And sexy stuff like swapping out the kitchen outlets for GFCI (which we can do ourselves, of course).  But I need to rein in the house lust, big time.

Consider upping the sexiness and do GFCI breakers (probably actually GFCI+AFCI) instead.  Pricy but nice.  Perfect to lust after.

Meh, we have GFCI breakers at my rental property, we needed them because the whole house is old and has a weird electrical system.  We were converting from a fused, ungrounded system in the crawlspace, so we put the boxes outside.  Now whenever the GFCI pops from a tenant trying to plug a straightener and a blow dryer into the same socket, they have to walk outside and reset the breaker instead of just hitting the reset button on the outlet.

The other fun thing is that they wear out after a certain number of cycles, I guess my tenant did the blow dryer/straightener combo so many times that the GFCI breaker refused to reset and I had to pay $300 for the breaker instead of $20 for an outlet.

What exactly happens if a person acts on their feelings of lust for an electrical outlet?
There might be a spark in the relationship but the end result will shock you.

As a matter of fact, a lusting for GFCI receptacles is actually nonplussed: ie, the opposite of shocking.

I'm lusting after a Bose A30 aviation headset. I've been taking flying lessons*, and recently spent a few days at the world's biggest air show, where I got to try them on. They're super comfortable, the sound quality is great, and the noise cancelling is top notch.

They also cost $1300 new. Oof.

*This is possibly the most non-frugal thing I've done in my life, aside from our clown house. I recognize that it's entirely discretionary and frivolous, and I'm doing it simply because it has always been a dream of mine.  I suppose I could say "this is why we drive old cars and I take a sack lunch to work."

Flying is not mustachian, but if you’re going to do it, it would be good to keep your hearing, be comfortable, and hear all the relevant radio traffic which will help you be safer.

My DH has been to Oshkosh twice, and also flew private planes through his flying club for years. When he inherited some $$$ from his grandparents in 2009, he bought an old M-type Mooney, and kept if for ~ 12 years.

Not frugal, but a lifetime dream for him, as well. He sold it a couple of years ago.

I got some extra birthday money this year from my parents (a substantial amount - they are elderly with a paid off house and their accountants are starting to hint that they've oversaved) and whenever I see a concert ticket that lights my fire a little I think back to that check and go "well, I have that birthday money, they would love me to buy something fun with it instead of being boring and buying VTSAX like I usually do..."

This has led to some serious overspending on concert tickets this summer. I guess I'm not one of those people with money who can't spend it that they're talking about in that other thread.

But I'm still in control, because I didn't buy ALL the concert tickets. Right? Right.

I really think that an hour in a glider and an hour in a taildragger should be mandatory.  I was already licensed and had over 100 hours when I did both of these.  I learned so much about aerodynamics and energy management in that hour of glider lesson.  The taildragger lesson forces you to learn rudder control that cannot be replicated in a tricycle gear.

I learned to fly and had almost 40 hours in before I decided not to license.  It boiled down to ongoing financial commitment issues to stay current and safe as a pilot, as well as time demand for something that was largely a solo activity.  Recently I’ve been thinking I might have to take it up again.  Safety is still top of mind for me though.  I love this idea about glider and taildragger time.  My son is really into airplanes right now, and we were watching a video of a 737 that suffered engine failure over the Gulf of Mexico, and the pilot ended up landing deadstick on a levee in Louisiana.  Saved everybody.  He was young but had well over 10,000 hours in lots of small planes and lots of jungle strip experience is Central (or South?) America.  Anyway, he side-slipped the 737 to hit the levee when once he knew he couldn’t make it to the airport too far in front of him.  Rudder control and seat of the pants flying skills can be invaluable in all sorts of situations.

My first few lessons, my instructor had me pull the throttle all the way to idle for every landing before turning base, so while it isn't truly a glider, I still have had a bunch of training for engine-out landings.

Everyone I've talked to has also said "get your instrument rating too!" But that's another significant time and money commitment. When I started, it was with a full realization that it might not work out--I might not like it, might not be able to overcome my tendency to motion sickness, etc. So far, though, it's been fantastic as well as challenging.

I went for a 5.5 hour flight with my brother in law in his 172 this week and I'm back to wanting a pilot license (and plane). I live somewhere with amazing beauty from the air, but I do think I'd need to get an instrument rating to feel comfortable flying up here.

That’s one my problems where I live.  Winter weather makes it difficult to fly for several months.  Summer weather offers ample opportunities for local flights, but it’s not so useful for longer trips because you can leave when it’s clear, and if the clouds come in while you’re gone, you won’t get back without an instrument rating.  This makes flying more of a toy than a useful tool… without the instrument rating.

There's an ad on Barnstormers offering accelerated pilot training.  There's a 9-day instrument rating course listed.  It includes accommodation next to the airport in Hendersonville, NC.

I know none of the details, but an amateur pilot I know gets some (required?) hours in by flying as a volunteer for the local sheriff's department. I presume he doesn't get paid to fly, but the sheriff's department picks up the aircraft related costs. If anyone is looking for a more mustachian way to fly, it could be worth finding out if there are volunteer or even paid part time/flexible hours gigs.

