What's with all the duplicate avatars?
« on: March 12, 2015, 08:01:05 AM »
I see a lot of people using identical avatars.  One looks like kurt cobain, one looks like bruce willis with sunglasses, and one is bob marley.   There are probably others I am not recalling right now.  Is it just coincidence that they all picked identical avatars?  What's up with that?

The site gives you limited default avatar choices, I guess folks don't want to go through the trouble of uploading their own.

I didn't realize it had default options.  I just googled for the biggest most ridiculous mustache I could find and uploaded it as my avatar.  Are the ones I mentioned in the default avatar options?

Yep, your options are musicians and actors.

Profile --> modify Profile --> choose avatar from gallery --> Actors/Musicians.

ha, after seeing at least my 3rd Bruce Willis a few minutes ago, I finally said "WTF, this can't just be a coincidence of huge Bruce Willis fans!" So I checked my own profile settings and discovered the pre-loaded set of actors and musicians that explained it. Then before whining about it, I figured I'd do a search to see if there was another thread whining about it, and, lo-and-behold, here is a thread about it (and seemingly the only one in the whole forum)...and it was posted less than 12 hours ago!

Why did two different people suddenly care about this issue on the same day? All I can figure is there has somehow been a big influx of duplicate-avatar users recently that made us finally notice.

Anyway, why do I want to whine about it? Because it's confusing as all hell! In mind, curmudgeonly wacko "Bob W" is the original "Bruce Willis", so now whenever I see someone else using that avatar, I assume that they're a curmudgeonly wacko. I get all the Bob Marley's confused with each other. I thought a recent "Cameron Diaz" was a secretly-returning anti-mustachian nutter from the early days of the forum!

I think avatars are super-useful for instantly recalling a poster's history/personality in your mind, and I wish more people would use them.

But only if they're unique! It makes no sense to me that the board would provide this pre-loaded set of avatars. The picture->person recall that happens is just too powerful so this linking of one picture to multiple people is seriously uncool!

When I read the Bogleheads board, I essentially click on a thread and scroll down until I see nisiprius's orange butterfly (because whatever nisiprius has to say is 100x more valuable than what anyone else has to say). Seeing another orange butterfly would seriously piss me off. Same when looking for MMM's comments on his blog posts.

Consider this my official request to get rid of the default avatars! (I suppose the existing holders can be grandfathered in if they want to be).

Yes! And thirdly, if they don't change!

I'm not bad with names but sometimes I mix up names that start with the same letter and have roughly the same length. Grid, Gimp, Beri01, Beltim, even Kriegsspiel and kbbmustang before kbb became a mod and got different colored thingies. moneycat and cpacat is another pair and moneycat doesn't use an avatar and then cpacat started changing theirs so I kept thinking "that other _____cat one" had just gotten around to getting an avatar, but no.

So, to all of you who have picked an avatar and stuck with it, I appreciate you.

Huh, I never knew that was Bruce Willis until now.

Who's this guy then?  There are way more people that choose this one:

Edit -- oh, is it Freddy Mercury?

Yep, Freddy Mercury. I'm happy to say I knew that one on my own; it might have been a Google reverse image search that tipped me off to Bruce Willis. I definitely did a reverse image search for Cameron Diaz, since that photo looks nothing like her. And up 'til I looked at the list, I thought that TomTX's avatar was himself, but nope, that's the Highlander, Christopher Lambert!  Shockingly I haven't seen anyone take Freddy Prinze Jr. yet!

Up 'til now I held out about 30% hope that sol's avatar was himself, but, sadly that's not true. He apparently has an even scarier brother though...

Edit: I love how every single person posting in this thread has an avatar (and all non-default ones, at that!)

I initially used a picture of my own face,  but I was sporting an Amish beard at the time (NO MOUSTACHE!!!!!)  which seemed totally inappropriate, so I also searched the internet for a hopefully random stache picture, and voila!

Here's the backstory behind the dour mug we all recognize as sol.

Wish I could say my ameba had some deeper significance, but I sure would be pissed off if other single-celled organism avatars started flooding the boards.

I also had trouble with all the same avatars when I first came to this site but I use the Bruce Willis'? Willises? Williesi's? Willies? as a gage to this forum. If all the Bruce's agree on a topic they must be right!

