What CC to get now??
« on: June 02, 2017, 03:35:11 PM »
DH just dropped to 4/24 so time to get him a new card.  I'm considering the following:

Amex SPG.  35,000 points for 5K spend w/i 6 months.  These can be turned into 50,000 airline miles.  SPG card will likely be going away at some point since the hotel chain has merged with Marriott.  Since Amex is "one and done", get it while it's available.

Southwest Airlines.  60,000 miles for 2K/3 months.  This the largest public bonus offering in memory and who can't use Southwest points!  Getting a companion pass isn't in the cards for him (for a variety of reasons) so don't consider that possibility.

Citi Hilton.  40,000 points for 1K/3 months.  Hilton is leaving Citi next year leaving only Amex cards for the future.  Not a great public offering so this probably isn't the one.

Barclay Aviator Red card.  50,000 AA points with 1st purchase.

All the spends are possible.  I don't want to get him above 5/24 so that we have access to Chase cards every few months.  I'm familiar with all the 5/24, one and done, 24 month rules, etc.  We just got back from a mostly free European vacation and I'm not sure what our next trip will be.  But all these points would be useable.  I know that there are many more cards, some of which he already has or has had within the past 2 years.

Anyone have opinions on which of these is the best selection?  Anyone have a referral link which is a good or better than the public offers on these cards?

The 5/24 rule from Chase has nothing do with other banks. It's only applicable to Chase branded cards.

Yes I understand how 5/24 works as well as the limitations of Amex and Citi.

I recently got a Freedom Unlimited card, which works well with the Sapphire Reserve.

I'd grab the Ink Preferred if you don't mind picking up a business card with a not-so-legit business (that's what I did with no problems).  80k UR points and since it's a business card it won't count against 5/24 keeping him at 4.

I love my Southwest card.  I don't think many people realize how great the deals can be when redeeming your points, especially if you're willing to fly early or late in the day.

I recently traveled Chicago-Vegas roundtrip for 13,000 points.  And, for those of us who travel for work, the points add up very fast when flying SW and booking hotel rooms through their website.

I basically never pay for personal airfare for my family anymore.

Nope, you were right, which is why I deleted my post. I learned something new. Didn't know Chase considered new issues by other banks to count towards the 5/24.

The Southwest card is by far the best deal right now. 60k points is worth about $1k in flights. The 35K SPG deal is currently dead to the public unless you have a targeted offer.

Chase Marriott? Drop below 5/24 again and DH can then get the business Marriott and you're within reach of one of their packages.

I've decided on the Southwest card with it's current record setting 60,000 point bonus.  If anyone has a referral code to earn them a few points let me know by Monday.

For those interested in the logic:

*Aviation Red card's 50,000 point offer will surface again.
*Citi Hilton offer ultimately isn't that great.  (If they up offer before the card goes away, I'll likely get it for him.)
*SPG is really tempting, however, I'm finishing the spend on this myself right now. I then plan to use it for my non-bonus spend for awhile.  However, as an AMEX many places don't take it so I don't want both of us to have it at the same time.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
