I, personally, am terribly afraid of how I'll be perceived by my peers once I become a man of leisure. In fact, in order to combat that fear, I'm considering chaining myself to a cubical for 50 hours a week, 50 weeks a year, until I'm 67 years old. That way, even though I'll be missing out on a life of freedom and pleasure, I can avoid having to answer such terrifying inquires as "What do you do all day?" and "You rode a bike in the rain?".
I'm dead serious.
Geez really sorry about all this ... I always thought that MMM circumstances were unique in that he had saved money and got in on real estate right before a bubble and then got out which enabled him to retire early, but this is an unrealistic goal for others. I didn't realize how serious everyone was about this early retirement business.

I know Veblen mentions clergy and religious services as conspicuous leisure its not confined to driving a ferrari on the sun set strip or whatever.
