Saw Dune Part 2. Now I’m over the ornithopter, but I really want a sand worm.

I haven't really kept up with this discussion (seems like a lot of vehicle talk) but ... a different house, in a different place. It's stupid because our house is nice enough, meets our daily needs, is paid for, and is in a friendly neighborhood that is fairly convenient to things we do. We are in our 60s, so it might be hard to start over again in a new place.

Yet there are less than ideal things. In the past, we went to a lot of trouble and sometimes expense trying to fix them, but in the end, we have what we have here.

Financially it is much more advantageous for us to stay here, in this house, until we can't (e.g., get too old and feeble), but somehow that's depressing. We've already been here for 25 years; do we want 25 more?

It's just DH and I; we are both retired, so we're not inextricably tied to this area and neighborhood, although we both have activities and connections (some very long-standing) here.

I personally don't enjoy living in one place for too long, I am currently really enjoying living in two locations and alternating back and forth.

I'm currently in my pragmatic home, the one that makes a lot of sense, is perfect for aging in place, and gives me access to all of the common sense amenities I could ever want, and both of our immediately families and oldest friends.

Then we have the home we love in a crazy location that's wildly inconvenient and absolutely delightful.

We don't have the kind of money available support two homes, and I for one don't want to deal with the hassle of it. It's enough to take care of one house!

Reading about your life is really making me consider this option for us.  Probably not until DH fully retires, so not the next chapter, but the one after.  I find that I simultaneously crave roots and a social circle, but also change.  Either 2 houses, or 1 house and a plan to travel 3-6 months seems like it might be the ideal solution.  Thanks for opening my eyes to that possibility.

Note that I'm not suggesting you do what I did, I'm empathizing with your feelings and sharing how I manage it.

I only manage it this way because I was able to find two homes that were absolutely dirt cheap and it was much, much cheaper to meet all of our needs with two extremely cheap homes than one even marginally "better" home.

It cost me less to buy a whole second house than it would have to upgrade to an apartment with an extra bedroom.

I have no idea what your circumstances would be best served by, I'm just saying that I understand having a perfectly good home and it not feeling like enough, and choosing to do something about it, even though it's not the most inexpensive option.

As mentioned in another thread, I'm building a home bar in a 1920s speakeasy style.  I've really been lusting after all the art deco light fixtures lately.  I did find one on FB marketplace for about 1/4 of the price of all the ones that I looked at online, and now I want stamped tin ceilings and wood-look floors.  But at just over 450 sq. ft. both of those options are a little out of the budget right now.

Am I allowed to say bitcoin? lol

Sure.  The title does say "stupid thing", after all!

But bitcoin isn't a thing.  It's an idea.

And yet, it is both stupid, AND something you can own :P

I have to keep reminding myself that the world is full of not-stupid investments, and that the stupid investments rising only make the news because it is so inexplicable and generates clicks for the clickbait. As each successive year passes and crypto markets still exist, they seem less and less like Beanie Babies and more like something that will be around for a while. Yet at the same time, as each year passes when these things are not starting to be commonly used as currencies, it becomes less and less likely that they'll ever grow into their original use cases. If they never become currencies, they'll eventually become worthless. So why invest in a game of musical chairs when on could invest in fast-growing companies like MTCH (82% EPS growth, PE=15), ALSN (34% EPS growth, PE=10), IBN (35% EPS growth, PE=18), or BBVA (32% EPS growth, PE=7.7)? A portfolio full of these sorts of stocks is what we should be lusting after, because who could confidently retire on a greater-fool-theory investment?

I am still lusting after the 8 sleep mattress cover.

I bought a cheap 'generic 8 sleep mattress cover' that will be here today for 150 dollars which will hopefully scratch the itch.

This is basically what I have been doing with several Andrew Huberman recommendations. I just buy the cheap generic version which usually is satisfying enough.

Consider mobile home skirting for the stamped tin ceiling.  Uncle lined his outdoor kitchen with it and the pressure washer kept it clean.  Neat look and easy cleanup.

