Wanted to share - we pulled the plug, no going back!
« on: October 29, 2014, 07:11:17 AM »
Well, I finally did it and turned in my notice!  Less than two weeks from now and my wife and I will be officially FIRE'd.  It feels strange to voluntarily step off of the wheel and know that we are now on our financial own but from now on there will be no more trading time for money, no more work "fire drills" and no more BS emails requesting some inane meeting.  Time to change direction!

Congratulations!  I had a shitty day at work yesterday and wanted to quit.  Can't quite yet.  416 days.

You must feel fantastic.  No more inane meetings!

Congratulations!!! What are your immediate plans?

We're moving out to Bend, OR next month as we love all the outdoor activities available there and the weather.  So when I am not biking, boarding or rock climbing, I plan on volunteering and really getting involved in the community.

Good luck with the move!  Enjoy your new freedom- it sounds wonderful.  I bet you'll be able to make a positive impact on your community as well.  May it be smooth sailing.

That's terrific - I'm very happy for you.  It takes a lot of courage to finally quit, even when you know perfectly well you can.  I should know -- I haven't worked up enough myself yet, but I'm getting close.

Have fun exploring the world outside of the office!

Yep.  I feel this way too.  Nearly quit in the middle of the night because I was so fed up and couldn't sleep.

Good luck with the move!

It takes a lot of courage to finally quit, even when you know perfectly well you can.

It helped that a huge, high visibility, soul-sucking project is starting up very soon and I wanted no part of that.

Includes vacation days.  :)  I went to bed last night and wondered if I would make it that long.

Wow, you are making me wonder when I will have the courage to do the same thing. I know intellectually I could, but I haven't got the nerve to do it yet. I wonder if at some point I will wake up and say, "Time for a change,"

I thought this was going to be a thread about dealing with infirm elders.

Heh.  Heh.  And another heh for good measure.

Completely get it - must be an awesome relief to have that be NotYourProblem.

You will find that volunteers are treated with more respect than paid workers.  "Inane meetings" are less frequent and people are genuinely glad to see you.

When I retire, I'm gonna find some old people who need help with their house and some transportation and cut out the middle man volunteer organization.   Just me and granny painting walls, planting flowers and driving to the grocery store!

Damn, bro, I'm jealous!  I partake in all the same activities (and am in the same city)!  Oregon is beautiful.  Best of luck!

You are a saint! There are a couple people like this in my grandmother's community, and we try to help out the older lady in our neighborhood with snow, equipment repair, etc.  It pays it forward a little bit.  I will tell you that my grandma is so grateful to those people who help her with some of the things she cannot do any longer!

That's what I thought too.  I was going to congratulate them on pulling the cable plug, then inform them they can still call the cable company and have it reinstalled.

This news is even better though.  Congrats.

Not at all.  I suffered through a PhD, married well (my wife is a fellow PhD who is also non-materialistic) got well paying jobs in industry, lived on 30-50% of our take home and invested in rentals.  Done in 8 yrs, 11 if counting post-doc!)

Thanks Dude!  I'll miss riding in 'Nam (locals know what I mean), Lynn and B&Ts  but Smith Rock should be an easy replacement of Rumney!

Thanks All.  Will do - packing up now, wrapping up loose ends at work and then we...are... gone!  So excited for the change!

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
