What's your IQ According to this online test?
« on: March 04, 2014, 01:23:41 AM »
OK people, it's time.  Are we smart here or what?  I based the ranges off of Wikipedia's description for the Stanford-Binet scale.  Honestly, I have no idea which scale applies to me.  I took the test in 2nd grade and rely on my parents to tell me the result.  But what they tell me roughly correlates with what you would expect from conversions from SAT and LSAT scores.  We're talking two standard deviations here.

Here are some resources:

http://www.iqcomparisonsite.com/GREIQ.aspx

Edit: Use the score from the following test.  You can also use the result from another test if you like.

Every time I do a random internet one that my friends send me I generally return the maximum result (130-140). Not really a surprise, I've always been a spatial, patterns, numerically minded person.

I haven't ever done one that is uncapped and tests beyond those numbers. So I don't know for sure what mine would be.

FWIW if it was an EQ test chances are I'd score really low :)

My understanding is that after the 140 range the "significance" goes way down.  In other words, a mere test can only tell you so much... and as you alluded to by mentioning EQ, it may not make sense to classify extremely specialized intelligence.  I'm sure there are savants out there who are extremely skilled in spatial reasoning but couldn't carry a conversation with another human.  Does their IQ really mean anything?

Dragoncar, I used to have trouble relating to people on a social level (As a kid, I couldn't deal with people who were slow to catch onto what I was talking about, for example) but through a lot of effort, I figured it out in my 20's.  I've scored anywhere from the mid 140's to the mid 160's, depending exactly on the test used.

I don't have boatloads of friends, but I can relate very easily now to people, and I'm a desired work partner professionally as well.  I think part of the issue with people of higher intelligence (at least from my perspective) is the level of pressure I put on myself, for both perfection, and for 'success', which gave me anxiety issues, until I learned appropriate coping mechanisms.

I have taken the test 3 or times and it was always 137-142 ish so pretty right on. But i never put much into the IQ test.  But as Dragoncar mentioned the one trait I always had was having to be a perfectionist.

I don't put any stock in IQ tests personally.  They tend to be used predominantly for ego stroking.  I'm smart enough to have a job and be saving for retirement.

Just thought I'd mention: IQ tests should be taken with a live (and qualified) proctor present, and the type of IQ test you take should be determined by that proctor. I wouldn't put much stock in random online IQ tests.

The result was 141 on the second test, but I don't it is trustworthy. In my opinion it is probably too high. Last time I did (an unofficial, but not online) test, it was 115. That seems closer to me, but is more than 5 years ago.

This.  An online test is meaningless.  And as someone with a Mensa+ IQ (as tested by a trained professional!), you can take my word on that.  ;)

Hey, I wouldn't be surprised if that's true. As a very small subset of the population (and one that is interested in personal finance), it's certainly possible that most everyone here is above average.

I have never taken an IQ test, but based on my SAT score of 1490, I have found charts that estimate it at 135 to 145. Honestly I think that's a little high though. I would guess somewhere in the 125 to 135 range. I'll have to take a test someday.

Ummmm, who cares?

Seriously, what matters, IMHO, is what someone does with their intelligence, creativity, etc, not the label of a number.   IME, the people who bring up and/or discuss "IQ" are insecure and looking for external validation (which they really aren't going to find).  I also think thinking too much about such a number is limiting.   If one's number is higher than what they feel like they've achieved, it can breed bitterness (see how smart I am, why do all these people who are not as smart have more?), and if it's lower, it can similarly be depressing.

We should not waste any mental energy pondering such nonsense and instead put it into actually doing something with our lives.   IMVHO, of course.

Agree with everything here.   I'd much rather hang out with people who aren't brilliant who share my values than insufferably brilliant people who don't.   I also question what IQ really measures -- I've seen some studies that show that people who measure well taking IQ tests are simply good at working through tests, i.e. they've mastered this skill.   Example:  I took the SAT twice, and between runs I did hours of practice SAT tests.  My score went up 240 points between the two official takes.  Does that make me smart?  No.  It actually just proves how versatile all humans are:  Most of us can learn to do a wide variety of things, given time, effort, motivation etc.

Pass on this.

My mother told me that all three of my brothers have genius-level IQ's, but she was kind enough to tell me that I am not genius-level. My grades in school were always top-notch, and I scored very highly on standardized tests, but I guess for all that, I was still not bright  enough to be a genius like everybody else.. Anyway, I graduated from college with a practical degree (nursing), and no debt. I picked up an MPA later: related to my job at the time; no debt. I'm an Air Force veteran. I worked as a nurse for 42 years while writing for publication on the side, maintaining decent long-term friendships with people I've known since third-grade, and decent family relationships with a huge extended clan. True, I've been married twice, but the marriages were 20 years each. (Still married to second husband.) I don't believe in divorce, but had no choice but to end the first marriage. This is probably TMI, but being a genius is nice…but being grounded, stable, healthy, happy, and having a lot of street smarts is golden, too.

