An ice cream maker. I suddenly, for some reason, really want an ice cream maker. And I know it's dumb and something I absolutely do not need. Sigh.
Maybe writing it here will make me stop wanting one.

Just buying a pint of ice cream might help too!

They are given away pretty frequently on my local Buy Nothing group.  You could put an ask in on your local group.

My in-laws gave us one for Christmas about six years ago. I used it probably ten times and then donated it. It was fun, but for us making ice cream was actually more expensive than buying Ben and Jerry's on sale. Most ice cream makers can only make a pretty small quantity of ice cream, so you put in quite a bit of effort and time (at least for the more interesting flavors) for not much payoff.

I don't want to be eating tons of ice cream, so it seemed like a better strategy to just buy ice cream once in a while rather than have a whole dedicated appliance for it.

We were given an ice cream maker attachment for our (free to us) KitchenAid mixer. It’s quite a cool little gadget, but we’ve only used it twice.

I got that as a free add-on when I bought my mixer.  I haven't used it much, but it does make pretty good Coke slushies.

After watching https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbra-p-y-uE&t=424s

I'm seriously lusting after the new Toyota J70 series with 4.5L diesel and manual transmission. Million mile/km vehicles.
In reality, Toyota never sold them here, so the only way is to get an older one either via gray market, or buy one from someone who did that.

Instead, I'm thinking of an older J80/100/200 series (the wagon variant spinoffs of the J70) - namely the Toyota Land Cruiser and Lexus LX series.
Have had two US Cruisers.  2000 100 series, bought with 300k miles for $5k, sold with 328k miles for $6k.  Current family adventure vehicle is a 2008 200 series bought for $20k with 200k miles, currently has 281k miles.  Haven't had any major issues.

They're great trucks, and hold their value really well.  Best bet is finding a local soccer mom vehicle 10ish years old and well cared for.

The only downside is they get terrible MPG.  15 mpg or less.

I'm debating what the replacement for our 08 will be in the next few years.  The price spread between a few year old 200 series, and a base model 2024 Land Cruiser is almost none.  They are different vehicles, but both would be a suitable replacement for us.  We put about 10k miles a year on our Cruiser, so theoretically a new truck could last us 20+ years.

The new baby Landcruiser looks pretty awesome, as does the GX550 -- I am hoping that Toyota/Lexus makes a PHEV of one of them eventually.

It is also very good at taking up freezer space!  Hasn't been used in over a year at my house, yet there it sits.  At least it is settling down towards the bottom of the freezer.

The shelf life on fried dough is ridiculous.  It goes from amazing tasting at napalm levels of heat to completely disgusting and inedible two minutes later at congealing grease temperatures.

I like both, the Cruiser would probably be my pick for the Hybrid, although the battery does take up ~3" of height in the cargo area.  The TT V6 in the GX is reportedly only delivering ~15-17 MPG, which isn't much better than my 200.

Fortunately supplies are scarce of both, and many dealers are asking absurd markups, so there is little danger of me picking one up for a few years.  They are generally vehicles people buy and keep, so I don't expect the used market to have very many for a while...

I don't need an SUV because it would sabotage my financial goals.

What I lust for, and cannot have in the united states, is a station wagon. Preferably a hybrid getting 50mpg from a reliable brand. Stripped down of options, and costing $25k new. 100+ car models on the market and none of these.

Been looking in the local area, within 50 miles, for used 100/200 series but they are very few, since owners keep them for a long time. And those on sale are stupid prices. The stupider part of this 'Yota Lust is that we absolutely don't need it, or an older crew cab Toyota Tundra as alternative. I'm 100% WFH, wife (100% WFH since March 2020) is retiring early soon (100% burn out and 50% health-related) and we have a 2015 RAV4 XLE that suffices our needs well, plus a 2019 Honda Insight which was hers, then my commuter car until 2023. But stupid is as stupid does.

Kira Nero is close. Hybrid wagon. 49 mpg. $28k new.

I reject the idea that this is a stupid thing to lust after, lol.

I am lusting after some tie dye shirts for a similar reason.

If they ever send me back to the office I will be wearing a tie dye shirt and shorts and flip flops. :)

I'm not even joking.

Working with a new client (fed agency). Video calls with the infrastructure engineers, developers, PMs, leadership. Some people in office, others remote. No one cares about backgrounds, shirts, looks. We're so focused on delivering that clothing is a non-issue. I've walked away from a call to close a door and they see my running shorts on. No. One. Cares.
And the top person we report to is an actual astronaut. Super sharp and humble AF.