I also like people who use avatars as it does make it easier even if I get confused. Hawkeye strikes me as a lean mean military guy but uses Gwen Steffani as his (maybe her) avatar. Someone else, a female, used Brad Pitt for awhile (there are a few of them around and whatever the Brad Pitts say I will do)! In any case it helps to keep posters straight  in my head.  I think Arebelspy is the only person who uses a real image of themselves here.

I love Bruce Willis, he is a sexy guy. My gay friend and I both like him.

On this board is an old Bruce Willis and a younger one. The "old" one is roundabout my age, but younger. It is very confusing to have both of them around.  :)

You definitely didn't.  I remember when you joined and started posting thinking that you were another poster who had that avatar. You quickly, erm.. distinguished yourself though.

There's a few posters who do that though. I believe grant's is him. And I'm pretty sure I.P. is a large blue super her.

Thanks brooklynguy for the link of sol's avatar explanation. It was quite off-putting to meet him and not have him look like that. Though at the time he had switched for a few weeks to another avatar. I wonder what the story is on that one.

I honestly didn't even realize there were duplicates. I thought those were all the same person. I guess I don't really read names, just look at pictures. :)

Just:
Angry Baby
Missouri Bruce Willis

And Are Belspy (the B is silent).

Well, y'all inspired me to add an avatar!  I too get confused by the duplicates although most of the regular posters can be identified by their advice and writing style.  Sometimes I'm reading along and think 'huh? that doesn't sound like so-n-so,' glance at the name below the avatar and oh its not!

I'm glad i'm not the only one that associates the avatar with the member and gets confused.  I pretty much echo everyone's thoughts in this thread.  I noticed it awhile ago though, and just brushed it off as a curiosity, but it's been bugging me more and more.

If they're memorable enough.

I'd definitely rather have someone use no avatar, so I have to glance at their username, than a generic avatar that multiple people use.  A unique avatar is best though, IMO.

Yeah, the default avatar's confuse me.

For me, Bruce Willis IS Bob W!

I picked my user name first and then did a google search on the name. I was shocked to find an image I could use.

This is the story of how I got my user name http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/welcome-to-the-forum/what's-in-a-name-username-meaning-discussion-thread/msg340390/#msg340390

I was also inspired by this thread to add an avatar. This is my velcro dog, Katy. She is counting down to FIRE so she can permanently attach herself to us.

I also found the duplicate avatars to be confusing, but I never knew there were default options. I just thought people were REALLY into Bruce Willis and Kurt Cobain. Freddy Mercury made sense to me. I mean, at least he's got a mustache in his pic!

I thought that too, but five people all choosing the *exact* same bruce willis picture as their avatar?  Those odds are astronomical.

relevant Simpsons quote as Mr. Burns gloats that there's no way he could lose his bet on the baseball game with 9 ringers:

Quote from: Mr. Burns
Unless, of course, my nine all-stars fall victim to nine separate
misfortunes and are unable to play tomorrow.  But that will never happen.
Three misfortunes, that's possible.  Seven misfortunates, there's an
outside chance.  But nine misfortunes?  I'd like to see that!'

Dude, that explains it. I thought people were changing their usernames too. Now I feel silly.

OK I'm convinced.   Seems some people have an impression of me based on the character I play on this site so  I will gladly change my Bruce Willis avatar if someone can suggest an appropriate one?

Although, I always though Bruce was pretty appropriate for me due to our similar age, lack or hair, general good looks and reluctance to follow the herd.

I've given myself an avatar now.  Babushka dog would like to say hello, and tell you to put on a sweater because you might catch a chill.

Or Yosemite Sam.

One of these, for example, seems "Bob W" to me:

Actually, this should be a whole fun new thread.. a user asks others who should be their avatar, and everyone picks who they think represents that poster in their mind.
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.
If you want to know more about me, this Business Insider profile tells the story pretty well.

I find this thread strangely compelling. Probably mainly for the practical reason many people stated above, that I use avatar as a proxy for username and get thrown for a loop when multiple people use the same avatar. I never considered using a default avatar and it never occurred to me other people do...
