FWIW, occasional ridiculous meals are something I'll spend money on. Even then my wife and I don't typically order drinks. Two years ago we went to Eleven Madison Park for my birthday. It was amazing.

A new Costco opened in San Jose in June.  The store was crawling with police officers and private security for the first few days.  I asked one of the officers why.  He said it was because of the millions of dollars of jewelry in the display cases.  I laughed that off as silly, but there was a smash and grab jewelry robbery at another Costco a few days ago.  Given what the parking situation is in Bay Area Costcos, I wonder how the thieves got out of the parking lot before the police arrived.

It's called a bike...  A weird device preferred by readers of a blog named mrmoneymustache.com. ;-)

You want at least a Patek Philippe. :)

You can find those at Walmart. I'll pass.

Hey, do you get a discount on those for "ship to store"?

I wonder if it qualifies for the 3% back on Wal-Mart.com purchases if you use the Wal-Mart credit card?  If you could reliably flip that watch you'd end up with a decent profit.

Whole Foods sells morel mushrooms for something like $260/lb, and they're dried, not even fresh. The grow wild in my parents back yard. They are pretttty, prettty good.

Sounds like the key to a great side hustle.  Have you looked into selling them?

I don't live anywhere near my parents anymore, so not really. But other people in the area certainly do pick wild morels and sell them. Locally the price per pound is much lower during season, maybe $30/lb.

And, because it's Costco, you can buy it in bulk and save $40/pound:

It's pretty fun going mushroom hunting. I went with a couple of guys when I was in college. I'm too big of a chicken to go out myself. I know what they look like but it still makes me nervous I'll kill my whole family picking the wrong ones

I think about that when I drive 1 mile round trip to drop my kid at day care (can't walk, 8 lane highway crossing) and pass something like 2million in cars. not usually anything supercar level, just a ton of mercedes, bmw, etc. But then I remember that statistically, 75% of the people I pass have zero retirement savings, along with probably 20k+ CC debt.

I'm just starting out but I'm only 33, and I seem to be way ahead of most of my coworkers, even those in their late 50s or creeping up on 65.

I could sure go out and buy a few pounds of that steak to feed to my dog or mix with Steak-ums for sammiches, but why bother? not worth it for what I want to do...

And cooked well done.

With a side of chocolate cake.

and can of coke

Eh....a line or two maybe....but a whole can seems like overkill :)

ROFL I was going to suggest tossing them in the crock pot with a half bottle of ketchup and a can of coke (to avoid burning them) . . . but I cannot top this line or two.

My son has suddenly decided he needs to be more attractive to "the ladies" in middle school, and that, combined with his association with a couple of extremely flashy friends (who most certainly own fakes but he can't tell the difference), has recently led to the following items being put on his wish list:
Rolex watch
gold chain
Gucci watch
Gucci belt
Versace flip flops (yes, they make flip flops. Who knew?)

I responded to this by making him watch the Thiftshop music video and generously gifting him a men's heavy gold link bracelet that I literally found on the pavement in an empty parking lot about 20 years about. He has already lost the bracelet . . . no longer seems to want the gold stuff at least.

Who eats red meat anyway? Jeez. May as well inject cholesterol directly into your arteries.

My apologies for being pedantic, but there is actually research coming to light questioning that dietary cholesterol has any significant effect on your own cholesterol. Your body actually regulates cholesterol and reduces it's own production when larger quantities are consumed.

Nah, I don't think that's true from my own personal experience. I had a problem with cholesterol, so I cut back severely on eating meat. The problem disappeared within a couple of months. I don't doubt there's a genetic component, but changing diet definitely makes a difference.

Yes, clearly your personal experience trumps any actual science.

I have the same sentiment about the cars. I live in a super rich town in California, and it seems everyone is either driving some fancy car I've never seen before or a beater. I wonder how well the car model correlates with savings. I don't envy them but find it annoying when they accelerate unnecessarily fast through the neighborhood.

There was a documentary on Netflix about a butcher going all over the world looking to find the best steak.  Apparently it is at a place in Spain where they raise the bulls themselves for about 15 years, cook them to perfection etc. etc.  A steak dinner there was about E70.  Pricey, but if it is the best steak in the world...

I won't be buying bulk Wagyu beef from Costco, nor will it ever be a part of my daily life to buy outrageously priced foods, but if I ever find myself near that place (and I might, Spain is awesome), then you can bet I'll be making a night of it.

That said, I can see some people who would prioritize having certain types of food over other things.  I love to cook and would rather spend money on high quality ingredients for a special event than on eating out somewhere else...

That's RAW.  They don't even cook it for you!  I'm not getting my kitchen dirty and paying for it too.

I pointed out to my DH that the price online included shipping and he said,  "and a flat screen tv?" 😀

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
