This thread inspired me to add an avatar. Do I look old and sage now?

I think I'm the exact opposite of everyone on this thread. Until just now, when I added my own avatar, I had all avatars turned off. I have never seen ANY of your avatars! I think it's because I want to know you by the content of your writing, instead of some photo that could be anyone or anything. Bob W looks like Bruce Willis? That's not at all how I pictured him!

ha, after seeing at least my 3rd Bruce Willis a few minutes ago, I finally said "WTF, this can't just be a coincidence of huge Bruce Willis fans!" So I checked my own profile
I think avatars are super-useful for instantly recalling a poster's history/personality in your mind, and I wish more people would use them.

But only if they're unique!

Yes! And thirdly, if they don't change!

I'm not bad with names but sometimes I mix up names that start with the same letter and have roughly the same length. Grid, Gimp, Beric01, Beltim, even Kriegsspiel and kbbmustang before kbb became a mod and got different colored thingies. moneycat and cpacat is another pair and moneycat doesn't use an avatar and then cpacat started changing theirs so I kept thinking "that other _____cat one" had just gotten around to getting an avatar, but no.

So, to all of you who have picked an avatar and stuck with it, I appreciate you.

I have neglected to add an avatar because I saw it mentioned that they take up extra space.  I'll try and make one over the weekend if I don't find the right fit through image search.

Edit:  done!  Mashed a couple pics together.

Or Yosemite Sam.

One of these, for example, seems "Bob W" to me:

Actually, this should be a whole fun new thread.. a user asks others who should be their avatar, and everyone picks who they think represents that poster in their mind.
excellent choices Eric and arebelspy!   I can feel the love and will put those under consideration.

Here's the backstory behind the dour mug we all recognize as sol.

My mug is not dour.  My avatar just had a bad day when the photographer showed up.

Thanks brooklynguy for the link of sol's avatar explanation. It was quite off-putting to meet him and not have him look like that.

Really?  You were upset my face wasn't weirdly misshapen?

I'm a fairly normal looking 38 year old white dude with a wife and three kids.  I don't think my real appearance is in any way unusual or memorable.

I was also inspired by this thread to add an avatar. This is my velcro dog, Katy. She is counting down to FIRE so she can permanently attach herself to us.

I also found the duplicate avatars to be confusing, but I never knew there were default options. I just thought people were REALLY into Bruce Willis and Kurt Cobain. Freddy Mercury made sense to me. I mean, at least he's got a mustache in his pic!

I will be FIRE in 3 weeks and my bulldog, also a velcro dog, will be overjoyed that Mommers is home with him most all the time.

I agree - unique they're super useful.
... except Sol's just scares the crap out of me & spork grosses me out.  makes me wonder what they look like in RL.

Agreed.  Sometimes you look a an avatar and just hope the person behind is is getting the help they need.
oh yeah... forgot to add YOUR avatar to the list Mr. Tummy... wtf?  Who is that anyway??  Likes like a roady on a speed-trip.

The philosophical questions would be quite different posed by an avatar like this:
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.

Ha! Good point though. I wonder how much effect an avatar would have on how other's attach certain implications to your posts.

I'd guess a not insignificant amount.

felt their posts would have taken on a different meaning if the reader knew their gender. I suppose the same could be said of age or other things.

Yes, rebs was visibly upset when we met up for dinner and I turned out to be a goofy looking 12 year old boy.  I rather enjoyed that reaction, actually.

I ended up assuming it was your (really sketchy) self-portrait until this thread.  It does tend to give your critiques a more serious tone.

While this thread seems to have moved on to everyone sharing their new unique avatars, I wanted to add something to the earlier discussion about confusion between people with similar ones. I too found myself getting people confused when just using the avatars, and then it was pointed out that you can turn avatars off, as well as the signature lines, and do several other modifications to the look and layout of the board. If you are logged in, click on Profile up above, then choose Account Settings from the drop down list. Then click on Modify Profile on the new screen, and then choose Look and Layout from the drop down screen. I long ago turns off avatars and signatures, and I changed the time offset so that post times read in my time zone. There are probably other cool ways to modify your experience of the boards, but I found those 3 changes made reading the board much easier and enjoyable.

I'd definitely rather have someone use no avatar, so I have to glance at their username, than a generic avatar that multiple people use.  A unique avatar is best though, IMO.

