The stupidest thing I'm lusting after right now is 2 kittens. I was just supposed to be fostering them, and now we have someone who is interested, but I have gotten attached and want to keep them. The reason it's stupid is because I already have 2 cats. Four cats is too many, right??

It could earn you a Childless Cat Lady tee shirt (assuming you don't have children).

No harm, no foul.  Remember - if it doesn't work out as a pet, cat can be substituted for rabbit in most recipes.

Cat is typically greasier - so any recipe with a lot of added oils/fats needs to be modified a bit.

So that shop I was lusting after is nearing completion.  It is turning out beautifully, both in appearance and function.  Unfortunately, it’s likely to cost twice as much as I originally anticipated.  This is kind of a bummer, but also it is what it is, and I’m grateful to be in a position that I can forge ahead with construction without too much concern.  This still may be something stupid to lust after, but after 20 years of lusting, I’m glad to now be doing my parts of the finish work rather than just dreaming about the stupid thing!

I'm lusting after an Acura K24 engine swap into my blown up 2005 Mini Cooper S.

As we downsized as empty nesters and shifted to an electric as our primary vehicle our well-used pickup truck went away and we replaced it with the Cooper as a fun backup and occasional track day car.  It originally cost us $5,200 used.

But......I wanted to improve it so that original cost has more than doubled as I did all kinds of things to the chassis, suspension, etc, doing the work myself.  ( <=== mustachian justification attempt)   Last winter, while replacing a broken front axle I went a little crazy and installed coil overs, a limited slip diff, and.......other stuff.  This summer I did a new personal best at the local track by 2 seconds.  Yay!

But.....I blew up the engine in the next session.  Boo!  :(  :(  :(

I could replace the engine with an OEM reman (and do it myself), or have my old engine rebuilt by someone else with lots of forged pieces bits for more power and install it myself, or.......

I could have a race shop I know swap in an Acura K24A2A for a big increase in power and reliability.  (That process if far beyond my technical ability.)

For $25,000.

Into my originally $5,200 cheap fun backup car.

Doesn't make a whole lot of sense but that's what I'm lusting after.

(It may not be Mustachian, but we can afford it.)

Perhaps it would be cheaper and you could go faster with a Daymak C5 regular electric go-kart. It costs $10k but goes from 0-60 in 3.9 seconds. That's cheaper than $25k and probably faster than a souper cooper.

The risk is that you'd always be tempted by the $60,000 C5 Blast EDF:
"The Daymak C5 Blast can reach 0 – 60 mph in just 1.5 seconds, which is more than one second less than the current fastest kart as crowned by the Guinness Book of World Records. In fact, it’s also faster than any production supercar or superbike that’s even been made."

That would be a bad investment unless it shortened your lifespan, in which case your remaining retirement savings would last your entire life.

I owned a kart for about 6 months, drove it 3x, and sold it.  I didn't care for the g's it pulled, utter lack of suspension, and the fact that I lack Popeye forearms to wrestle it around.

(Yes, I bought a high end seat in just my size, had the rib protector, the neck roll, etc.  Just didn't care for the hardship of actually driving the little beastie.)

It has been my observation that engine swaps are very rarely "reliable". Sure, the K24 may go a million miles, but there's always a ton of issues surrounding engine swaps that don't get discovered/ironed out unless you can send the car out for a million test miles like big manufacturers can.

There's a lot of cars you can buy that are plenty fast for $25k.

Full disclosure: I bought the stupid thing.

But at least it wasn't the stupidest. I was looking at a couple of much more expensive motorcycles as well.

Sweet, a DRZ-400S.  That was the first bike of my "second childhood".  Great on the backroads and forest service roads.  I had a blast on mine.  Rode it for a couple of years and when I decided I needed something a bit more nimble to explore the steep mountain trails I was able to sell it in a matter of weeks for a decent profit.
I also joined the ADVrider.com forum where I met a lot of riding buddies and attended a few of the local rallies over the years.  That is a great way to find places to ride and friends to ride with.

Close! It's a DR650.

I've been on advrider for like a million years.  But ~7 years ago I found this dumb website and got rid of my WR250R. I feel my financial situation is a little more on track and I can properly afford a motorcycle now.

Have some big cross country trips in mind and wanted something a little more highway friendly that could still play in the dirt when needed.  And it's definitely a little cheaper than the Tenere 700 and V-strom 800s I was also looking at.

"Big cross-country trips" sound awesome.  Cheap traveling and priceless memories.  Sounds MMM-approved to me.

we were watching a video of a 737 that suffered engine failure over the Gulf of Mexico, and the pilot ended up landing deadstick on a levee in Louisiana.  Saved everybody.  He was young but had well over 10,000 hours in lots of small planes and lots of jungle strip experience is Central (or South?) America.  Anyway, he side-slipped the 737 to hit the levee when once he knew he couldn’t make it to the airport too far in front of him.  Rudder control and seat of the pants flying skills can be invaluable in all sorts of situations.
I watch 3 different pilots that talk about possible disasters or actual disasters. I find the explanations interesting, lots of redundant systems, but many problems are when the holes in the Swiss cheese line up. Mentour Pilot, Pilot Debrief, and 74gear are the 3 pilots that I watch.

