Vegetarian broth in a box--still good?
« on: October 26, 2016, 11:14:01 AM »
In going through my pantry, I discovered a box of vegetarian broth in a box that was bought in Spring 2015. It's already expired, but I'm wondering: does this stuff actually go bad? Can I use it? How would I tell if it has gone bad?

Thanks, folks!

Does it say "sell by," "best by," or "use by"? I'd probably use it if it passed the sniff and taste test without smelling or tasting rotten.

I'm at work right now and can't recall what exactly the package says. The sniff and taste test sounds good. Thank you!

I'd make sure I brought it to a full boil for awhile and eat it. :P

Boiling sounds like a great idea!

Finally, here is what the box says: Recommended use by March 16, 2016.

Is that the equivalent of "best by"?

I think so. It says nothing about when the product will become unsafe to eat, it just expresses the manufacturer's possibly self-interested opinion of when the flavor might start to become less than perfect. An unopened container of broth almost certainly has a safe shelf life measured in years.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
