There are some ebikes that look similar to dirt bikes, with fat tires and whatnot, at a lower price point. E.g. lectric bikes - this is what I have.

Not sure about the laws in Canada, but where I live people ride them on the bike paths all the time, and they don't require insurance or registration.

Of course - they only go 20 mph via throttle, so you likely won't be jumping hills like you would a dirt bike.

I suppose it depends on what you want to do with the dirt bike..

Nono, I mean  proper dirt bikes for going on trails, not an e-scooter shaped like a dirt bike. No one where I live in NL has those.

Also, I thought you left??

It wound up lasting one week. :p

Nice when you're at home in bed.  Creepy when you're walking home in the woods in the dark (and it gets dark early - like 5:00 in the winter).

Always weird to get those little reminders at how far north I live in northwest Washington.  Significantly north of nearly all of the population of eastern Canada.  We get dark between 4:15-4:30 for months.

I spent a couple years in St. Petersburg, Russia.  There were a few months where I only saw the sun briefly on weekends because during the week, I arrived at the office before the sun rose, and left after it had set.

Yeah, my one experience with truly 'far north' was a work trip to Sweden in late January.  Remember looking at the "high noon" sun that was not particularly far above the horizon.

Right? I feel like a lot of Canadians forget that many Americans live more north than A TON of Canadians because of our population distribution.

I'm currently more south than North Dakota and I'm not even in a place that's considered Southern.

Where I was in NE Newfoundland is considered pretty Northern for Eastern Canada and it's not much more north than where you are.

Yes, I grew up there and had a long bus ride home from school. I remember the sun would be setting a few stops before mine, at around 4:15.
I was always in a mad dash to do any sort of outdoors play before it was too dark.

I just looked it up and there are 38ish million Canadians, 70% of which live south of the northern border of Washington, and 50% of us living south of the southern border.

So y'all wildly outnumber us in terms of "living in the North" lol.

Evidently the northern border of Washington is at the 49th parallel and the most southern border of Canada is at the 41st parallel, which is about at the same level of the norther border of California.

As this article explains, most Canadians live south of Seattle
https://bigthink.com/strange-maps/canadians-south-seattle-mental-map-surprise/

So yeah, most Canadians don't actually live very "north" compared to the number of Americans who live as or more north than we do.

Previously, I had an old fashioned pressure cooker and loved it and used it a lot but then I tended to use my crockpot more so didn't use it much. But had to have the Instant pot and got a large one. For some reason, I really didn't like it and didn't use it. I love my crock pots so I decided to donate my Instant pot to Vietnam Veterans of America. The thing was only used a handful of times. So, I guess my point is, I lusted and caved in to my desires and it didn't make me happy in the end. Be careful of what you lust for because I have regrets!

With the bread maker, I keep telling myself I can make pizza dough but have not done so yet! Sigh!

Oh, I just remembered, I had to have a heavy duty stand mixer. I probably used it 3 times and it has been sitting on a shelf for about 25 years. I don't make cakes or anything to use it.

When I was fresh out of undergrad I had a roommate from London, ON and another from London, England.  We were all living in Northern New England.

The person from Ontario was the furthest south (by several hundred km) and the person from England was by far the furthest north. We  lived smack in the middle.

Another fun geographic factoid: six of Canada’s ten largest cities are further south than Seattle WA, including the two largest (Toronto and Montréal).

Were you on just a reserve then?  How did you end up there?  The res near our town was policed by the OPP detachment from the city.  My parents have some kind of scary stories about things that went on when they were teaching at a fly-in native reserve in Northern Alberta though.  Kinda the wild west up there.

It's also wild west in a lot of Newfoundland, I got pretty used to laws being suggestions out where I am over the summer. I grew up in Quebec, so policing there is also a little different than Ontario. Also, I did specify that I lived *near* a rez, not on one.

I really want to get a dirt bike in NL if my leg can ever handle it and that requires a full motorcycle license but literally no one in the area has a motorcycle license and literally almost every child over the age of 11 has their own dirt bike.