A giant, convertible RV. Will I do anything about buying it? Nope. Satisfied that itch by looking at the pictures for free.

Or a cheap DIY special: https://www.theautopian.com/this-wild-vintage-motorhome-was-built-to-survive-bullets-and-outlast-its-own-powertrain-several-times/

Or a not so cheap RV: https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1033793424601534/
I saw one recently on the web for half that price and still very clean.

Again, won't do anything like this b/c I know the reality of it - we'd use it 3-4 times and be done. I still like the idea of having an RV, just not the reality of the real TCO.
We'd be like our acquaintance with the houseboat: the TCO is too high to really enjoy. Two big block V-8 gassers really slurp up the fuel. And slip costs. And maintenance.

Besides, we're homebodies. We have plenty of hobby projects already. And a budget popup camper that we barely use.

We are over-obligated as it is. A perfect weekend is staying home, a place we adore, drinking coffee/reading/kids/critters/etc.

I'm building out a budget van for ski trips (economics of it are shakey, but pencils out to needing to replace about 40 hotel nights to break even). I'm currently building the sleeping platform, and am currently on version 2.0. The problem is that as I refine the design and then build, I keep seeing better ways to do it. The 1.0 version was too simple, but worked. I reworked it a few times to optimize it, but ended up starting over from scratch with a much better design. I sold v1.0 for the cost of the materials and v2.0 is SO much better. But the problem is that I really enjoy figuring out how to do things well and I am already thinking of ways that it could have been done better, but v2.0 is totally adequate and I can't justify starting over again even if it would be a fun project. That said, I think I have a good enough design that would work in the vast majority of minivans that I could probably turn it into a side hustle. Since I'm already FIRE, it is hard to put that much hustle into a small amount of profit.

You sound like an engineer! And this sounds like more of a hobby than a side gig.  The difference, of course, being that one costs you money and the other makes you money :)

Not lusting after it, but certainly stupid: a car.  We've been a one-car family (of four) for the better part of 6 years, which has worked just swimmingly while I e-bike around town.  Our kids have been aging relentlessly and are nearing driving age.  We have no plans to just buy them a car when they get a license.  I'm an anti-car dependence advocate and have been hammering it into their brains for years that alternate modes of transportation should be sought whenever possible.  Nevertheless, a second family car has been in the planning as we reach three and then four drivers in the household.

We're still a couple of years out, but I have started poking around, with an interest in a used EV to capture the $4k tax credit.  We just sneaked under the MAGI cutoff last year.  Not sure if we will this year.  Might end up with the same car (Tesla Model 3) I was actually lusting after years ago before I flipped the switch and went all in on e-biking.

Well, I did it.  Was still planning on waiting until sometime next year, but then November 5 happened, and I quickly realized that meant a strong possibility of the tax credit disappearing or otherwise being gutted.  Beyond the $4000 itself, the tax credit has helped depress prices of used EVs in general, as it pushed slighly higher-priced cars down to the $25k limit (and this cascaded down the line).

Thankfully, it does seem that the insurance will be much cheaper than I was fearing, so once we get this charging stuff figured out, after gas savings it shouldn't be too much of a recurring hit to have two cars.  Obviously, we're out the purchase price, but I'm satisfied with paying just over $20k after taxes for a car that was ~$60k just a few years ago.

Sure, and that's Mustachian, but this thread is about what we're lusting over.

One buddy has made me drive his BRZ.  $10k gets you a good one.  Nice car, but didn't float my boat.  Another buddy is championing me getting an old E30 like his and...well......boat still not afloat.  Same buddy drove me two days ago to look at a nice $25k S2000.  Lovely car, great reputation, but....another leaky boat.  On another tire kicking trip I sat in a $40k Lotus Elise and I did like it, but I don't fit.

Another friend has taken delivery of a new Z06.  A performance bargain at $100k+ but I don't want it.  And, I could afford it.

Thanks, sincerely, for the replies, but I'm lusting after turning my broken-ass 2005 Mini into a Super Cooper and damn the expense.

I've been lusting after a new camera (perhaps the Nikon Z8). They go for something like $3,500 new.  It would also involve in all likelihood spending additional thousands on new lenses, as the lenses I have for my 10-year-old camera (the D3200 that I purchased for $600 but is now available in like-new condition for around $100) would either need to be used with an adapter or replaced (and everybody raves about the Nikon's new lenses for the Z mount cameras so I'm lusting after those as well).

My compromise was to buy a D7200 in used but like-new condition for around $500.  It addresses my main problem with my old camera of very slow and inaccurate auto-focusing, while allowing me to continue to use my old lenses (which are generally either very good or good enough for me), and since the 'F mount' has been deprecated (and since many folks are moving to the new mirrorless cameras), there are excellent used lenses available for the d7200 at quite reasonable prices should I want to get better 'glass.'

