Gardening - spring gardening has commenced. Party Central - Secret Garden - Veggie-Herb-Flower Garden - my back is killing me:)
5. Walking in the park - walking on the beach - biking on local trails.
6. Writing
7. Photography - change website, format and refresh everything - work in progress
8. Side gigs - on occasion

Trying hard to keep up and continue the major decluttering project I embarked on last year. So far a fail this year only minor progress.
Two more home renovations to tackle...

Relaxing in the garden with a glass of wine and a good book, watching the cat and the birds, ignoring the chores in the house.
Trying out new recipes all the time ... Mr. R. approves since he is still working:)

Hunting and killing animals will always be the weirdest human hobby to me. I guess it gives me some type of zen and feeling of superiority but sheesh, to each their own.

I haven’t fished in years, and have never hunted, but I want to. It has 100% to do with the food source and quality of the meat... zen or “superiority” really have nothing to do with it for most.

My list:
1. Blacksmithing
2. Woodworking
3. Welding
4. Photography
5. Hiking
6. Weightlifting/yoga
7. Kayaking/Biking/etc.
8. Gardening/livestock
9. Fishing/hunting
10. Train/work dog(s)
11. Travel

I get it if you're a herbivore / some variant of & I'm a non hunter, but I totally get it as a hobby:

* Frugal

* Fresh food

* Skill element (I'm a city boy, I doubt I could successfully hunt anything without some training)

* Out in nature

It involves dealing with the side of food supply that most of "polite society" has now outsourced, but we also tend to outsource lots of other somewhat unsavoury or slightly arduous activities.

If/when lab grown meat is tastier & cheaper maybe I'd struggle with it, but right now i totally understand apex predators choosing to source food as a hobby.