But I'm not quite willing to ride around on a bike uninsured like everyone else.

So that counts as a stupid thing I'm lusting after, a dirt bike that I can't even currently ride and that I'm almost tempted to not have licensed or insured, lol.

Almost, but not enough to ever do that.

@Metalcat
I'm lusting for a dirt bike for you.  Been riding since I was a kid.  It's one of my favorite things to do.  When we lived in the mountains, I rode all the time. There were miles of logging trails to explore about 15 minutes away.  Btw, I just returned from a motorcycle rally where I rode with a guy that came down from Canada.

I recently started training to fly paramotors.  They're sort of like dirt bikes of the sky.  Instead of foot launching, I'm using a trike, which helps prevent leg injuries.  (It seems foolish to run with a 70 lb motor strapped on your back.)  The whole rig packs down small enough to fit into a hatchback and costs about the same as a dirt bike.

That sounds very cool, but probably not safe with the winds where I am in the summer. Gale force winds come out of nowhere and I'm on a tiny island surrounded by freezing cold norther Atlantic ocean, so seems like a pretty reliable way to die unfortunately. But very cool for you!

As for a dirt bike, my leg will probably never be able to handle it anyway, so it's really an extremely unrealistic and dangerous thing to want. Which is why it's perfect for this thread.

I haven't been on any kind of motorcycle in years.

Would it have to be a dirt bike? Would a smaller motorcycle, or even a nice scooter (like 150cc), at least somewhat scratch that itch?

Can your leg handle riding an ATV or snowmobile?  Those are more stable than being on 2 wheels but offer access to the woods.  I didn't understand the appeal of ATVs until I finally tried them.  They aren't as quick or as nimble as dirt bikes, but having 4wd and a reverse gear is very empowering.  Their slower pace gives you more time to enjoy the scenery in detail.  We have a couple of older basic models, but the newer ones are available with automatic transmissions and power steering.  You might be able to find some to rent to see if you like them.

No options for renting, but yeah, I've considered an ATV, but they're much, much more expensive than dirt bikes and a lot bigger for hauling and storage. Plus I've worked on dirt bikes, I've never worked on ATVs, so there would be a maintenance learning curve there, which is fine. It's definitely an option, but the major downside is that I can't use an ATV as a road vehicle, but I can with a dirt bike.

Really, if my leg can handle it, a dirt bike is cheap, easy to maintain, small, and multi purpose. If my leg can't handle it, I'm probably just not going to buy a recreational vehicle at all.

Not for going on trails, no. I'm really fine not owning a recreational vehicle, there are just tons of cheap used dirt bikes for sale in the area all the time and I'm always like "aw...that would be fun." I'm barely even willing to get licensed in the province to be able to ride one.

ETA: if my leg never works properly, I can always buy the insane all terrain wheelchair I posted here earlier. He's dropped the price to 7K, lol.

Fixer upper real estate. Its stupid because we're trying to sell a fixer upper in the state we formerly lived in. I simultaneously hate and dream of owning cheap crappy homes.

I am still lusting after the Tesla model 3.

I'm never going to buy one. Instead I will just lust after it until the end of time or until I can buy a rebuilt one for 5k, whichever comes first.

I've used my bread machine about that many times.  I think I paid like $8 at the thrift store, so I don't feel too bad about it.  My KA mixer though, has it's own dedicated cabinet in my kitchen with appliance lift and built-in outlet.  I probably don't use it enough to justify the real estate that it's taking up, but I use it more now that it's just a matter of lifting it out of the cabinet instead of hauling it out from the top shelf.

I looove my breadmaker. I use it every few days.

For lunch we usually eat raw vegetables, hummus, hard boiled eggs, and toast. So the savings of using a bread machine are massive.

But...I HAD to have a bread machine and lusted after one. So, I bought one that was around $300 or more. I used it maybe 4 times in 3 years. UGH! It is huge, takes up too much space that I don't have the luxury of space. Then fast forward, I had to have an Instant pot.

