And to answer the OP, I paid $2.49 at the local station.  MA is more expensive than other areas of the country.  Still my fill ups have gone from $60 to $38 or so in the past few months.

My wife and I both paid 1.69 at two different stations (Costco and Western Fuel) in Fort Collins, CO two days ago.  We paid $22 and $21 each to fill up.  I looked back to July and it cost us $45-$50 per tank then.  That's a nice difference!

I filled up at the same location (Costco) yesterday... filled my tank for $15.

nedwin, were you at the get together at MMM's house a while back?

I didn't buy gas this week because I took public transportation.  Gas prices just dropped under $3 a gallon in Chicago.  Looks like we are way behind other parts of the nation.

Wow, we're just dipping below $2 out in the suburbs.  $1.98 at the Costco in Naperville.

gas?

We have a plug-in hybrid.  Maybe next month.

$2.09 in Tucson.  I see on my cheap gas map it's as low as $1.99 here.

Problem is, public transportation isn't lowering prices!

You are sort of right that gas prices are low because of fracking, but not the way you think.  OPEC is refusing to constrain supplies as demand has fallen because they are in a price war with the US and other oil suppliers.  It is always cheaper to pump oil out the ground than to frack it, and the OPEC countries have enough of a cushion to sell oil at a very low cost for awhile, even compared to the other "pumpers".  They are trying to eliminate other suppliers.   Russia and Venezuela are really hurting because they are taking a loss, but OPEC can afford it for awhile.

That's not accurate. They are definitely hurting, but not because they are selling at a loss like American frackers soon might. They still mostly make a profit on what they pump out of the ground however margins are much lower and their economies are so based on oil revenues that they can't afford to import everything else like they used to. It's really shameful that a country as big as Russia derives 50% of government revenue from oil.

When I filled up my tank a couple of weeks ago it was $2.44/gal and then with my Fred Meyer discount of .20/gal I only paid $2.24/gal.  However, when I drove by the other day on the way to a big family dinner I noticed the price had gone down to $2.29/gal before any discounts.  Seems to be dropping steadily and rapidly.  Maybe by the time I fill up again (probably within a few days) it will be below $2. :)

I paid $2.49, but I saw $2.35. South Florida is above the national average during the winter months. We get alot of visitors from up north in the winter and the population triples. Increased demand results in higher prices. When everyone leaves in April/May (including me), prices will most likely go below the national average.

OP here -

I noted on gasbuddy.com this a.m. that Missouri gas (my home state with usually the lowest prices due to low taxes) averaged 1.93 which is what I saw on the way to work.

The lowest in the state is $1.70 with several stations showing that!

I also noted that gas taxes vary widely by state with New Jersey at 14.5 cents per gallon to California at 53 cents.   Check your state rate here --  http://taxfoundation.org/blog/map-state-gasoline-tax-rates-2014

Federal taxes are 18.4.

The US now produces something like 9 million barrels (53 US gallons per barrel) per day.   This is close to Saudi and Russia.  While we still import something like 6 millions barrels per day.

I heard on the radio that crude oil spiked a bit today due to a problem at some Libyan refinery.  So it may be awhile before prices go down more or this might be the bottom?

Keep biking and converting to fewer miles with more fuel efficient cars and the US could reach energy independence in relatively few years.

Volkswagon has produced a car with 300 MPG http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/concept-cars/vw-reveals-new-300mpg-coupe.  We can also look to electric cars with 200 mile ranges in just 2 years as battery technology has now doubled storage capacity.  http://www.automobilemag.com/features/news/1407-next-chevrolet-volt-to-get-200-mile-range-in-2016/

Here is a 2012 Honda Civic getting 68 mpg --- http://www.autoblog.com/2011/04/30/honda-civic-hybrid-hypermile/

Low mileage Honda Civics can be had in the 10K range.  So if you're commuting 30 miles per day and getting 25 mpg, it may worth a look to trade?

NJ has the lowest gas tax, but it's also full service only, which is why it's not the cheapest gas in the country. Near me, it's $2.15/gal now, filled up this past weekend at $2.17 after xmas travel. In the next month or so, <$2 should be common in my area. As long as Oil remains this low, gas will continue to fall a bit more. I don't foresee oil jumping a fair amount any time soon. Then again, no one can predict the future :).

Traveled through Virginia, Tennessee and Southeast Missouri over the last week.  Filled up in Lebanon, TN for $1.88/gal on Saturday, which was the lowest price we saw anywhere on the trip.  Sadly, back in Northern VA, it's still in the mid $2.40's.

Filled up at 113.7 a couple days ago. It was about $44 for a full tank.

The prices seem to have edged up into the $1.15 range for the holiday season though.

Amazingly the price continues to fall.  In my area it is listed at $1.90 down from $1.93 yesterday.

I checked gas buddy and one station in St. Louis is shown as selling it for $1.57!

I checked oil barrel pricing and there was a 2% drop today.

If we dip to the $40 per barrel promised land vs. $53 today,  the whole of the US could be looking at sub $1.50.

