Were you filmed for Playing with FIRE?
« on: July 30, 2019, 09:46:08 PM »
I finally saw Playing with FIRE tonight and spotted @arebelspy at Camp Mustache. There was a flight attendant there, was that @MissNancyPryor ?? There was a married couple, the wife had short hair and I think the husband spoke. Do they post here?  Anyone else care to say who they or others were if they were in the film?

Good eye.

I know a number of people in it, but I'll let them out themselves if they want to connect faces to screen names. :)

I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.
If you want to know more about me, this Business Insider profile tells the story pretty well.
I (rarely) blog at AdventuringAlong.com. Check out the Now page to see what I'm up to currently.

what did you think of the documentary?  I was really excited for it but I wasn't able to make it to the local screening, haven't really heard much about it since.

I really enjoyed it! Lots of interviews with prominent writers in the field (I kept whispering "OMG it's so and so!" to my DH)... It showed the struggle of a family transitioning from a traditional spendy pants lifestyle to a FIRE budget. I used to be a spendy pants and it took me a long time to finally rid myself of those feelings, so it resonated with me. It's a great introduction to the concept, has a nice story and has some fun chats for us FIRE fan girls and fan boys.

I"ve seen criticisms that they follow a family who doesn't achieve FIRE by the end of the film. This is true. I think the choice of the subjects makes it more accessible to normal people. We're already geeking out on this board and listening to podcasts. I do personally wish that they'd chosen at least one more FIREee who's retired to discuss their journey in more detail so it could have been compared and contrasted against the family just starting out.

Oh cool! I found myself wondering when these people were talking about teachers’ salaries, but I wasn’t sure. Hi! :)

I will never win any beauty awards but I consider myself a step up from someone who described herself yesterday on another thread as “as ugly as a bag of hammers”. I can’t remember who posted that but it made me laugh.

That was @TheGrimSqueaker who is actually very pretty (saw the photos of the very long hair donation) and of course funny as hell.

I haven't seen the film yet but looking forward to it. As a person who is already FIREd I'm kind of curious about how it ends (eek! Don't tell me!). Oh and who is in it too.
:)
Yes, she is hilarious! Thanks for the clarification.

Lol, we recently did a Youtube piece about FIRE, and learned from the comments that apparently we're also in the "extremely ugly" category - though I could probably do a bit better if I were to learn/use makeup and hair stuff, which I just can't be bothered with.

Really enjoyed that video, it was great.  I personally think "Playing with Fire" would have been 10 times better if it documented a couple such as yourselves.

YouTube commenters are the worst. I thought you both were very cute! I’m also a freelance editor so I felt a kinship with your partner. :)

Oh boy, people would have really thought FIRE people are nuts if they had. "We're going to the tofu factory to get wonky-shaped tofu for 50% cheaper, and then heading into the woods with a compass and map to go labyrinth hunting!" And somewhere in there I'd dance ballet in our 400 square foot apartment, and my partner would show off his custom eye pillows. And my cat would be sharing his neon pink stroller with a 20lb sack of flour.

Just watched.  You guys were perfect.   You're young, cute and smart.  You don't need to change a thing.  Good luck in your journey.
