Weekly/monthly mustachian digest?
« on: December 01, 2012, 08:08:54 AM »
Posting here in the hope of reaching a maximum of readers. Mods, please move elsewhere if more appropriate. :)

In the past few months I have tried to cut down on the amount of articles I read online, on any subject. While you can argue they make you a better and more informed person, the truth is that they can be a huge time sink.

I work in tech, and tech people are notoriously famous for being over-enthusiastic about their latest toys. You could be reading tech news site all day and still manage to miss important things, so people came up with neat digest emails for busy people. It's usually a mixture of news and thought-provoking articles. Do you think a mustachian digest could be of interest? I originally envisioned it as a mix of links to interesting articles, cool DIY projects, and possibly discussion threads.

I believe a monthly email would be more appropriate because frankly, it'd be hard to come up with enough worthy material every single week. People can also send in their suggestions for an article they found and believe it should be featured in the following edition.

What do you think?

PS. If you'd like to offer a helping hand, feel free to respond in this thread, or shoot me a PM.

That's a really good idea. Seems like it would be a lot of work to put together, though.

If you launch it, you should do so in conjunction with a "Waste less time on the 'tubes" Throw Down The Gauntlet.

Earlier today I was hoping to sign up for MailChimp's free tier service- they let you send emails for free if you have less than 2,000 subscribers. Alas, due to a SPAM bill enacted by Congress, there is no way to send anything without:

- my real name (completely off the table)
- a physical address, or PO box.

So there is that. Not sure what the penalties are for lying on the form or even how they'd find out, but being in the US on a work visa, I'd rather not take any chances with The Law. I'm a programmer, dammit! How hard can sending emails be?

Will update this thread when/if I find a solution.

If it's the CAN-SPAM act of 2003, I think that doesn't apply to subscriber mailing lists.

If there was enough interest we could ask MMM to set up a phplist server, or we could set one up on our own. I have enough interest to build a digest every few months.

What about posting the digest on the forum, where people could subscribe via the "Notify" button?

Dang. That's a bug with the service I use. Reported it to them. Hopefully they fix it soon.
