What's in your (bike) garage?
« on: May 19, 2015, 08:17:16 AM »
Pardon if there is already a thread on this, I did search first. :)

Since a lot of us are very into biking, it'd be interesting to see what everyone is riding. Me:

Motobecane Phantom Cross Pro Titanium (longest bike name evah!)-This is my workhorse. Commute, store trips, errands and out the front door fun rides. Looks like a roadie but disc brakes and wider knobby tires.

Santa Cruz 5010-My play bike, it does double duty as a park bike (jumps, drops, wood, etc.) and cross country riding. Absolutely love this bike, I bought a packaged deal on heavy discount and sold, swapped and built it up the way I like it. 1x10 shifting, dropper post and great suspension. It rips as hard as I can manage.

On One Inbred-Biking purity. Single speed, no suspension. Only controls you've got are brakes. This was a wheelset and some other parts from an old bike that was sitting in the garage so I looked around for a cheap frame. The frame is actually just a little small for me, but the wifey tried it and ended up taking it. Now she's riding it all over town and lovin it!

Ummm, an old "Concord" 5 speed Mountain Bike that's my around town/Winter beater.  A CAAD7 frame Cannondale from back in the day, built this one up myself out of parts.  Mostly Shimano, but some Bontrager.  Rarely gets used as it has speedplay pedals on it which are terribly inconvenient for commuting.  Just goes out a couple times a year for the rare long ride for no reason.  Also I've got some unidentified Cannondale that my wife bought and won't ride anymore after her last crash a few years ago (which left her with a broken collarbone that troubles her with continual pain to this day).  Kind of small framed for me, but it has combo pedals, so I use it for beating around town in the Summer (we tried to sell, but didn't get so much as a nibble, so ended up keeping it).

Oh, yes! :)

1)Rawland cSogn: 650b all-rounder, road-centered build with Hetres, front and rear racks, boxy rando bag, Noodles, Suntour drivetrain, dynamo lighting. If I could only keep one bike, this would be it.

2)Vendetta custom - third owner (secondhand customs are a great deal if they fit you), built up with parts (a lot of 8s Dura-Ace) that I had taken off a Bottecchia frame I sold. Got it perfect when I replaced the 700c wheels (no clearance for >23mm tires with fenders) with lightweight 650b wheels. This is my sports-car bike and is a joy to ride. I tried commuting on it with a rack, but it didn't like weight so I gave that up.

3)Kogswell D - this is my parts-bin bike. I had a bike's worth of parts lying around and decided to build a bike that sort of split the difference between the above two - light and springy like the Vendetta, commutable like the Rawland and clearance for 33mm tires with fenders (I don't ride bikes without fenders). Not enough clearance at the fork crown to fit the tab for my front rack in there, but otherwise almost perfect for what I wanted.

4)Raleigh One Way - set up as a sit-up / just-riding-around bike, also my primary winter beater/salt bike (though I ride the Rawland in the winter, too.) Fenders, rear rack, dynamo lighting, front rack with basket, Albatross bars, kickstand, chain guard, etc.

5)Bridgestone MB-4 - my mountain bike, which I've had for a bit over 20 years. I'm stuck in the late 80s and early 90s when it comes to my tastes in MTBs (I started riding in the late 80s). Currently torn down for a restoration, since it was thrashed. I have an MB-3 to ride in the meantime.

6)Trek 750 - I just built this up to give to my girlfriend. Touring-ish wheelset I got from a friend, stock Suntour drivetrain bits, single ring in front, drop bars, rack, fenders, lighting.

I have a Trek7.3FX WSD (aka "girl version") I bought new six years ago, which has served me well. It's a standard aluminum commuter hybrid.

Right now, though, I'm mostly riding a new-to-me Pashley Princess Sovereign edition that I bought used off craigslist. It's all-steel, made in England, with a 5-speed Sturmey-Archer hub, hub brakes, a nice dynamo, Brooks saddle, steel fenders, Pletscher rack and wicker basket on the front. I have dubbed it the H.M.S. Rob Thomas, because of its English origins, the fact that it is the size of and handles like a boat, and because it's soooooo smooth.

2014 Specialized Sirrus Sport got it on special and used a groupon. about 1000 miles on it right now and It will be 1 year of me owning it in June.

A Japanese road bike ANT(Star)RES I got from a friend for $50 he didn't want to do the tune up and I wanted a faster road bike.

The girlfriend has

Trek Lexa latest model she loves this bike more then me.

Trek 7.3 older model for winter and rain.

I'm looking for a deal on a mountain bike so I can get back into the hobby. I used to go every weekend and some days after work. It was pretty much free after the cost of the bike.

