What's the most mileage you've ever put on a car?
« on: April 01, 2018, 03:45:32 PM »
I am at about 150K with my 2003 VW (bought with 17K on it).  I had a colleague who had 400K in his Toyota truck (of course, he's a great home mechanic and has replaced the engine & transmission on his own!)  I find it an amazing fount of cheapo love to drive a car until it falls apart (although for my car, it seems that every few thousand miles it's another $200 repair bill).  Its being in "rough" condition gives it a trade-in value of $250, LOL.

I did something that even few Mustachians will do: rolled over a car's odometer. (It was a 1959 220S Mercedes with only a 5 digit odometer, but still...)

I ran a Mercedes E300 diesel to 216K before New England tin-worm did it in.
I bought my wife's Honda CR-V with 168K on it (now has 198K and still going strong).

85 Saab 900s. End of the road when I wrecked the transmission pretending to be a rally driver at 320k.

I bought my current car used with 31,000 miles back in 2010. It just hit 181,000 on the odometer. So 150,000 in about 7.5 years.

I drive a lot.

Back in the day, we had some cars with pretty iffy odometers. ;-)

Some years ago, we passed our Toyota Yaris on to our grown kids, and it now has 250,000 miles on it.

I got 235,000 miles out of a Ford Explorer. Started using synthetic oil at 85,000 miles. The manual transmission toasted on a Friday driving home from work. Had a new (used - new to me) car in the driveway by Sunday since I had been saving for the next car for some time.

2005 Honda Civic - 200k.

Bought for 5k in 2014 @ 100k miles. No non-routine maintenance; have probably spent $2k total over 4 years.

My goal is over 250k, and by 300k to get a new, electric truck (by 2025). Hopefully something like the Tacoma is today--light, but useful/fun.

This is NOT purely mustachian, but my idea is this--it will be my daily driver. It's just slightly larger and with a bed for sports that make me happy. My idea is that it IS mustachian because owning one car is better for the environment than 2. Some would buy a daily driver (car) and a recreation vehicle for the weekends (SUV or truck). I would be fine owning one car, using it less (of course), but having that one vehicle be a truck.

I am counting on some battery breakthroughs to happen between now and then, as is all of humanity.

For my work vans I always buy cheap ones. I buy them for $1300-$2000.... drive them for about 2 years and sell it for the same amount I bought it for. High mileage, regular oil..... never have to replace tires or anything. Buy it.... drive it.... sell it. Bought one for $1300 right at 2 years ago, about to put it on Craigslist for $1500. It has right at 200,000. I'm not too caught up in the mileage, my goal is to not spend money to replace anything and sell it around the 2 year mark. I always buy them with new tires so they last the whole time I drive it.

1994 Toyota Corolla
Sold it in 2012 with just over 300,000 kms on it.

Currently driving a 2005 Yaris into the ground. (Hopefully we'll get another 5-6 years out of her.)

How about what is the least mileage?  Driving is bad for you and bad for the environment, so it should be vastly minimized.

I bought a new Lexus in 2003.  I sold it 39 months later, in 2006, with 6,000 miles.

I'm driving around in an old 2004 Honda Civic with well over 200k miles. Sometimes I feel like it's just unsafe. There have been a lot of advancements in vehicle safety since 2004 and I wish I had a newer car just for the safety aspects.

In '86 I bought a 1973 Porsche 911S with 60,000 miles on it.  I sold it in 2005 after putting an additional 220,000 on it. I paid $12K for it and sold it for $62.5K.  Thought I hit a home run until 8 years later when I saw the guy who bought it from me sell it for $214,000.  Damn. Damn. Damn.

Really? Why would you even own a car if you only drive 6k miles over 3 years? Especially with a new car, there's no way that made financial sense with the hard costs of insurance & depreciation (sold for less than you purchased), as well as the soft costs like storage, worry & stress about accidents/dents/scratches, etc.

current car bought new, 15 years old, 235K  (roughly 146K miles), still going strong, I'm driving it 'till the wheels come off, although with Canadian winters, the rust will get her before the engine fails (Subaru)
previous car bought new, sold at 12 years old, 255K (158K miles).

I bought a little Toyota truck new in the mid 1990s and put ~200K on it, never had to have much done to -- I think I replaced the alternator once, and had the clutch replaced once.  I know the person who owns it now, and it's still running fine.

325K on a Honda. Last saw it with north of 365K as I recall. Have put 225K+ on alot of old vehicles. Pretty easy if rust isn't a factor. Durability is a big factor for me at purchase time.