I'm just going to leave this here.  I actually know this guy.  It was his first lesson and the instructor failed to check for proper fuel levels.  They were less than 10 miles from the airport they took off from.  That instructor....isn't allowed to teach anymore.

I've always struggled with couches, there doesn't seem to be a great correlation between price and comfort.

Currently lusting over front door keypad locks.  (Yes, this is a continuation of the All Things House lust.)  I'm pretty sure this is one we will actually do.  While this is a somewhat technology-based item, I want the least technological version.  I don't think I need to be able to unlock the front door via app or reset the code remotely, or anything like that.  I just want to be able to punching a code to lock and unlock the front door, or give someone else a temporary code to do so. Ideally, it would still work with a key back up, since I'm reading horror stories about dead batteries causing people to be locked out, although it a backyard door is key-accessible, that solves the issue, too.

The front door has a separate handle and deadbolt, so I'll need one that works with that configuration.

I balked at the price of those for a long time and finally got one when I replaced my front door and they are AMAZING. 100% worth the money. Mine complains when the battery is low so I'm not worried about getting locked out. It's not app-based or anything. You just punch in the code to unlock the deadbolt. Entering or removing codes is done via a master code. That's a bit clunky, so not suited for changing codes all the time. More geared to your own house, rather than an Airbnb.

Every time I open the door I'm pleased with how nice the handle is, and every time I unlock it I'm pleased with the deadbolt.

I don't know anything about the instructor advertising on Barnstormer, but the ad is current.  I doubt he would pay for ads if he isn't legally able to teach.

This sounds like exactly what I want. I see very little need for additional codes, but I'd like the ability to have one, just in case, so it doesn't matter if it's a cumbersome process.

Would you care to share the brand, model name/number if you have it, or any other details?

The front door has a separate handle and deadbolt, so I'll need one that works with that configuration.
We did ours and love it. Fortunately separate deadbolt keypads are generally the cheapest way to go.  The best thing is our kids can get in without keeping up with a key, although we're still working on making sure they lock the door after they come in.  We live in  a ridiculously safe neighborhood, so no real worries other than teaching responsibility.

Check on the table of random stuff marked down at your local hardware store.  We found ours on the markdown table at Lowes for ~$50 a year or two ago.

This sounds like exactly what I want. I see very little need for additional codes, but I'd like the ability to have one, just in case, so it doesn't matter if it's a cumbersome process.

I believe Schlage.

This one: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Schlage-BE365-Cam-Keypad-Camelot-Satin-Nickel-Single-Cylinder-Deadbolt-1-Cylinder-Electronic-Deadbolt-Lighted-Keypad/1000002774

Expensive but I'd buy it again in a heartbeat. Dead easy installation - took all of 20 minutes. Just don't lose the master code.

I've never understood the reason for an electronic door lock.  Seems like adding complexity to a simple system, and (from what I've read anyway) doesn't offer any benefit in security over a keyed entry.

I had one of the app enabled Schlage locks.  I really appreciated the fact that I could set my mother's code to only work between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. and that I could set it to automatically lock at a certain time of day or as part of my Alexa bedtime routine.  It quit working after about 6 months.  I suspect that my husband sabotaged it, but I haven't gotten around to replacing it.

@GuitarStv The main advantage is that you can't lock your keys in the house.  Or lose them.

Ah, I see.  We've actually got a small wall mounted lockbox attached to the back side of our house with a spare set of keys in it.  Mostly for when I go on long bike rides, forget my keys, and then my wife is out doing something when I come back - it works pretty great.

Have been lucky enough to not actually have lost my keys before though.

The benefit isn't in security, it's in convenience.

You don't need to bring a key every time you leave the house to walk the dog. You can't lock yourself out. You can provide guests/kids/sitters/contractors with a code. If your friend is coming over, text them the code so they can let themselves in. Punching a code is faster and requires less dexterity than operating a key. If you have a lot of people in and out of the house, you can set up unique codes for all of them, and wipe them later.

I have two cars that don't use keys at all, so now my keychain has disappeared and I love it.

I had a lockbox before, for emergencies, but it was clunky and pretty insecure. Turns out, I just hate keys.

I was long skeptical of the kind that turned the bolt for me. I prefer the code only unlock the handle which I can then turn. That's what my house came with and I've generally like it, but they are quite expensive. Last year I bought one for my shed project that uses 4 AA batteries and actually turns the lock. It's worked reliably for almost a year now. $20 on amazon. It did come with a key which will physically unlock to door if I need it, but I leave it in the house and have yet to use it.

Two things.  First a mustard yellow Kia Soul and secondly an electric bike with a pull behind cargo wagon.  No real reason, just a frivolous whim.

That looks the model that came with my house as well. It's been great. Good enough that I don't really mind not having the key for it. It will stick a little sometimes when it's really cold out.

I'm trying to buy some recreational land within 30 minutes of Breckenridge and build a short term rental. I would really like to get 10 acres, so I can built my own personal ski run. A north facing lot would be ideal because the snow would be shaded. Snow quality would be better and last longer into the season.

