What's your natural gas bill like this month?
« on: January 14, 2017, 07:18:00 PM »
Just opened my natural gas bill for 12/2 - 1/5. Last month (11/1 - 12/1) it was $59.75. I thought that was pretty high, so we tightened our belts and really tried to cut our usage for this next bill. As you can imagine, I just about crapped my pants when I opened it this evening and the bill was $99.08!
Last billing cycle we used right around 60 therms, this cycle was 106. Yeowch. Our rate is 35 cents/therm up to 82 therms, 54 cents/therm after that.

I'm not sure what normal usage is because we have never had natural gas before.

We live in a 975 sq ft apartment that was built in the 90s, remodeled less than a year ago (superficial only, I think. The walls seem to be pretty thin - if I touch an exterior wall it feels ice cold, no matter the temperature inside. So there's nothing we can do to improve the efficiency of our unit (huge management company won't do anything either as they're not the ones paying the heating bills). We have gas heat, cooking, and hot water. The water heater is located in a utility closet on our patio, so I'm sure that's just about as inefficient as it can get. The water temp was also set really high until just a few days ago when we had them adjust it. This could be a factor in our high bill.

During this last billing cycle, we also all got hit with norovirus. The 1.5 year old refused to puke into a bowl, opting instead for clothing, bedding, couch cushions, etc. Family who live close have a newborn, so we didn't want to take any chances of spreading it. We washed everything that could have possibly been contaminated. I know this greatly increased our hot water usage for about a week as we cycled through all that laundry.

Things we are doing to reduce our consumption:
Lower water heater temp, like I said. This was also a safety concern for our 1.5 year old I checked the temp of the hot water as it was filling my washer once and it was 150!!! Haven't checked it since lowering though.
Reduce hot water consumption - turning water off while I am in the shower and soaping up, trying to do fewer loads of laundry and dishwasher cycles, no running water while hand washing dishes, etc
Lowered thermostat from 72 to 68 degrees, we turn off heat at night or set it to 55 - we actually started doing this at the beginning of last billing cycle so I thought we would save money this time around. Nope. Lowering the thermostat more would take us into the territory of misery, as I have been tempted quite a few times to turn it up just as it is.
Making sure we don't leave the oven to preheat for too long, not leaving water to boil more than necessary. This is probably small change, and any gas spent on cooking food for ourselves is still saving us money over buying prepared food (although we never buy prepared food anyway).

It has cycled between extremely cold and not that bad at all. I think the average temp for the last billing cycle was just below 40. We live in northern Virginia, for context.

So how are we doing on our heating costs? Aside from the things we have already done, what else can we do to cut costs? This bill is twice as much as I was hoping it would be!

Get a fire rated water heater blanket. Install properly so as not to block venting or intake.

We have 2700 squ feet, Family of 6 and ours averages around 150 a month usually a tad less. All utilites water, electic and gas are under 400$ a month usually around 350$ and we live in the Arctic midwest!

My natural gas bill has jumped to $70/month for a smaller 3 bedroom house in NE Ohio. It was about $40/month last year, but we had a cheaper rate locked in and that contract ran out. I'm hoping I'll get a better offer from someone (we pick our own supplier) but natural gas rates are higher this year than last.

We also use gas for heating, water, and the stove, but I can tell from our usage that it's mostly the furnace.

We used 56 therms in November, with an average temp of 45 (last month was 105 therms and 25 degrees average, but we were also gone for 5 days). There's 2 of us in a 1000 sq ft old drafty house. We keep it at 60 during the day (sometimes bump it up to 64 if I'm home), 66 in the mornings and evenings when we're home, and 63 at night.

I think you're right that cooking is a small portion of the bill.  Before we had a gas water heater, we'd have bills in the summer where we only used 0 or 1 therm, even though our cooking is gas.

In terms of the water heater, in November, the average temp was almost exactly the same as last year, before we had the gas water heater, and the difference in use was about 15 therms.  So it's not insignificant, but the biggest gas user is definitely heating.  Anything you can do to make the place more efficient will help.  Can you tape the windows and/or hang up heavy insulating curtains?  Do you get a lot of sun that could help heat the place up?  We have a lot of work to do efficiency-wise I think, so I'm probably not the best source on that topic!

We live a bit south of you in central NC.  Ours went up as well - it was colder.  Does your utility have a website that shows average temp vs. usage?  Our company has this sort of thing, and as you can see if you click on the link, the average temp was down, and usage was up.

Screen shot

That's not to say you shouldn't do what you can to reduce your usage, but it does help explain why usage is up.

Get some clear window insulation kits and seal up all of your windows.  The thinnest walls are still much better insulators than windows.