Since this thread was clearly intended to be a place where individuals who are simultaneously vainglorious and insecure can overzealously boast about themselves, I could not resist getting swept up in the collective masturbatory ego-stroking.  This is like my home away from home.

Like everyone else in this thread thus far, I am also awesome.  In addition being the smartest person you are likely to ever meet, I am a black belt, a PhD, and an eagle scout.  And very tall.  And charming and handsome.  Most people remark openly about my clever tongue, and sometimes about how much they appreciate my unpretentious humility and modesty.

Internet "IQ tests" usually give me about 160-170, which proves they are at least consistently useless. (I voted "don't know" because I have never taken, and intend never to take, a "proper" test.)

IQ tests primarily measure how good you are at IQ tests, and like everything else, practice and experience are big factors. The people who do best on "proper" IQ tests are those who study for, and take, many IQ tests. Therefore I don't think IQ tests measure anything innate. I also don't think they measure anything objectively important.

As an aside, everyone seems to report the highest score they ever got, especially those who are smart enough to know that they should be using the mean.

I voted. As others said though, I don't trust typical IQ tests much, much less the online 10 minute ones.

As with others here, I believe I'm above average, but I'm certainly not the smartest person I've ever met ;-)

I always report the latest score. I scored highest in middle school, lowest sophomore year (there may or may not have been drugs involved :-)), and the ones I've taken since then haven't shifted much, but do kind of wind up being a touch higher than the median.

How would someone know their IQ, unless they had to be tested in school?  I certainly don't know mine, and I don't really know why I would.  I was in all the advanced classes in school, but I think that was really just because I liked school.

I'm fascinated that so many of you actually know your full scale IQ.

If you have a legitimate reason to exclude a particular result from your mean calculation, OK. But if you only use the latest one, you might have just kept taking tests until you got a particularly high result. I'll trust that you aren't doing that, I suppose.

My mom's job involves giving tests for all sorts of things, one of them being IQ tests. She used to try all her tests on me so I've taken a TON of them. I thought they were super fun games. She always refused to tell my brother and I what our IQ numbers were exactly, she just told us a range that we apparently both fell in.

My partner did one at uni as a volunteer for training psychology students (and because he wanted to impress the pretty girl who asked him to take the test). He scored at 160 and has been dubious about IQ tests ever since.

IQ tests are a pretty lousy measure of anything really.

Yeah, I do that with my own kids ( I'm a speech pathologist) with various tests sometimes, but I generally don't feel like doing even more testing when I get home from work. it's just interesting that so many people seem to know their number.

I believe the correlation between SAT scores and IQ is fairly loose.  I think anyone with an IQ over about 130 is capable of acing the SAT, and I know a few people with IQs over 160 and good grades who barely cracked 1000.

I don't believe there is much correlation between high intelligence and social awkwardness.  The vast majority of highly intelligent people I have met have been at least socially normal, if not charismatic.  Yet if you listen to anecdotal evidence, you'd think all geniuses were socially inept, lacked conversation skills, had no "street smarts" and may not have been able to dress themselves.

Who cares indeed?  It's more useful to waste mental energy questioning the current waste of mental energy in this thread.  Meta-waste.

Seriously people, it's just for funsies.  Maybe not as fun as "passport book vs passport card" or "what are you eating right now," but interesting nonetheless.

edit: By the way, that second link was just a completely random google search result.  I've never taken that one so let me know if it sucks donkey balls like those folks at Everest Wealth Management.

Yeah I think it's only really viewed as being applicable before 1997 or somewhere around there. Honestly, I think even somebody of average IQ could be capable of acing the SAT, as it's all learned knowledge. (although I don' t know what the deal is with them today with the essays and whatnot).

As far as the social awkwardness thing, I think its more about the difference between the people interacting than it is about the absolute intelligence level.  I have read somewhere that at two standard deviations in intelligence effective communication is almost impossible, in either direction lol. I don't know if that's true or not, but it sure feels like it sometimes.

Please don't add an "I don't care" option.  I personally don't care whether anyone here cares.  We don't even need an "I don't know" option because if you don't know or don't care you can just, wait for it, not respond.  There is no magical force making you click on links discussing subject matter you don't care about.

IMO those who scorn measures of intelligence are a bit butt hurt.  I'm nowhere near the top end of the IQ scale but I don't deny Steven hawking his 200 or bill gates his 160 just because I don't like the test.

Hm, I just converted my GRE score to IQ and it comes out around 134, so maybe that previous test was correct.

reminds me of a quote from one of my favorite films

"Years ago my mother used to say to me, she'd say, 'In this world, Elwood, you must be' - she always called me Elwood - 'In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant.' Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. You may quote me."

I don't think being 5'1 is something we normally count as an "ability", whether or not it's innate.

Hey, dragoncar.  I will admit that I enjoyed the jokes on this thread, as I always enjoy yours. :) I think a lot of the members on this forum have been in a bit of a joshing mood the last couple of days.  I know I have.