If your bed is causing you to itch, you've got bigger problems then a mattress cover.  ;)

A hydraulic dump trailer. I've been using a 4x8 utility trailer for 24 years, in that time I've replaced the plywood sides and  the 2x floor twice, and scraped and grinded and repainted the metal frame and uprights once.
I build and work on houses and I'm getting older.
$6k +/-

There's a particular airplane I want to build.  Someone is selling a partially-completed kit, *with* an engine, for $7k.  I don't have a pilot's license.

Love my dump trailer. No more loading and then unloading… just push the button to unload! It’s heavy, though. I’d guess I’ve never but anything in the trailer (furniture, barkdust, kayaks, yard debris) that weighs even half as much as the trailer itself.

Yeah, from what I've heard, there's nothing more expensive than a "free" airframe.  At least it's an Experimental, so certification isn't a concern...

My brother-in-law is a pilot working on building his hours as well as an A&P mechanic. He and a friend with the same skill set split a 172 that needed a little work... They've done very well building hours that way. Last week I "helped" him build some hours by going flying on a sunny early spring day. And now I too am back to wanting to get my license although I'm not sure it's stupid...

Photos from the flight. The big mountain on the right in the first photo is Denali and the one on the left is Foraker. The second and third photos were from flying over one of my favorite local hiking areas. I've sat on the shores of the lake barely visible under all the snow in the second photo and done mile long sledding runs between the road switchback in the third.

You know what's better for your back than a bed . . .

Depends on what's wrong with your back.

Actually I tried the floor and the floor plus blankets with a pillow. Couldn't make it work. Now that I am recovered, the floor is a good place again to lay and read or watch TV.

Oh, heavens no.  RV builders are seeing kit prices go up by 30% as a result of the reorg.  You can't even get a used RV empennage kit for $7k.  Have you been following the Vans chapter 11 saga?

The kit I have my eye on is a single-seat, plans-built design from the 70's:  the Mini-IMP.

What you need is a 1936 Philco Radiobar... Put a bluetooth receiver inside and pipe music through it. I know, a little late for speakeasies but...

https://artdecocollection.com/furniture/sold-items-bars/spectacular-art-deco-philco-radiobar-1936/?slider=1
https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/storage-case-pieces/dry-bars/art-deco-philco-radio-bar-1936/id-f_2974442/

Only - apparently - about $11,000.

That is beautiful.  I've learned to stay off of 1stdibs because I want ALL the things.  And I have no room for more things.

I love those old tube radios.  I've got one in our living room serving as an end table.  (Although ours was found at the back of a barn that my dad was knocking down so didn't cost the prices I'm seeing on that website.  :P  )

There's a particular airplane I want to build.  Someone is selling a partially-completed kit, *with* an engine, for $7k.  I don't have a pilot's license.

Wait what? I assume for $7k its not one of the fast RV's?
Oh, heavens no.  RV builders are seeing kit prices go up by 30% as a result of the reorg.  You can't even get a used RV empennage kit for $7k.  Have you been following the Vans chapter 11 saga?

The kit I have my eye on is a single-seat, plans-built design from the 70's:  the Mini-IMP.

Speaking of planes, have you seen the videos of the Dragonfly?  It's an incredibly aerobatic ultralight which was designed & is used as a tow plane for hang gliders.  I would be "lusting" for one, but their price seems ridiculous for an ultralight.

One of the wildest maneuvers that it is capable of is it can rotate on its center axis (not sure that's the correct description) like a kid on a bar stool.  I might see if I can find a place offering rides in one nearby.

A true FAR 103-compliant ultralight would be an absolute blast!

Which thread?  I'd love to see pics after you're finished.

I plan to have a bar someday with at least a good sized print of De Lempicka's Autoportrait hanging nearby.

In-laws used to own a bowling alley and before they sold the property (hadn't been a functioning alley since 90s) I cut out one of the pin-setter sections (wood that has the dots on it).  It's about 8' by 4' and my plan is to use that as the main bar surface.  Won't be that art-decoey but I do dig the style.

We have several vacuum tube radios too. One next to the front door to catch our keys. Looks nice, is a Frankenstein radio with one brand cabinet and a later radio set inside. Incomplete. Will never work again.

