what do YOU do for your birthday?
« on: November 05, 2014, 03:42:28 PM »
Hi peeps!
Today is my 29th birthday and I have absolutely nothing planned for it with my husband and kid other than a small cake from a local, well known bakery. (Very excites about that lol)
other than that I have no special plans. Maybe sushi? My hubby got me from target a small, budget friendly espresso machine.
Everyone is so shocked at this.
Was wondering, what do you guys do for your birthdays? Do you also start feeling the pressure to "celebrate" creep up?

Say happy birthday to each other. Be especially nice. Have something special for dinner (he likes apple pie, so apple pie is made for dinner that night). Occasionally a birthday cake. No gifts.

Carbs...lots and lots of carbs!  ha ha.  Seriously.

Seriously: Mexican food, pizza, Red Vines, cheesecake, BEER.  Take your pick.  All without guilt.

For my boyfriend's birthday, we go on some adventure (this year was paragliding) and I cook all his favourite stuff. For mine we go to a show of some sort (this year it was an opera) and he takes me for lunch or to a bakery for goodies. No gifts. We also can invoke "birthday privilege" to get out of anything we don't want to do, like dishes, cat litter, etc.

Happy Birthday to you. Apart from big birthdays, 40th & 50th, we don't do anything special. I will buy her favourite perfume and she will buy me whiskey, chocolate and a book. Our birthdays are on consecutive days so one meal, homecooked, suffices. If we hit 60, a big trip will be in order, maybe to the USA.

Happy Birthday!

I tend to have multiple little birthday celebrations. SO will take me out to dinner, his family will have Family Supper for me, my mom will bake me a cake/buy me a present, my friends at work brought me a cake...I just like to celebrate :)

SO and I have birthdays about a month apart, so usually we take a trip between the two of them. Rent a house somewhere, take some time out and cook a lot of good food. This year's was the start of my foray into bread making.

Nothing much. My husband makes me very rich chocolate brownies. For his last birthday, I gave him several kinds of craft beer that he'd never had. Some other years we've just given each other a box of chocolates.

I wanted to do something a little fancier for my 50th birthday, but two weeks before it, I was unceremoniously laid off without warning, so THAT was not a fun birthday.

Went to a conference for work.  Came home to leftovers.  We actually celebrated my birthday on Sunday, with Black Eyed Pea chili.  There were no leftovers!

DH and I have our birthday two days apart. Every year since we've been together we've taken a vacation to celebrate. Sometimes it's just a long weekend at a B&B. Sometimes we've been overseas on a longer trip. Because we celebrate this way, I can remember every birthday we've ever had together.

We've also started doing the same for my son's birthdays. Each time, we've spent a long weekend in a cottage near a quiet beach with his Aunt and Grandparents also making the trip.

We find it a lovely way to spend some quality time together and celebrate another year passing.

Happy Birthday!  My grandmother's birthday was Nov 5 and I thought about her a lot today.  Mine is actually this week also.  My husband and I will go out to dinner and I will order desert (which I wouldn't normally get).  We have grown children and grandchildren, so this weekend we will have a family gathering and grill hamburgers and have cake and ice cream.  My children will give me movie theater gift cards (probably) and the grandchildren will give me hand drawn cards.  It will be perfect.

My must have:

Someone says happy birthday within 5 minutes of meeting me ( my own family, no coworkers)

After that it is all gravy. Homemade cake. No cards unless home made please!  No presents that require electricity.  I would rather have no present.

My mom like to take my family out to eat. That is nice too.

Talk to my family members on Skype. I try to call my Mom at the exact minute I was born, and make it more of a gratitude to her celebration than about me. Oh, and of course calories consumed on your birthday don't count ;)

We have a similar birthday situation in our house to Irishstache.

This year I celebrated by 30th by having some friends over.  I made an ice cream cake and we drank and played some ukuleles.  Our daughter's second birthday was the next day, so everyone helped by building her play house (thanks grandma and grandpa) and blowing up a couple packs of balloons.  I woke up early and super hung over the next morning, but still managed to get our daughter's cake, and cake ice cream cones, and mega bubbles done (they didn't work, but the kids liked playing in the sudsy water, what can I say, I tried).

Almost always camping.  My 40th we had a big bbq party on our deck with lots of food and friends.

The last few years we've been out on the sailboat, but it has been expensive and we're selling it, so that's likely over.  I think next year I'd like to be on a canoe trip (a favorite of mine is the Powell Lake Loop).

If it was in the winter we'd probably go x-country skiing or maybe snowboarding.

DW's and my birthdays are 2 days apart.  We go on a Caribbean vacation for that week every year (around Memorial Day weekend).

This year I'm hitting a milestone birthday, so I'm doing a snowboarding trip to Hokkaido, Japan this winter with some buds.  Can't wait.

Go to war, mostly.  In the last 11 years I've been away for 8 birthdays: 5 to the Middle East, 1 to a disaster relief mission, and 2 training events.  When I'm home my wife cooks a grand meal and gets a small cake dripping in various forms of chocolate.

I usually spend my birthday celebrating my daughters! She was born on my 25th birthday. But, DH will usually make me crepes with berries and cream for breakfast which I love, sometimes we exchange small gifts, but normally we just do something together.

Hooray for breakfast crepes!  That is my tradition, too.

In the evening:  kayaking with friends and a potluck picnic by the river.

My birthday was last Wednesday and as I do every year, got a Baskin Robbins ice cream cake! That is quite enough to keep me happy!