About 4 days ago, a 44.5 acre lot for 290K is up for sale. It's north facing and 29 minutes to Breckenridge. It's currently out of my price range, but not by that much. In 2 years, if I could get something like that for 250K, I would pull the trigger. Considering that it might be realistic in 2 years to buy something like that is now making me obsess over it. It would probably take another 5-10 years to come up with the money to build a house, but that timeline totally works. I would rather wait a few more years to get a bigger piece of land.

What if you asked about purchasing 1/2 of it?  Or could you buy it and sell off a few smaller parcels?  It seems like if you wait the price might increase over time, or someone else might purchase it.  I don't know the market, but most folks only dream about being able to afford a few acres so there should be plenty of interest if you offer smaller parcels.

A Dreamsofa.

I'd love to get something that looks nice and will last a long time, but that price tag...

I've always struggled with couches, there doesn't seem to be a great correlation between price and comfort.

We bought a 3 seat set for about the same price as this one piece from a local furniture store. After 4 years it's trashed.

That's led me to the idea of spending more to get something that will hold up for 15+ years. Plus made in USA.
Our couch was a Costco find for $1400 - it's been awesome.

My initial reaction to $290k for 44.5 acres was to say,  "Figure out the loan and go buy it!"  But then, rural lots can have encumbrances that make them not as desirable as they might seem.  Even if they have good public road access and access to electricity, they might have limited water availability.  Even with a well, it might not be adequate to provide water to multiple lots if subdivided.  Large utility easements can take away a good chunk of a rural lot, and even if what is there when you buy it is acceptable,  you could have no control over possible expansion in the future.  In the end what looks like a Just go buy it! piece of land can turn into something that needs to be passed over while you wait for the right opportunity.

I’m kinda wanting a Garmin watch. A couple months ago, I passed out/fell asleep/tripped while peeing in the middle of the night and smacked my head, giving me a concussion. I don’t remember the fall, but it’s apparently pretty common when you have a concussion to not remember the 5 seconds or so before a concussion. Bottom line, I’m not really sure what happened.

Anyways, I have a really old Apple Watch that I’ve been tracking my sleep with out of curiosity, and it showed my heart rate at 38bpm right around the time that I fell, and normally my heart rate while sleeping is ~45. It could be an error though, I really don’t know. It’s a really old Apple Watch and doesn’t really track heart rate all that well. We went to the ER after I fell and they did an EKG, said it was normal, but they tracked me for all of 15 seconds. I’m kinda wanting to see if there’s anything odd in my heart rate and the Garmin watch’s advertise that they have ECG functionality.

I’m a pretty fit 37 year old, I ride bikes ~5 hours a week and lift weights 2-3x per week so I guess it’s unlikely that I’ve got some kind of heart issue, but I’m wondering if having one of these wearable ECGs would give me a better idea of what my heart is doing on a day to day basis.

Anyone have one of the new Garmin watches? Any comments on its ecg capability? I feel fine now but it took a couple months for me to recover from that concussion and really don’t want another one.

Due to zoning, it's not possible to sub-divide the land. If it was possible, it would say it in the listing and the asking price would be higher. There is one other comp right now that is 40 acres and within 30 minutes of Breckenridge. It's currently listed for 450K. The reason for the higher asking price is that it backs up to National Forest.

I'm looking to purchase in the Alma/Fairplay, CO area, within 30 minutes of Breckenridge. Most of the lots are 1-2 acres. The bigger the lot, the more rare it is. However, I don't think the demand is very high for the large parcels of land (10+ acres). People want privacy and that's pretty easy to accomplish with 2 acres. The price break down is below for raw land. Asking 290K for 44.5 acres is a steal. I imagine it will sell pretty quick, even for a larger lot.

1-2 acres: 80K to 100K
2-5 acres: 100K to 180K
5-10 acres: 180-250K
10-20 acres: 250-350K
20-45 acres: 300K - 500K

Once or twice a year I get a craving for a Big Mac.  About halfway through the Big Mac, I wonder why I did that, but fast forward 6 to 12 months, and I get the craving again.  Also, whenever I travel internationally I often get one McD’s meal just to prove that the Big Mac tastes the same there, too.  It always does.  And I always wonder why I did that.

This sounds like exactly what I want. I see very little need for additional codes, but I'd like the ability to have one, just in case, so it doesn't matter if it's a cumbersome process.

Expensive but I'd buy it again in a heartbeat. Dead easy installation - took all of 20 minutes. Just don't lose the master code.
Thanks.  That looks like a good option.

That looks the model that came with my house as well. It's been great. Good enough that I don't really mind not having the key for it. It will stick a little sometimes when it's really cold out.

A security-conscious friend of mine has one of these. I visited his house one time and upon entering said, "So your door code has 2, 3, and 4 in it?" He kind of freaked out. All I did was notice which buttons had worn differently. If you get one, change your door code now and then or make sure another family member has a code using 1, 5, and 6.

I remember staying at an AirBnB a couple years ago that used a touch-sensitive display and randomized the locations of the numbers each time, I'm guessing to avoid just that problem.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