The MMP thread, I think.  So far, it's just refinishing the pool table and getting all of my late husband's stuff cleared out of the room.  I do have a couple of nice vintage light fixtures to go up (or I will if USPS hasn't lost the box with the slip shades in it...grr), but I haven't put up any pictures yet.

I've been tossing around the idea of rebuilding ours but with modern parts, as the tube stuff is well fried.  It would have to be a total gut (I don't think it's even worth re-using the old speaker).  I think I could do up a simple circuit to light an LED in the back to simulate the bulb, but there's some kind of weird potentiometer/pulley system that controls where the needle shows the station on the radio.  I'd love to keep the needle moving, but think it depends on having a particular diameter of the pot shaft to work properly.

It's on my list, but pretty far down at this point.

There are specialists who can restore the original tube radio for a few hundred dollars. Speakers can be sent for repair too.

AM obviously works. SW works. Police band isn't used for police band anymore.

I have a modern AM transmitter that I pipe music or podcasts into and listen to via a vintage radio. Its fun. Pointless perhaps but fun.

I still enjoy my multiband radio in the evenings. It is about the the same age as I am and very expensive back in the day. I sit on the porch and wander up and down the dial and frequencies and land on whatever sounds interesting. Sub-$100 toy these days.

The antique radios can be surprisingly good recievers. And they can sound quite good for a single cone speaker.

I'm loving the radio ideas.  I have a mid-century record player that I've been using as a table below the TV because A.) I don't have that many records anymore and B.) I think the belt is stretched because the sound is badly distorted.  You guys have me thinking about how it could be turned into a giant soundbar for the TV.

You can buy that belt if you want to. I replaced the one on an older 1980s turntable. Wasn't expensive at all. If you can't find a supplier, holler and I'll dig for the website I used.

I was lusting after a new laptop because mine got damaged during travel and the charger port bore the brunt of it.

I was told it would need a new motherboard to fix the problem, which cost almost as much as replacing it, so I just kept using it with the janky charging port, frequently fighting with it to get it to charge, which was not optimal since I now take meetings on my laptop all day.

Anyhoo, I increasingly just wanted to replace it, but kept tolerating it.

Unfortunately/thankfully, the motherboard damage eventually got so severe that it stopped charging altogether, so now I have a new (refurbished) laptop!

So this doesn't quite belong in this thread, but I thought it would be funny to share.

What's also funny is that I was having unstable Internet for the last month and fighting with my service provider to fix it, and eventually even cancelled my service and started with a new company.

Turns out the connectivity problem was also the motherboard, lol.

Good old OSI Layer 1 problem.

I want a small, manual transmission project car. But for reasons I don't comprehend, they are more expensive on a bunch of sites than buying regular cars with automatic transmissions. Also, I don't know why I want a project car. I have enough stuff breaking around the home that keeps me busy.

On the bright side, I now have MUCH faster internet for only $4 more per month

They are the project cars that don't need a new transmission, so they're worth more.

Le Creuset. Anyone have a Dutch oven they no longer want? I have been listing after all the things.

I have a few and one is Le Creuset, and the main advantage over the cheaper options is that it's so much lighter, and I have joint injuries that make it hard to handle a huge heavy pot full of food.

Otherwise, my heavier enameled cast iron would be just as good.

Apparently the enamel on the cheaper ones can chip more easily, but the benefit is that because they're cheaper, I don't need them to last forever and ever, which means I'm okay putting them in the oven, which you aren't really supposed to do at higher temps with enameled cast iron.

So I wouldn't dare transfer my Le Creuset to the oven, but I don't think twice with my cheap one, I just get my DH to do the actual transfer so my wrists don't scream at me.

You will probably never find a used Le Creuset, but chances are you could easily find a used heavier enameled dutch oven for very, very cheap.

Thanks for sharing that article.  It very aptly describes so much of my experiences coding at all sorts of levels.  It doesn't seem to matter how helpful SDK developers try to be, I always end up diving into the source code at some point to figure out some sort of odd behavior.  Now I have a name to assign it.

There are some older ladies where it gets too heavy for them. I should ask around luxury retirement communities!

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
