Tyre blew out on my car when away with work
« on: November 23, 2017, 02:26:48 AM »
I went to a conference last night 200 miles away for work, on the way home my tyre blew out on the freeway, late at night and during some lovely heavy rain.  I had to drive a few miles to get to an area with light to change it. Tyre totally ruined and not fixable.

I get fuel and food expenses for work.... should I claim for the tyre?

If they're paying you a mileage (or is it kilometreage in the UK?) reimbursement, then no, you shouldn't try to get reimbursed for the tire.  The mileage rate is supposed to cover all expenses associated with operating the car, including the portion of maintenance and repairs that the work trip contributes to.  You just got unlucky that the tire blew when you were traveling for work instead of personal reasons.

If, however, they are only reimbursing for actual fuel expenses, then you might try to get reimbursed for the tire.  But I suspect they are under no obligation to reimburse for it.  Does your company have a policy on use of personal vehicles for work?  Read it and see what they say about such expenses.

It's mileage.  We have exemptions from metric for pints and miles.

What Monkey Uncle said. What if your engine blew or you had an accident? Would you submit a several thousand dollar bill? The mileage rate is the "all-in" rate and all you should claim is the mileage (for all operating and depreciation expenses) and additional actual cash expenses for non-operational items (for parking, tolls, etc).

Fair enough I suppose! The mileage will pay for it, just...

Most blowouts are caused by underinflated tires/tyres, which is almost always preventable, so no, don't send the message to your employer that you may have been negligent in maintaining your vehicle. Use the mileage money to buy a new one and a decent air pressure gauge.

Good.  That's what I was going to suggest.  You submit it, and it's up to them to approve or reject it.  It's not like you were on your way to some concert or wedding.  You were on your way homee from a work conference!

Boy, I hope this is just a simple misunderstanding. I believe OP meant that she just submitted the mileage for reimbursement and didn't mention the tire/tyre.

Where she was and what she was doing when it happened are irrelevant.

Fun Fact: Met my nephew's new GF yesterday.  They met at the XYZ Tire Store. She worked there. Installing tires. Now she's studying to be a mechanic. He's a contractor, so this could be a mustachian match made in heaven.
I asked her about tire blowouts and she confirmed that they're usually caused by underinflation and/or sidewall damage, typically caused by hitting fixed objects, such as curbs.

Sorry to hear about the tire. On the bright side you had a blowout on the freeway at night and in heavy rain and only had a ruined tire. That is very lucky, I have seen a few really bad outcomes with tire failures.