As our finances continue to improve in our middle years I'm gradually shifting from drive it into the ground to drive it to some high mileage and replace it before it needs alot of repairs. I don't mind doing the work myself but I find myself less attached to a vehicle "forever". That said we recently DIY replaced an engine in one of our cars to keep it several more years.

Our 2003 Toyota Corolla has 165,000 miles on it, and at our rate of driving, we'll hit 200k in 2026.  We'll see if we make it that long.

My 2004 Nissan Altima has over 200,000 miles on it and still runs great. I am not looking at it now, so I don't know the exact mileage but I think it's around 215,000 now. My husband's 2001 Ford F150 truck has more than 300,000 miles on it and also still runs great. I think he's around 320,000 on it currently. He has replaced some different parts in the engine over the years but for the most part hasn't had to do too much work on it. We've never really had to do any major work on either of our vehicles, just keep up with the routine maintenance. He does most our vehicle maintenance including oil changes, etc. at home.

When ecology auto wrecking came to take away my first car, a 1986 Dodge Omni, it had over 330,000 miles on it.  I didn't put most of those miles on - my parents did and they passed the car down to me in college.  I drove it for another 4 years before giving it up.  Nowadays I might have tried to work more to fix it - the engine seemed pretty good, actually, but the doors didn't open or close properly and it was a little freaky driving it with the drivers door stuck a few inches open.

I'm still with my Toyota Prius, the only car I've ever purchased.  It's 13 years old and at just over 195k.  Not sure when it'll hit 200k because I hardly drive anymore, now that I live in a place with decent public transportation and no place to park if you do drive anywhere.  So we mostly use it on the weekends, and are hoping it lasts a nice long time.  It's been a great car!

We never get too high a mileage before we end up with a lot of repairs. We only own one car but do mostly town driving (lots of stop signs, short trips, etc.) to run the kids to school/daycare and DH to work. Put roughly 6K miles on a year. I think our last car was at around 115K miles before we gave up trying to figure out what was wrong. We'd put about $2500 in repairs into it over a 3 month time span and the mechanics still couldn't figure out why it wouldn't start reliably and had a weird issue at stop signs.

We just buy about 2 year old cars and run them until the repairs add up to too much before replacing. We are hoping to keep our current car running for the next 6 years and then pass it down to our oldest as his first driver. At our rate it should have right near 100k miles by then. :)

A couple years ago I sold my 88 4Runner with 385,000 Miles. Still got $3,500 for it.

I sold my motorcycle with 186,000 miles on it as well. It still has a lot of life in it for the guy who got it.

My current vehicle is a 22 year old Toyota pickup with 210,000 miles and I hope to keep it for the next 10 years as long as I have a place to park it.

I am a decent home mechanic and like to take good care of my things so they last a while. I think with the right preventative maintenance it shouldn’t be surprising for any car still rolling today to make it to 250,000+ miles.

I’m also curious. Although this habit meant that we were able to replace our 12-year-old Taurus (181,000 miles) with my mother-in-law’s Impala, which pretty much only left the garage a few times a year when my father-in-law took it out (he has his own SUV). After 14 years, the car had 30,000 miles on it. Mother-in-law never drives and rarely leaves the house, so I’m guessing her shiny new car will be our next car in a decade or so, once the Impala or my Prius goes. Or maybe we’ll have a one-car lifestyle by then.

We sold our Taurus to a friend’s college-age kid. Apparently, it’s still running well.

1991 Chevy 1500 4x4 Pickup - bought it with 110,000 miles and sold it with 465,000 miles.  I know this is hard to believe but the only things I had to replace beyond regular maintenance was rear seal, 4wd solenoid and a muffler.  I still can't believe it.

289,000 on my current primary daily driver 1991 Toyota MR2.  Back in the day I used to do around 25,000 a year on this car, but as of a few years ago I greatly decreased my driving.  Now it's down to around 4,000 a year on that car.  With another 2,500 a year or so going onto my 135,000 mile 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse and roughly another 500 miles a year now going onto my 14,000 mile 1994 Suzuki Katana...

Just paid for my yearly registration today.  If one of my cars burst into flame and burned to the ground I would not replace it...  However, registration and insurance is still cheap enough that I don't feel any rush to sell one either (it is kind of handy having a spare available even though I could pay for a rental for 3-4 weeks for the same amount it costs to own a second car).

We're over 230k miles on a 2005 Prius and still going strong. Bought it 4.5 years ago with 100k miles for $7k. Best car purchase we've ever made. It's only needed one small repair (which the husband was able to do in about 30 minutes) since we bought it.