I was so confused by this until I realized you're in Australia.  I'm still confused but now I'm at peace with it.  BTW, is your tank 0.387 gallons?

Haha, the tank was about 39-40L worth (44L tank). I think that's about 10.5 US gallons.

Multiply the Aussie price per litre by 3.79 to get gallons and 0.81 to get US dollars (so that's about $3.47US a gallon) :)

2.03 by me in NJ. About 3.5 months ago, it was $1 more. It'll be under $2 in the next week. The drop in the last week was about $0.10 so it's crazy!

It went up 40 cents yesterday locally.  $1.69 in the morning, $2.09 in the afternoon at the cheapest place.  Some others I passed were 5-10 cents higher.  What happened yesterday?

About half of our local pumps jumped 30 cents too.  The other half stayed the same.  Crude dropped to $48.  Not sure what's going on exactly.  Still haven't filled up in 2015.

. 1.80 here.  Crude dropped like $5?  Cool,  that means we could see another 10 cent drop this week.  Happy days are here again!      Gas has now dropped from our second highest expense to our third.

$2.69 in CT :( And I don't even live near NYC...but I live in a high income second-ring suburb/rural-burb (is that a thing?) with only one gas station.  Luckily I haven't filled up in about a month, and I think it's below or around $2 in one of the bigger towns I have to go to tomorrow.

Holy shit Batman!   I just checked gas buddy.  The lowest price in Missouri (my state) is $1.55 at numerous stations.   OK hit $1.53.  This is getting a little crazy.

Quote from an article --

"Back in 2005, the US had to import 60 per cent of its supplies from abroad. By 2014, however, the USA only needs to import 30 per cent of its oil consumption. The oil revolution is paying off: too much oil is now on the market, causing prices to drop."

And new pickups and SUVs are now averaging over 25 mpg on the highway.  Wow,  seems like the USA will be energy independent way sooner than anyone is predicting?   I'm guessing that most of our imports are coming from Canada as well, so dependency on Oil Sheiks will no longer wag the dog.

I think we can definitely achieve energy independence indefinitely.  Of course oil won't stay cheap forever, but that's not the only source of energy

No idea how long the current pricing will last.  The dominos seemed to be lined up against any significant increase in the near term.   Doing my part to reduce usage.

Will $40 per barrel be in the picture soon?  What do you see in your crystal ball Arebelspy?

Historically cheap oil is more the rule than the recent decade of high prices.

From Feb of 1986 oil was $16 a barrel to Jan of 02 it was $18.  As recently as Dec 08 it was $30.
So one can easily imagine, given the US ramp up in production and world glut, that $48 a barrel for an extended period would not be unprecedented.   (I'm old enough to remember 19 cents a gallon for gas)

Bad for global climate change,  I know.

Another thing to consider is the impact oil has on all products.  Most products today have an energy input,  a transportation cost and many products are made from petroleum derived plastics.

It is possible that we will see an increase in real wages this year with near zero inflation or even deflation of many goods.  Oil prices are setting the stage for an interesting year.

We all paid a lot less than a couple of moths ago thanks to shale fracturing. I just wish the gov't would just get the Hell out of the way on this.

You seem to think this will last indefinitely.  I doubt that is the case.

You would think since we are not a part of OPEC and only getting about 30% from import the prices should have been more steady. Maybe it's because we've been exporting more too.

These ever-increasing earthquakes in my fracking-heavy area make me inclined to disagree. 10 years ago there were no earthquakes here.

What did you pay for gas this week?

When I got my licence in 2002, petrol was 85c a litre. Now it's about $1.10-1.15 (although the normal price over the last few years has been closer to $1.40).

A ~35% increase over twelve or thirteen years is probably below the general inflation rate, so in 2015 dollars fuel was probably more expensive back then.

Nowadays I'm making much more money than I was then, driving half as much and driving a car that uses maybe 30% less fuel.

Recently I've seen fuel for 110.9, and there's already talk of it going under a dollar a litre.

Interesting way to look at it :)

Tokyo gas price is currently around 131 yen/liter, or US $4.14/gallon. That's pretty damn low for recent times. Probably would be lower if the yen hadn't been weakening against the dollar recently as well.

I tend to fill up our car about once every three weeks, so the price doesn't matter to me too much. Although I still notice it.

After I first bought our car, I got annoyed at myself for getting an older model that didn't get near the fuel efficiency of later models. Then I multiplied out the distance we had driven in the previous couple years versus the cost of gas and found I had probably paid around $400 more for gas than if I had bought one of the newer models. A newer model would have cost quite a bit more than $400, so I stopped worrying about it.

Drive less, and it won't matter.

So several stations in st. Louis are at $1.59 today!   Barrel prices continue to slide.  I just read where $25 per is not out of the question in the near term.  We could be looking at sub $1 prices in 60 days.    Our local price has gone from 2.30 to 1.78 since I started this post 30 days ago.    Crazy,  just crazy.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