So the whole reason you were recently cloaked in your red adminstratory color is that so you could disable the generic-avatar "feature", right? Right? As I've heard no votes in dissent of the proposal during the mandatory 5-day public-commentary period, by the laws I just made up, you are free to act! Act now before the Bruce Willis army becomes to big to quash!

(seriously, I'd imagine there might be some way to just prevent the "choose avatar from gallery" choice from being shown on the "modify profile" page, which would allow everyone to keep their current avatar, but prevent new users from using choosing one from that gallery?)

Heh, I was wondering how long it would take for someone to notice/comment on that.  The admin thing was for two unrelated reasons actually.  That's not a bad idea though, I did find where to turn it off.

Can anyone think of a reason why we should leave the default avatars enabled for people to choose from?

Nope.  Even if a new member comes along and has his heart set on becoming the umpteenth Bruce Willis wearing sunglasses (avoidance of likelihood of confusion in the forum be damned!), he can still always upload the image himself.

I'm surprised that I was the first, particularly given this "impressions you get from avatars" discussion! Because now it is finally revealed that our rebel spy, who had long been wielding the 5-dotted blue lightsaber of a noble Jedi knight, is actually an evil, red lightsaber-wielding Sith lord who had been operating undercover and spying on the rebels!

With that angry red beam I will now shiver in terror whenever I read one of your posts!

Can anyone think of a reason why we should leave the default avatars enabled for people to choose from?

If avatars were required, then it would probably make sense to have a pool available to choose from. Or if the culture of the forum somehow made duplicate avatars so common that the duplicates weren't noticeable (like if it was a Simpsons forum where everyone used a Simpsons character as an avatar). So if I try hard, I can think of reasons why such a feature might be desirable at another forum. But here, given the existing culture, even my devil's advocate can't come up with any good reasons.

Thanks for at least furthering the proposal!

Good point.  Encouraging avatars is a good thing, but all these duplicates do get old fast.

I honestly didn't even realize there were duplicates. I thought those were all the same person. I guess I don't really read names, just look at pictures. :)

Just:
Angry Baby
Missouri Bruce Willis
Mustache Guard

And Are Belspy (the B is silent).
I always say "Are-Pe-lepsy: A horrible disfiguring disease. Probably cased by mustache rash.

^^ This is how I say it in my head, too! I sometimes get confused when someone uses "Rebel", for short, in a thread...

Nah - Bob W. IS the only Bruce Willis here to me and I think the avatar suits him. Direct, no nonsense kind of guy.  I'm not sure what my avatar is exactly but I think it's what would come out of a mating between a Tribble and Wilford Brimley. Kind of like me - soft and fuzzy on the outside, mean and grumpy (bitchy?) on the inside :-)!

Yeah,  I think I'll stick with Bruce for now.  I had considered

Now I feel like I need an avatar like all the cool kids... so here's a rock.

You can see feldspars? Is there a larger image version I need to be aware of?

Yes, but be forewarned that perusing pinup galleries like this can lead to self-abuse.  Let's try to keep it clean.

This thread is hilarious.

Never realized how much I attributed personalities to people based on their avatar... totally explains why I can't take people with Kurt Cobain avatars seriously, though. Always felt like they were whining (no offense, unless somehow you're the real Kurt Cobain and reading this from beyond the grave, in which case it's completely intended).

Also, I'm jumping on the "relieved sol's avatar isn't a picture of him" bandwagon. I always get a slight sense of dread when that picture starts staring out of the monitor at me.

I can't relate to that bandwagon.  In my mind, that arresting image *is* the face of sol.  If I were to meet sol in person, like Rebs, I would be disappointed to see that that face does not really belong to him.  And, like skyrefuge, early on I had held out some small hope that it did.

The fact that we're all still talking about it three pages into this thread is a testament to the power of the image, if nothing else.

I hope at least sol's name in real life is sol (though I suppose it would be acceptable if he capitalizes it).

Likewise brooklyguy - in my mind you *are* a single-celled, ciliated organism from Brooklyn.  But then again, doesn't that describe a lot of New Yorkers? :-)

You can rest easy, because that's actually true (but please keep that information close to the vest, because, to paraphrase the famous New Yorker cartoon, on the internet nobody knows if you're a single-celled, ciliated organism.)