The fleet:

1. Garneau Sonix 6.4. My daily commuter. It's a delicate flower, but so, so fast.
2. Early 90's Norco hardtail mountain bike. 26" wheels. Shot bottom bracket. Used for running errands in the neighbourhood (no one will steal it), pulling the grocery trailer or pulling kid #2 on her trail-a-bike
3. Ancient Adam's trail-a-bike
4. 20" Schwinn kids mountain bike, belongs to kid #1
5. 18" kids cruiser, belongs to kid #2
6. 24" department store comfort bike. Bought used for $20, in great shape and will be passed on to kid #1 shortly.
7. DH's electric comfort bike.
8. Really old beat up kids bike trailer with 2 rubbermaid totes stuffed in it. Used for groceries or other utility hauling.

Travel bike: old Sampson titanium frame, chopped in two and S&S couplers installed by Bilenky.  This photo was taken before the couplers were installed but I included it for obvious reasons.  :-)

The Ten Dolla Schwinn: bought this as a rusty hulk from a CL ad; powdercoated, dyno hub, racks, stainless fenders.  My commuter and touring rig.

Race rig, Van Dessel team frame, miscellaneous parts from all over:

There are more but I don't want to embarrass myself.

I was big into mountain biking as a kid/teen, and always had pretty low-end bikes and equipment.  I always wanted a nicer, higher-end bike.  So with one of my first paychecks in the working world, I went out and bought something I would've been ecstatic with as a kid, a high-end Cannondale hardtail, disc brakes, HeadShok suspension, etc etc etc.   Was around $1k at the time.  I actually used it quite a bit when I lived up and down the east coast with easy access to good MTB trails.

Now I live in suburbia, no good trails around.  I swapped the knobbies for slicks, the narrow seat for a cushier seat, and am even thinking about a less agressive stem and removing the clipless pedals.  A couple weeks ago for Mother's Day we got my wife a nice Cannondale cruiser and we bought a trailer for our daughter.  Lots of parks in our new town to ride to.

1) Lemond Poprad Cyclocross that I mainly keep road tires on for commuting and road riding.
2) WaltWorks full rigid 29er
3) Devinci Atlas
4) Motobecane Fly Ti 29 -- I swap parts between the WW and this frame depending on what I want to ride
5) IRD Mountain Tempest
6) Turner Burner frame that I've tried to sell and may just end up keeping for my son when his big enough

Surly cross-check: currently used recreationally as a road bike, in the past when I had a longer commute has been my commuter

1978 Schwinn breeze: short distance commuter, all set up for nightime, carrying stuff, and rain with dynamo lights, front drum brake, and a rack and folding baskets.

xtracycled mountain bike: commuter and cargo hauler.  I currently have rack attachments capable of carrying another bike, skis, or an adult passenger.  I'm in the process of putting dynamo lights on it.

I have a Kona cindercone that I found used about 6 years ago.  I have put 4-5000 km since then.  I recently was given a late 80's Giant from a friend, that did not want to tune it up.  I have fixed it and it is my winter bike now.

I would like to find a nice road bike, but have not found one used for the right price.

1991 Specialized Epic Stumpjumper (bought it new with some insurance money at the time) - one of the first carbon fiber mountain bikes (straight carbon tubes with chromoly lugs).  It's my townie bike for errands and biking to work.  I have a couple non-mustachian bikes too...

We mostly ride tandems.
We have a Cannondale RT1000 (main rider), Bike Friday Tandem Tuesday (travel) and Burley Samba (second home bike)
I have a Specialized Tarmac Pro and a nameless beater.

All of were purchased off craigslist and were all less than 1/2 the cost of the original purchase price.

There is a thread, though it's a bit buried. I'm still riding the same beautiful red machine I posted there, and we'll see how it takes over the daily commute in August...

What a timely thread...I just finished building my latest one last night and took it for it's inaugural ride this morning to work.

1) 2013 Cannondale SuperSix - fast

2) 2011 Salsa El Mariachi - fun

3) 2014 Surly Cross Check (just built) - practical

Note sure what i will build next - maybe a Surly ECR to do more bikepacking (i use the el mar for that now)...or a Van Dessel WFT just for grins.  Also searching for a cross check or vaya frame for my wife, but she's tiny, used ones dont come up often in her size.

Me: trek lexa, is my road bike / race bike
Mec Chance (I know lots of people love to hate mec bikes...) this is my workhorse, commuter and winter          bike, it does most things well! And is set up to pull a trailer and have a rear child seat.

DH: a diva igh commuter, and mec road bike so he can keep up on road rides..

Shared: extracycle edgrunner, workhorse #2 and we love it! Carries groceries and the munchkin!