Zero!

Don't ask about my electric bill...  $230 last month.  I have a purely electric house, a reasonably deep well, and it was damned cold out (such that the heat pump couldn't keep up and the backup coils were being used, which is about $1/hr in power).  Plus, we cloth diaper, so a good bit of washing/drying from that.

When I've had gas heating, $70-$150/mo is normal in the winter for heating.  I've lived in poorly insulated places but didn't pay for gas there - couldn't have been cheap, though.  The furnace was running almost constantly some of the winter.

I don't keep it extremely cold (my wife runs cold and quite honestly, it's worth the $20-$30/mo we'd save to avoid her freezing all winter), but it's not blisteringly hot either.  Usually 68 during the day, 62 at night (though sometimes the thermostat keeps it a bit warmer to avoid having to burn the coils as much in the morning).

If you had a $400/mo gas bill, I'd say it was worth figuring it out, but since you don't own your place and you observe the walls are cold, there's not a huge amount you can do.

Last month, we used 47 Therms. Central PA, with average temperatures in the 30s-40s day and 20s-30s overnight. We're in a 1,600 sq.ft. townhouse with a finished (but unheated) basement. Not an end unit.

Total bill was $51 and change. We were gone for the last week of the month, and had the house set to 54 while we were out, so I bet it would have been closer to $65 or so.

We also have gas everything - heat, hot water, stove, and dryer.

For reference, our electric bill was ~$47 for the month. Would be lower if not for the 18 year old fridge that our landlord doesn't want to replace.

I don't recommend those. I am still cleaning gunk off the sill from the kit I installed 2 years prior. They do save a bit of money though (I calculated about 20$ for an average sized window over winter) but I think I spent 8 hours installing, removing and then cleaning the 5 windows I treated. My return was pretty poor considering this.

We paid $36.72 for December. There were about three or four days we weren't home. We have a ~1800 sq ft house with gas heat, water, stove, oven, and fireplace. Our rate is $0.4468/CCF. It will be interesting to see if January is higher.

It seems like natural gas is a whole lot less expensive than oil.

Can anyone estimate my bill on a 900 sq ft apartment. Northeast cold winters. Not monthly over the whole year, just the winter months?

+1 on the insulation on water heater and plastic over windows.  Can also insulate the pipe that carries the hot water out of the heater for a few bucks from home depot.  It's like a Styrofoam sleeve that surrounds the pipe.

With the exception of decontaminating after norovirus (so sorry to hear that ugh) you can do laundry in cold water.  Everything gets just as clean and clothes seem to fade less.  I paid about $450 for natural gas in 2016: heat, hot water heater and gas stove.  Had a frigid winter here in Michigan if I remember correctly.

What kind of information should I be providing?

Heating costs depend heavily on the architecture and insulation, the variety of heater in use, and the habits of occupants.

Diapers was a response to being able to do laundry in cold water.

The building was built in 1918. It's a brick building and had thermopane windows installed in the past 2 years. Natural gas furnace is in use, I'm occupying the apartment. 63-64 degrees at most.

This should oughta make someone feel better. The natural gas portion of our utility bill ending 1/10/17 is $277.53. Last month our furnace was out and we froze our asses. This month we basked in 65-68 degree luxury. We averaged 5.24 therms/day. Four adults, 2627 sf, ten year old home, relatively energy efficient.

BTW, there's a bubble wrap hack to improve window insulation. You Tube is your friend. Use the clearest stuff you can find with the tiniest bubbles. This video's good.

First, gather up your bills for the year. Second, isolate the months, like May-September, where you weren't running the furnace. This is your hot water cost, reduce it as you see fit by reducing the usage of hot water, lowering the temperature, insulating pipes etc.

After that exercise is done then you can look at your heating costs. After subtracting the average hot water cost, the monthly hook up then you get your heat cost. How much is it per year? If its $200/year then spending $5000 on new windows is silly, if its $2000 then maybe new windows isn't a bad idea. Unfortunately most of the tips/tricks to reduce the cost will never pay off for you. If its about frugality then you might be better off accepting things as they are, this is a rental and not your permanent address.

Too often people confuse the hot water cost, in my case $7/month, with heat costs. Trying to reduce hot water costs by 10% is tough, that's an annual savings of $8.40 which doesn't leave much money on the table for expensive hacks, just inexpensive tricks. My best trick is to install low flow shower heads.

How much do the rest of you spend on hot water/month? I bet most people spend more on the hookup fees than the gas itself.

Also in AZ.  We have gas everything, 2000sqft house.  $39 (over $20 in service fees).  Electric was $75.  I wonder how much of this was Christmas lights?

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