I can see why it's puzzling to think of this poll as being any different than, say, comparing salaries, networth, etc.  I think that serpentstooth made a good point in saying that IQ is something that's genetic, something we can't really change.  Salary, level of education, wealth accumulation--these are things we can.  Perhaps it's scary for us to compare something that we don't have a lot of control over.

I didn't take the IQ test.  I do feel kind of uncomfortable about comparing this. I also overanalyze everything; my IQ number wouldn't be an exception.  So, I am sure that I'm not being logical, but just wanted to share that with you.

Well, it looks like I'm back to my serious self. :P

Good point... sorry if I misinterpreted them jokes!

I'd like to hear from the "below average" votes -- are they real?  I'm guessing this comment is a joke:

My IQ is probably around the 60ish level. I do what I can with it though. I managed to feed myself yesterday. Took a shower too!

Also, for everyone who feels badly. IQ is strongly correlated with income.

It's poorly correlated with wealth, which is what we all really care about here.

http://thesocietypages.org/socimages/2008/02/06/correlations-of-iq-with-income-and-wealth/

The income thread was what led me to start thinking about IQ.  I'm personally not surprised that people on here have relatively high IQs.

To those people who are disregarding scores of 130... why?  Do you not feel smart?

What I'd really like is to take one of these tests with one of those "crazy frickin smart" people so they can EXPLAIN what is going on in some of the questions.  Some of them seem so obvious to me and others I'm scratching my head trying to figure out what the heck I'm supposed to do.  Would be really interesting to see the answer.

I don't understand what all the fuss is about. We're all numbers people, and this is another number. I like the poll, and the possible correlation of high IQ with high wealth accumulation, or at the very least high IQ with interest in this website/lifestyle.

FWIW, all the online quiz's I've taken put me in the 130-145 range. I have no frame of reference to say whether they are accurate or not. I took a live IQ test once when I was around 12 but had no insight on the result.

This thread makes me think of the Seinfeld episode where George cheats on his IQ test. I think that one clearly fits SOL's description. If you've ever somehow cheated on an IQ test, you might have some ego issues.

I voted for 145-160. I've only ever taken internet IQ tests, but typically score 140+ depending on how high they go*. And my GRE score was 1490, which translates into that region too. I literally had people describe me as "crazy-frickin' smart" in high school, but they were probably exaggerating.

Like many others here, I consider it to be in large part a result of good test-taking skills. I think there are many components to intelligence and the ones that IQ tests measure are ones that I'm particularly good at.

*except that one test that went on forever, and finally emailed you a score after you quit the website based on how long it took you to realize that it went on forever and give up. I scored really low on that one...

I'm pretty certain my husband is substantially more intelligent than I am. This bugs me as much as the fact that he's taller and stronger than I am, which is to say, not a whit.

I think my husband is smarter than I am.  He has said that he thinks I am smarter.

I suppose it's good that in our own minds, anyway, we both married "up."

;)

On a serious note, I did read once about the notion of multiple intelligences. (Sorry, I can't remember the name of the source...) IQ measures a couple common types of intelligence (verbal, spacial) but it ignores others, like creative intelligence, emotional intelligence, and so on.

Basically IQ is just one yardstick, and probably not the most meaningful one.

It's all the company you keep.  I remember trying to help my HS girlfriend with her algebra homework and (I don't mean this in a derogatory way) it was like trying to explain to a monkey.  I just couldn't even articulate why the next step was what it was, because it was obvious to me.  That's a social failing on my part but taught me that some people just don't "get" things in the way that I do.  Of course, she was not stupid by any stretch of the imagination and is now a successful lawyer.

On the other hand, when I got to college, I was sometimes on the other end of that.  When I started getting into signal processing (lots of manipulation of imaginary numbers) I just couldn't visualize it anymore.  I got by, but it required work.  Some people have an intuition for certain cognitive processing tasks and some don't.

For sure.

I don't know what my IQ and I don't really care.  When my son was tested, we found out that his IQ equivalent was the 30th percentile which puts him around 90.

He is not "below average."  He is not even "low average."  He is "average."  Average is 80-120 and low and high average are slightly below and above.

He is being raised by a mother who is teaching him frugality, so I fully expect that he will be okay financially.

He does say, "I feel bad for MMM's son.  He doesn't have xbox, does he?"  I explained that he has better than that, that he's much younger than my son, and for all I know he might have an xbox.  Other than that, he is fully on board with the MMM life.

I might be offended if someone I didn't know well enough (as much as you can know someone whose posts you read on a message board) not to be a douche had posted this poll, but I think you are a good guy, Dragoncar.

I also think that this poll discussion would have been different on ERE where things are less emotional much of the time.

I've never had an IQ test and I'm not paying for one either! People tell me I'm smart, but that's pretty subjective, some stuff I understand right away, some of the investing information (for example) I have to go through multiple times to understand. My kid is gifted, and I've always told her that's meaningless if she's not willing to work hard. Personally I think hard work and a good attitude take you further than IQ.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
