Valentine's Day Flowers
« on: February 15, 2022, 10:35:46 AM »
My guy brought home some Valentine's Day flowers for me after he got off work.

They are beautiful and smell wonderful!  I found out he got them from work for free, and then gave him a big smile and told him, "Really? AWESOME!"; he knows I'm all about saving money!  I then proceeded to smell the flowers again.

What a score. :)

(We're not big on buying each other gifts as we both like to save money; our love for each other is all that matters to us.)

I always try to avoid the window around Valentine's day, don't want to pay peak prices.

And certainly don't count on having them delivered! My fiancée tried to send her mom flowers for V-day yesterday, but they didn't make it despite the company's "guarantee". At least they returned the expedited delivery fee.

I live more than 1,500 km from my parents, but I have a local florist on whom I depend for delivering flowers to my mother on birthday and mother's day.

DH and I have never given one another Valentine's presents. This year, coincidentally we did for the first time.

I got him a cake from our local amazeballs French bakery, because it was gorgeous and I decided to preorder it and pick it up as a surprise.

He got me... a new toilet (and paid for a fairly tricky install, which is good because it turns out he wouldn't have been able to do it himself).

We were both joking that if money is an indicator of a good Valentine's gift, he loves me about 25 times more than I love him. LOL

Wife doesn't ever expect me to get her flowers/gifts...but it's a relatively small amount that I can spend on something that makes her happy...which makes me happy, so money well spent.

We don't do anything for Valentine's Day (other than I usually play around with a fun recipe or two), but this reminds me that when we were dating years ago, my husband occasionally left one flower or a small bunch of them in a glass or a jar on my kitchen counter while I was at work. I'm pretty sure he either picked them outside or got them cheap at the grocery store, but it was fun to discover them in my kitchen at the end of a long day that wasn't a holiday.

I still haven't formed a firm opinion on flowers. Plant reproductive organs that die in a week seem like an odd gift, but on the other hand, they're pretty, smell nice, and don't require the recipient to find a permanent place in their home for them or dust them for years to come!

Compared to everyone posting so far, I'm a spendypants at $14.  That's one single long stem rose ($4 and I had a vase at home), cheap bottle of wine ($6), a pound of strawberries ($3, small red and sweet) on sale, $1 cream for dipping.  Plus I made her a nice dinner, but we would have needed to eat anyway, so cost not factored in.

We decided that it would be nice to have flowers in the house this year, as it's been a rough couple of months and we wanted something to look forward to and to brighten up the house.  For $65 Costco delivered 50 roses (assortment of white, pink, and red), which I turned into several bouquets.  They arrived on the 10th and are still going strong, and we've greatly enjoyed them.  Most years we don't do flowers, but this year it was money well spent.

As for "gifts", $10.50 bought 3 Tony's Chocolonely slave-free chocolate bars (on sale), one for each of us here at home.  The away kid got a hand knit hat with a thick brim to cover frozen ears, and I sent it in a box of things that needed to be sent anyway.  I was lazy and bought 3 cards at Trader Joe's for 99¢ each, but DH printed my valentine at home.  Valentine's Day is always celebrated as a family holiday in our home and will continue to be so until the young adults make homes of their own.

DH won a free night at a local hotel.  We went out to dinner and then breakfast the next morning.  I bought him some chocolates that he likes and a scratch ticket, because he loves those stupid things.  (He won $30.)  He gave me a card with $500 in it. It is kind of a running joke.  He has this side gig that makes a few thousand each year on a sporadic basis.  He doesn't ever tell me when things come up, but saves the money to give me for the next holiday or event.

I got my DH some nice single origin chocolate bars to go with his coffee, and he got me a set of Godzilla themed hot sauces (which are two of my favorite things!)  We like to keep our Valentine's gifts small and meaningful.  And preferably tasty.  Best part of the day was the two of us making shrimp alfredo together.

I buy my SO a dozen roses at aldi each year for $10. We both like looking at them on the kitchen table for a week. It's more the thought she appreciates.

We buy ourselves tulips and Reese's hearts at the grocery store, often throughout the month of February.

My wife showed up with a Lego Flowers kit, so now we're building these flowers every night. It's a pretty cool project, and--here's where the ROI comes in--we can trot them out next year.

Now that sounds like fun!  A floral jigsaw puzzle would have similar benefits/appeal.