Well, today happens to be my birthday!  I got a haircut first thing this morning, then had an hour to kill before my meeting, so went all fancy and got oatmeal and coffee from Starbuck's.  Rode both of my horses after work, went for a run, and am now eating the salad DH prepared for me, along with a glass of wine.

Saturday we're going out to a nice restaurant, and I plan to go all-in with apps, fancy cocktails and a steak.  DH's birthday is next month, and we set aside a couple little pots of non-paycheck money so we'll be throwing down $300 for two dinners, but it only happens twice a year, so we really look forward to it.

Don't really do anything for gifts anymore.

Generally my husband buys me something, often something I don't want, but last year it was a Roomba, which has Changed. My. Life. I try to think of something to tell him about, because it hurts his feelings when I take things back (but I do it anyway).

Also, I don't have to cook on my birthday, and calories don't count. This means chocolate, and usually a drive for Thai food, and since that's at least an hour each way, the celebratory meal tends to fall on the weekend closest to the actual day.

His birthday involves a present which I hope he likes better than I like mine sometimes. Last year's was a used computer game which he still spends more time interacting with than he does with me, so last year was a present win...

His celebratory meal, also eaten out, involves good BBQ ribs. I don't cook or eat pork with the exception of bacon. Bacon is too good to miss, so I just pretend it's a vegetable or something. :-)

Happy birthday to everyone celebrating one now!

This past birthday my husband took me to my favorite brunch place and gave me cards from him and the cats.  That's as far as I want to go these days.  If my birthday falls on a weekday I take the day off from work if I'm able, but a couple of years ago I actually had to work OVERTIME on it because of a big project.  Actually getting out of school/work on my birthday started a while ago.  My birthday's at the end of September, and since the high school I attended had mostly Jewish students it was always closed for the High Holy Days (Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur).  Three out of my four years of high school my birthday fell on one of those days.  The other year, it was on a Saturday.  Mazel tov!

My birthday is in 2 days...I'm not a big b-day guy.  Usually we just have our family over for a nice dinner, my kids will make me cards and get me little somethings, and my wife will make a cake.  That's about it.  We only really do 'special' stuff for the kids birthdays.

Damn, Travis -- please accept my gratitude for your service.  That sounds very, very dfficult.  I missed Thanksgiving Day and Christmas one year while on deployment, and while it was hard being away from family, I recall that Christmas spent with my shipmates in the Persian Gulf as perhaps my most memorable.

But 11 years of being away for birthdays and the like?  I can't imagine that.

The last 2 years, I've worked on my birthday.  2013, I made cupcakes and brought them to work.  This year, a coworker bought me a slice of cake from the cafeteria.  In 2011, Husband and Kid and I went to the beach and later made ice cream, and I honestly don't remember 2012.

I really don't care about presents.  My mom usually buys me a gift card from a store I never shop at.  That's about it.

I have to admit it's made me pretty jaded on celebrating holidays, but it also makes my in-laws more determined to make sure I celebrate when I finally get home.  My birthday is in October so I tend to miss all the big events in one shot (wedding anniversary in September, Thanksgiving, Christmas).  My MIL is a gracious host and really goes out of her way when I visit.

I travel.  My company has a VERY generous PTO policy and I generally need to find excuses to take vacation because nothing rolls from year to year.

I try to visit friends I don't get to see much since my move to Florida.  My parents still insist on buying me a birthday present so I ask them for super cheap plane tickets on the budget carriers.  Heading up to Chicago next May for the big 35. :-)

For my birthday we really do not do anything.  My husband may buy me some candy (even though Ive asked him not too) and my children will make me cards.  This year I worked, so I took a nap and didn't have to do any dishes that day when I got home.  I think we ordered pizza.

For my husband we tend to go out for dinner at a restaurant where the birthday person eats free.  No gifts.  I may make cupcakes.

We let the birthday person plan a day on the Saturday closest to their birthday. It's almost always entirely free except for a meal out (or take-out). Otherwise, we keep it pretty frugal. For my birthday, we went to a museum with free admission, took a long walk with our dog, and went out for brunch (which we do once a year--on my birthday!). For my husband's bday, we went hiking and then to a fancy beer store so he could pick out a few beers. We got inexpensive take-out BBQ for dinner. We don't do gifts (other than beer & food). We love to celebrate, but we do not love to spend money :).

Watch the Perseids meteor shower if it's a clear night.  Go for a walk with my dog in a beautiful natural area.  Enjoy a special cupcake.  Spend time at home with family in the evening.  Simple tastes here :)

My birthday also happens during the Perseids.  When I used to be a treeplanter in Northern BC I'd stay up late and watch them on my birthday.  One year (24?) we had a bonus utterly mindblowing Aurora Borealis to go with them.

Thanks guys! And happy belated birthdays!
I ended up going to the cheap (but yummy) sushi place with my son and hubby and then came home to eat my cake with them and mt sister and her family and chat over the cake and coffee (our families have contrary schedules so it was nice to get together with my sister for a few hours).
Hubby still insists on gifts- thankfully he is practical and frugal :)
I got an espresso machine from Target. Yay! We, of course, initiated it that night and we had cappuchinos with our cake :) perfect bday.

Hire a babysitter and go out for a fancy dinner.  Sadly, rich food and a glass of wine doesn't agree so well with us as we're getting older, so we have to think of something we enjoy that doesn't leave us with indigestion.  Perhaps scale it down to a dessert outing rather than a 3 course French dinner.

We usually go to our favorite Italian spot for homemade pasta.  Then we get some homemade cookies from the bakery and a bottle of wine on the way home.  I wouldn't like to do any big parties or nights out.

I took my wife on a nature hike in the Poconos for her birthday and we went to a free rock concert.
