Vehicle issues for a family of 6
« on: May 05, 2015, 01:56:14 PM »
Our minivan is at 166,000 miles and is 11 years old.  We have 4 kids and two big dogs.  We bought it brand new and have consistently put 15,000 miles on it a year (I know that isn't advocated here but we are a homeschooling family and that is our vacations to visit family and friends).  We have done many many road trips and all our family lives 2 hours from us.  We love our van.  That said it needs $4,000 worth of work that we don't know how to do ourselves and the transmission is making some noises but nothing can be found wrong at this time.  If the transmission goes then that would be close to $8,000!!  What should we do?  If I could fit us all into a Honda Fit, then I would get a used one and drive it for a bit until I save up some more money.  Can you put a kid in the front seat of a Fit?  Does the airbag turn off?  We love to camp and haul our bikes out of state with our minivan.  Any thoughts?  We have had NO problems other than wear and tear on our van.  I know we shouldn't buy new but part of me loves to know exactly how it is maintained and then drive it as long as possible.  I often go on long road trips with the kids and we have a big one planned this summer.  Trying to decide the right thing to do.

My opinions, not as a qualified mechanic:

If you have an automatic transmission, and nothing wrong can be found, and you're on top of maintenance (replacing ATF, inspections), drive the van until the tranny breaks or starts slipping, then trash the van. Automatic transmissions are basically black magic. You can buy remanufactured ones from the factory, but I would never trust any shop - independent or dealer - to fix the internals of an automatic transmission unless you have absolutely no choice. Most fixes to one are temporary at best, and the thing starts dying soon after. The only exceptions are certain models that are relatively repairable, coupled with very obvious problems (clutch rings wearing off their friction-y material, that sort of thing, which is obvious to eyesight and doesn't need special diagnostics.)

Can you put a kid in the front seat of a Fit? Depends on their age (really, their size.) If they approach adult-sized, sure. If not, no. No, you can't go turning off fucking airbags, that's not okay. Your kid is not going to be better off without an airbag, you're just trading one harm for another.

Buying new vs used is an age-old argument. If you plan on buying a relatively inexpensive, reliable model used, and driving it into the ground over the course of 10+ years, it becomes a much closer decision. Especially if you live in an area where weather doesn't ruin cars. Depending on where you live and what you're looking for, you might find the depreciation on currently for sale used minivans to be not nearly enough to convince you to buy used. Or you might find used to be the obvious choice. Do your research, and create a rough spreadsheet calculating total cost of ownership (purchase price + taxes + any special up-front payments, then maintenance over the term, then gas, extended out to the life of the vehicle.)

I have no idea how you'd fit foru kids (plus one or two adults) and two big dogs and everyone's stuff into a B-segment car like the Fit.

As for the van's current needs, a good mechanic (possibly the one you currently use) can evaluate the overall condition of the van and advise you whether it would be worth spending ~$4k to address its current needs. It sounds a kind of marginal to me, as it is probably going to continue to need money to put into it.

How much you are able to spend for a replacement obviously strongly influneces your decision to keep your existing van, buy a less-used one, or buy a new or newish one.

For power users like you, I don't think it's at all unreasonable to buy even a new van, as it sounds like you'd be driving that one for a decade and many miles. Whether a couple of years old or (especially) new, it is possible to get a Grand Caravan new for under $20k (US) which is a hell of a value. I'd install a transmission oil cooler in any new van, though.

Basically what gimp said with regards to the transmission. When it goes, replace the van.

At 15,000 per year, and with such a large family, I wouldn't bother trying to play the used vehicle game. Buy new, and enjoy driving it until it dies in 10-12 years. Would you guys all fit in a Mazda 5? They are significantly cheaper than the Siennas/Odysseys.

I would think low miles 3-4 year old model would be the best bang for your buck but yea... buying 120k cars is probably out with you doing that many a year.

Thank you so much for all the advice!  We live in Arizona so the weather doesn't ruin cars especially since we keep ours in the garage.  No rust!  Our mechanic who I used to work with and trust told us when we picked it up to put no more money into it, drive it for 6 more months (there is nothing dangerously wrong), and then get rid of it.

Slightly used minivans are hard to find vs. the cost of new one when I look.  I am going to keep looking.

My husband wants a Nissan NV but the gas mileage is 5mph worse than the minivan but they are cheaper than the new minivan and can fit everything plus the inlaws who are often with us.

I found a manual fit and if I could turn off the airbag I would get it for the next year or two until we save more.  My heaviest kid is only 9 and 69lbs.  My 11 year old is only 55lbs.  Hmmm....

Your kids cannot legally nor safely sit in the front seat; abandon the air bag idea. Please.

2004 Toyota Sienna with 165,000 miles.  Kids can sit in the front seat as long as there is no air bag.

With camping gear and bikes, I'd stick with a minivan size vehicle. I'd keep an eye on <3 year old models, either Honda or Toyota. Someone said the Kias are finally reliable in the newest gen and are certainly a lot cheaper.

I love my minivan. It's so much more useful even when empty for hauling tools and supplies. When the kids are gone, however, I'll totally drop down to a Fit-like vehicle though. I love small hatches, especially manual.

What is the work needed besides the AT?

Run until it completely fails. Buy a 3-4 year replacement so you don't waste money on new car devaluation

Maybe I'm missing something - I kinda hope I am...

You've got; an 11 year old minivan w/ 166K miles.
The van needs $4K-$12K.
You need to save more for another van...

As I see it, you can NOT afford any family trips - for a while.  This is ESPECIALLY true if the minivan is your only vehicle.

I'd find a Sienna forum and find out how repairable the transmissions are AND how reliable remanufactured transmissions are - ASAP.   I'd use that info. as the primary decision factor.

I'd need to know what the $4k of work it needs is/are to advise any further / more specific.

We have an 04 Sienna with 180k miles.  I was kind of assuming it would go another 50k at least.  I'm willing to replace the transmission, I think.  What all else needs to be done?

We were hoping for 200,000 miles as well.  Right now it needs a right front lower control arm, power steering rack leaking (new rack and pin I believe), power steering lines leaking, needs new shocks and so far transmission looks fine but keeps making strange noises.  Then an alignment once fixed.  We are looking for a cheaper estimate.  I love my minivan.

We of course don't HAVE to travel but I am giving you all the entire picture.  We have another vehicle but it only seats 5 (Toyota T-100 V6) and that is with one kid in the front seat (it is a 97 so no airbag).  When we travel it is only the cost of the driving, we stay with friends and family for free, bring all our food and snacks, etc.  We live in the SW so there is lots of driving between the states where travel.

My current idea was to get a small car that would allow a kid in the front seat (airbag turned off) and sell the van.  Then we would save some more and eventually sell truck and husband would have a commuter car and we would get a new van.  My husbands work is 28 miles round-trip and he works from home several days a week.

I have a mazda5 with 2 kids.  I would not recommend it for 4 kids + dogs.

have you gotten another estimate from a different independent shop?