Bank on topic - someone in my neighborhood has an old Toyota Tundra longbed crew cab 4x4. surface rust on the step rails. saw the owner in his driveway and made an offer to buy. He said no, it has only 150k miles and still has life. But he told me he knows people selling these, so I gave him my number to contact me if he hears of a sale. The 'Yota Lust is on!

I want to go on a long luxurious trip to Japan.
It's not going to happen any time soon but I just keep on dreaming about the food and various experiences to be had there...

Why oh why is it so far....

$775 round trip economy from SFO or LAX in October, and a massively good exchange rate right now including Hyatt hotels for 12,000-15,000 points per night make this a year that you could make the dream reality despite how far it is. Tokyo Disney is $150/4 nights with the current exchange rate. You should look more closely….I know it’s not mustachian to spend $$, but I am on a “trip” to FIRE, so now I am working 1/2 time to travel until I no longer want to travel.

Oh, those tickets are pretty cheap! Last time I checked, it was around $1500 for the cheapest flight. I am also not in SFO or LAX so I have to do a layover there.

I am in a super spendy year already so planning another trip is out of the question. Maybe in a couple of years though!

I'm not sure which year Tundra you were looking at, but I know for sure that the Taco and the first gen Tundra have pretty serious frame rust issues, so make sure to get under the truck before buying and check out the frame.  Being in Florida, probably a lot of boaters out there, the rear frame/leaf spring hangers seem the most prone to having serious structural issues.

On the flip side, a well cared for higher mileage 100 or 200 bought at even close to market price will depreciate very little getting a few fun miles on weekends for a WFHer.
We've averaged ~13k miles on our 200 for the past 6 years we've had it, and it's depreciated MAYBE $5000 even though it's gone from 200k to 280k miles.  And I've probably averaged ~$500 per year in maintenance including tires, oil/fluid changes, brakes, and occasional small repairs.  Granted, that is all DIY, but still...

Someone I know just bought a 2012 Nissan Titan for $7500 or so with 180K miles. 2WD. No idea if it is a good deal but it is apparently in very good shape.

In our area on FB Marketplace trucks are either very expensive or very worn out.

Yeah trucks hold value like crazy because of two big factors:
-They're more durable than regular cars, so they have a longer service life and people will pay more for a used truck because its less "used up" than an equivalent mileage car.
-New trucks are crazy expensive right now, which drives demand into the used market.

I think we're (or at least I am) used to used trucks having terrible resale from when gas was very expensive in ~2005-2014, but gas is cheap now, so the cost of fuel between a 20mpg truck and a 40 mpg sedan can be easily cancelled out by repair costs, which have skyrocketed.

I wouldn't say they hold their value more than anything else. This truck had a base MSRP around $30k in 2012, so maybe it's lost (30k-7500)/30k=) 75% of its value ($1875 per year) in 12 years. A same-year base Nissan Versa, for comparison, had an MSRP of $10,990 and might sell for $3,500 today in similar condition (a loss of 68% of value, and $624 per year). I was conservative in choosing the Versa because it is a faster-depreciating car than a Toyota or Honda.

I'm really considering buying season tickets to my local theater's Broadway series.  The only thing that's holding me back is that of the four shows included in the package, I really only want to see Hadestown and the Addams Family.  There is also the Shrek musical, but it's not included in the package, which is annoying because I'd like to take the kiddo to it.  I think I might just get Hadestown and Shrek and then maybe see if going a little further to see Six is doable.

Is there much of a market for reselling tickets for the shows you can't attend?  Are the tickets cheaper or the seats better (or some other advantage, other than supporting the theater--although that could be a sufficient reason, too) if you get the season tickets vs buying for individual shows?

A Kwiggle. It’s the smallest and lightest folding bike out there and I want it. I could buy one and have it shipped here but the only way to try one out before buying is if I lived in the EU. There are of course no used ones for sale in the US. I could buy a used Brompton folding bike instead but Kwiggle folds significantly smaller and weighs significantly less.

The seats are much better, and the price would be slightly better if I were really interested in all four shows.  Supporting the theater is definitely a consideration.  I very much appreciate not having to drive an hour and a half to two hours, even if everything is usually on like a Tuesday night. Unfortunately though, there's not really a good way to resell the tickets.  They are virtual tickets in the theater's app with no way to transfer them.  I gifted my dad tickets for xmas and the only way for him to use them was to sign into my account for the night.  I've pretty much decided to go with just buying tickets to the two shows I want to see the most.

I want like 10 more eye shadow shades...

I only have 2 from Mac that I really like. Bought them maybe in 2017. Now I started using makeup more and I wish I had a lot more colors from Mac. I have some other colors (not Mac) but really don't care for them.

There is no real reason to buy more colors so here I am just fantasizing about them.

I got to see someone’s really cool Tesla car camping setup last week and it really got me interested.