Moreover, I'm really just a rank amateur, and the Z8 would really be massive overkill.  I've only had the d7200 for less than a week but it seems to be doing everything I really wanted out of a new camera, without the crazy price tag!  So... Mustachian crisis averted - I figure spending $500-600 on a camera every ten years is, if not quite 'Early Retirement Extreme' levels of economy, at least not as facepunch-worthy as ~$6,000 (what the Z8 would've come to with the new lenses) per whim.

Thanks, sincerely, for the replies, but I'm lusting after turning my broken-ass 2005 Mini into a Super Cooper and damn the expense.

I do work a race series regularly attended by a dude in an old CRX with a K24.  He's also a dude that can pretty much drive whatever he wants (sometimes he shows up in his McLaren). That little CRX embarrasses many a supercar driver.  If done right, I suspect a Mini with that motor would be a hell of a lot of fun.

It's an excellent investment!

Bokoma Shower head ($94):
https://www.amazon.com/GROHE-Vitalio-Rain-130-Anti-Limescale/dp/B00G3BQ0DQ

It continuously goes from wide spray to concentrated pulse spray automatically.
I had this in a fancy hotel room.

I thought it was neat how it did that.
Can't justify the $90 price tho over my 4.99 pulse jet shower head

Don't discourage him, someday I might find myself sitting on a pile of money and watching too many old rally videos and I know I can come here and post something like "Dang, really want an Alpine A310 GT" and in a couple hours RWD will have a link waiting for me to drunkbuy one. :D

@Askel  You're in the US, right? Are you prepared to import one? In any case, the A310 doesn't come up for sale very often, and even more rare to find one that has already gone through customs and such. Looks like the last online auction sale in the US was 3 years ago.

Congrats on the EV. We love our used Kona Electric. Don't know what you may or may not know. In our social circle we are the first EV owners so we're answering alot of questions. Maybe the info below will be useful. i hope so.

Setup a L2 charger at home if you can. It is a game changer. We used L1-120V charging for the first couple of months (included in the car's trunk) but we went from our EV being a commuter to our EV becoming the everything but trip to the beach car (500+ miles, long distance).

L2 allows us to go from a low SOC to a 100% if we want overnight. With a L1-120V charger, we needed to keep the car plugged in every night just to recover from the weekend mileage by Wednesday or Thursday plus daily mileage.

We keep the car charged to between 60% and ~40% during the week and up to 70% on the weekends. We'll charge to 100% if we need to but rarely need to. 70% will take us all the way to grandma's house where we can L2 charge again for the ride home. No convenient DCFC infrastructure there.

We use the car's built-in off-peak charger timer so when we plug in, the car samples how many KW our L2-220V charger can deliver and then calculates when it should "wake up" and charge to be ready at our defined departure time. After the quick sample when we plug in, the car goes to sleep and waits. It works very well. Very easy to by-pass the timer by pressing the timer button next to the charger port in the first 5-10 seconds after we plug in if we want to charge immediately (like at grandma's house). The experts say it is not good to let a Li-ion battery sit at a high SOC for too long. The timer means the car finishes charging just as we are ready to use it which is excellent in case we want to charge to 100%.

Also, I'm not an expert but these people are:

There's a particular airplane I want to build.  Someone is selling a partially-completed kit, *with* an engine, for $7k.  I don't have a pilot's license.
Update:  After much soul-searching and discussion with DW, we've decided to go ahead with my dream.  I'm close to getting my pilot's license, and I convinced the owner of that partially-built kit to sell it to me.  It's now hanging from the ceiling of my garage, waiting for me to finish getting my license and finish some other house projects so I can start working on it.

I am *super* excited about it.

Gonna have a few more beers until importing a 40 year old french performance car with a motor built by a committee sounds like a good idea.  I'm sure it'll look damn cool sitting in my barn which is good because it might spend a lot of time there. :D    Honestly, $46k was less than I was expecting....

Nice! I'm pretty sure there are probably only a handful of experiences that compare to taking flight in something you built yourself.

Hey, I'm just the enabler here. No comment on whether it is a good idea, haha. If you just want something to look at there are scale models:

Sign up for a term life policy BEFORE getting your pilot's license.

Yes, we have life insurance on me. :)

By the time I finish it, I expect we'll be FIRE. This is not a short term project!

It's a Mini-IMP. An old design that is rarely built nowadays, for a number of reasons, but ticks a lot of boxes for me in terms of design.

As far as I know, there is only one flying example at the moment, although there have been a number of others that have flown in the past, and there are at least two others that are airworthy.

So this weekend was my oldest son’s birthday. He wanted a skateboard. I ordered him a good board to learn on and found a used longboard on OfferUp for me to ride along with him. While researching the make and brand of said used longboard shoes I fell down a rabbit hole into sleek new fangled ones. The one I got is just fine but boy do I really want a Pantheon Supersonic now

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