Dd: strider

And we have a few old bikes that we will probably donate to the local bikes for kids charity, other than that I have a serious case of n+1 syndrome with a long wish list!

I've had a Beta 525 RR for a while now but I'm pretty excited about the KTM 300 EXC I just added! What a crazy bike! Nothing like a 2 stroke.

That's the kind of bike you meant, right? :D

My main commuter bike is a 2011 Avanti Discovery 1.0. I've fitted it with a rack and panniers and lights and it's quite a good commuter, and goes alright for a fun ride as well. After growing up riding shitty department store mountain bikes that never got maintained, this is a revelation in comparison.

I also have a shitty old eBay mountain bike of indeterminate age and origin (I would have a guess at early-mid 1990's, department store quality). It's a pig to ride, even after I swapped the knobblies for slicker tyres. Bought it for $30 (actually bought two bikes but decided to keep the MTB, dumb move tbh) and rode it around for a little while locally before I decided it was time to upgrade. My brother's currently using it.

What other bikes do I want? I would like a road bike (the Avanti isn't the fastest, but that's probably more due to the rider), a decent hardtail MTB, and an electric bike and I admit I quite like the classic vintage style bikes as well.

The realities of living in a small apartment mean that I need to keep my n+1 lust in check (says he with the Papillionaire (and Electra) pages open in my browser) :)

My bike garage is definitely not mustachian.

Road bike: Fuji SST

Mountain bike: Foundry Broadaxe

And my Kona Jake the Snake. The bike I ride the most. My commuter bike. My cyclocross racing bike. My winter bike. The bike I take on gravel and dirt roads. Also, my cheapest bike.

I have a Trek 7.2 for commuting and touring (took it on a loop around Lake Ontario last September)

And a Montague Paratrooper Folding Bike. (since Amtrak is practically worthless for transporting regular bikes) that I am going to ride from DC to Pittsburgh along the C&O Towpath and GAP next month

Surly Long Haul Trucker - touring, all around, hauling stuff with racks or bob yak trailer
Yeti SB95 - mountain rig
Trek Farley - fatbike; snow riding
Kona Jake the Snake - fastest current on road bike and can do some some offroad
Redline Monocog - 29inch rigid single speed; town/gym bike.  Will lock up anywhere

Bikes are my one indulgence.  Probably trade the Kona and get a proper road bike soonish.

Wife has an older Jake the Snake and a Specialized Enduro that I bought her prior to marriage.

I posted in the older thread grantmeaname linked above, but I'll list here:

Me: 11 year old Trek FX, mixture of parts, but mostly Shimano Deore/LX. Biggest replacement parts I've installed were Vuelta Corsa HD wheels -->excellent, inexpensive wheels for riders who are either heavy or who ride with heavy loads (semi-regularly have at least 300 LBS on the bike including myself).

Wife: a rarely ridden Giant Escape 3.

Kids: a meh Pacific 5 speed with 20" wheels, a pretty sweet aluminum frame Marin 7-speed 20" wheels, a WeeRide Co-Pilot trail-a-bike. Also have two shitty department store bikes (one 16" and one 18") from before I knew what I was doing.

Next purchase will be either a 24" or a small-frame 26" or 700C bike for my oldest, who's only got 1 more year tops on her bike. I'd love a nicer touring bike eventually but my FX is set up pretty comfortably for everything from loaded urban riding to 50 mile rides.

I also get somewhat frequent use of an old Burley trailer. The hard plastic tub can hold an impressive amount of cargo - much, much more functional than the swankier 100lb max weight rated canvas trailers everyone is making nowadays.

What sort of bags do you have on the LHT? I've been looking around for grocery bags but I can't find anything that people seem to really like. I'd rather not shell out for a pair of Ortleibs if I'm just going to be using them for fair-weather grocery-getting.

Couldn't help but note the reference to the GAP; we did the GAP (Great Allegheny Passage) trail ride last Fall, as an exclamation point to our earlier-in-the-Summer ride from Philadelphia to Somerset (near where we got on the GAP).  It was a fun ride, though mostly for the ridiculously entertaining people watching of that many people out on bikes.  Mind, the entire earlier 200 miles across the state, we saw one (count em, ONE) cyclist.  I hope you enjoy it.  Trail riding is a little dull to me, but the amenities being right along the trail was a nice change for Pennsylvania and this part of the country generally.

That aside, I have an embarrassing number of bikes - but the ones I use most are my twenty year+ old Cannondale touring bike (all around town, touring, etc.), my used Cannondale mountain bike (for mtn biking, duh), my Trek super lightweight road bike for speedy rides with the athletic crowd, my Brompton folder for certain kinds of travel, and my recumbent Cattrike for a rockin' good time on country road rides.