I don’t have a Tesla and I won’t be in the market for a new vehicle for years, but it seemed pretty ideal for solo camping.

Oddly - not lusting after much right now. I have projects i want to finish but we're progressing. Slowly.

If a bunch of money landed in my lap I might move the needle on those projects faster.

I've been going to games shops and buying vintage Pokemon cards. I'm trying to collect the early sets (Base, Fossil, Jungle, Rocket) from 1999 to 2001 when I was into them in middle school. It's been a fun scavenger hunt. I'm not really trying to get the slabbed/graded ones, just loose cards in lightly played condition. On average the commons and uncommon cards are fairly cheap. Once I start going for holos, it's going to get a bit steeper

I did find an awesome Gyarados in *rough* shape for $4. Some kid really loved that card. I'm going to cherish the find.

It's been a great way to get out on the weekends.

Me neither, and that's not a very common occurrence. I was lusting hard after a specific new laptop earlier this year, but I held off on it, knowing I'd only "need" it in September. I just bought it this week, and while it's everything I wanted it to be, I'm not rabid about it. I only bought it because my previous laptop is clearly on its last legs. Which is (yet another proof) that time is the cure more often than not.

The hunt can be quite fun! That is an early stage of my projects often. What to buy, where to buy it, and then install.

Oh believe me, I get it.  There's some stuff from my childhood that is so deeply baked into my brain that I find myself strongly drawn to it even though they're objectively kind of dumb/frustrating.  I'm looking at you NES games that I could never beat as a kid.

To help get the NES fix out of my system my wife got me a “NES Classic”, but I also run several NES and Atari 2600 emulators on my PC that run on ROM dumps - I basically have every Atari and NES game ever made.

That doesn’t stop me from wanting an Atari 2600 Plus though…you can actually plug the old cartridges right into it and it looks adorably like the real thing.

My lovely wife who has embraced the idea of FIRE caught wind of this stupid future purchase when a complete, in the box copy of “Frogger” entered our home last week (only $22!) and (correctly) mentioned that “hmmm…sounds like the start of another collection and expensive clutter” and that has (so far) kept me from pulling the trigger on ordering.

A couple of years ago, I set my kid up with all of my old systems.  NES, SNES, PS2, XBox360, etc.  They all run through a switch and out to the same TV.  He...was not impressed.  "Mom, why does Link look like a potato?"  Brat.

Damn, I just googled the Atari 2600+, those look freaking sweet.  Like a lot of older millennials, I grew up with an Atari.  My dad typed his graduate thesis in the early 80s on an Atari word processing cartridge, which I think is freaking hilarious.  I don't remember which model we had though, ours didn't have the fake woodgrain like that 2600+.

Yeah our kids have not always embraced the same nostalgia as DW and I. Some of their "cool stuff" was not even close to cool back in the day. ;)

It’s fun to play the old games, but somehow I remember Pitfall being more difficult and less repetitive back in the day.

What aren't I lusting after right now?  lol  We are in escrow on a house, and I want All The Things.

It's very dated, but that's good, because I like dated, and the finishes are very high-quality, even if they are from the 80s.  I'm not someone who believes in tearing out stuff just because it's not the color palette or style of the day or the preferred material of the moment.  But if I suddenly had a few hundred thousand dollars extra that I had to spend or lose?  I could very easily sink them into this house.  It's not stuff that we need to make the house livable, or even comfortable, but my brain is racing with "if money were no object" possibilities.

It's an amazing house and I'm madly in love with it.  I have to keep reminding myself of that.  Would I love and use a pool?  yup.  Do I want to spend $70k (or whatever a pool costs)?  Not at all.  Would I really like a larger primary shower?  Yes.  And I can even see us potentially tackling that in the future.  But not now.  Not any time soon.

There will be a few changes.  Paint over the awfu salmon color in the kitchen.  Change the hideous light fixture in the primary bedroom.  And sexy stuff like swapping out the kitchen outlets for GFCI (which we can do ourselves, of course).  But I need to rein in the house lust, big time.

Consider upping the sexiness and do GFCI breakers (probably actually GFCI+AFCI) instead.  Pricy but nice.  Perfect to lust after.

@Villanelle , I feel you on the "if I had extra mad money" thing.  I've always got a mental list of house projects going.  I try to only actively work on one of them at a time though.  Right now, I'm not doing so well on that part and started a new one over the weekend.  In my defense, there is a bit of a time constraint on the new one due to weather considerations (need to get to a point where I can get some seeds out in 2-3 weeks).

What exactly happens if a person acts on their feelings of lust for an electrical outlet?

I have no idea what this it, but it sounds like it might be beyond my meager DIY skillset.