My KA mixer lives out in the open on the countertop, and I use it at least once a week for baking, plus I have the peeler/spiralizer attachment. If I had to lift that thing off a shelf or cabinet, I'd use it approximately never. I've never felt the need for a separate breadmaker, though, as I make our bread in the mixer and just bake in the oven.

I'm lusting after a robotic vacuum. We have all hardwood on the first floor, and I know dust is accumulating in corners and under furniture, but I just can't manage to vacuum often enough to prevent it. Would have to be one of the heavy duty ones to handle pet hair, though, and I can't bring myself to spend that kind of money on a gadget.

I've had an iLife robot vacuum that has been going strong for several years and cost less than $200 on sale. It seems to handle hair just fine.

I have serious allergies and running it every day makes a huge difference.

Hm, maybe something to consider for Christmas then... I just know that keeping the house clean is going to drop entirely off the priority list once we have this baby, so outsourcing to a robot doesn't seem like that stupid an idea. Is the iLife brand internet/phone connected? DH might veto if it is. From an IT security standpoint, he despises the IOT trend.

Nope, it's cheap and simple. No high tech features, no learning the layout of your house. Just a self propelling vacuum with preprogrammed patterns.

Excellent, time for some research. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction! If I can find one for that good a price, I think I can justify it as an early Christmas gift to ourselves.

We need to try one.  Do people usually buy one for each floor, or can you just carry it upstairs or downstairs to do the other levels occasionally?

I don't suppose they've invented a flying version to dust cobwebs yet?

I'm something of a robovac connoisseur..haha.  Seriously though...I have tried many brands over the years.

My current favorite is the Roborock Q5.  I picked up a refurb for $215 after a coupon deal they had...my unit looks brand new.

   https://www.ebay.com/itm/404164949018
   https://www.amazon.com/Roborock-Q5-Upgraded-Navigation-Multi-Level/dp/B09N3JKFFY/?th=1

This is an amazing robovac for the money.  Performs extremely well...and has multi-floor mapping capability, etc...

If interested, watch the deals sites ( slickdeals, etc.. ) over the coming weeks for deals.

When I had two floors I just ran it on each floor on alternating days.

What do you think of the Q7 Max with the automatic dust cleaner and water tank?  The robot mop has been on my list of things I want lately and it's currently the lowest that I've ever seen it on Amazon.

Robot mops don't mop, at least not the ones I've seen. They just run a small, soggy cloth along the floor. My vacuum "mops" and I ran it once and never bothered again.

I agree.  In general, I'm not a fan of robomops...especially vacuum/mop combos.

The only robomop that has worked out for us has been the iRobot Braava line.  We have the Braava 240 that has been chugging along for a long time, and it works great.  However, we only use it in smaller spaces like bathrooms.

Grocery shopping at Costco today (I made a list! lol) I saw an infrared heater for $79; I wanted it so I can sit warmly in my sun porch now that it's getting cold.

I resisted.

Because of the disparity of my finances and those of friends and family; I buy myself a* Christmas present every year  (* = one big or a couple~few small).
I started shopping for this yrs gift.  I looked into a helicopter flight sim for my PC - very reasonable (there's even a free one available), except I would have to buy pedals and a cyclic controller - making it not reasonable.
So I looked at airplane flight sims.  A good (high rated) joystick is <$40.   Which means I could buy a curved monitor...

Just cost out the payback period.  What's the cost of buying the fruit at the store, how much of the fruit do you eat, how much fruit will the tree produce?  Then figure out the number of years to break even.

Let's see...my satsuma tree has produced 5 edible satsumas in 6 years but I got it for free with a blood donation so it's cost me 100 ml of blood per fruit.  Is that a good deal?

It’s generally understood that any deal which requires a pound of flesh is very bad for the donor.
You paid about a quarter of a pound, so 1/4 as bad as something which required a pound of flesh (in my view).

Does that help with your accounting?

That assumes that you consider blood to be flesh though...

I got smashed in the face a couple nights ago at Jiu-Jitsu and traded a couple hundred mL of blood for nothing at all, so I think you're coming out ahead.
