Time for Face Punches!!!!
« on: May 27, 2014, 11:23:57 AM »
So I'm looking at my year to date expenses and I am in dire need of some face punches!

1.  Entertainment category is about $250 higher than where it should be so far.  I group booze into that category and we spent way too much on wine this year + a night of bowling with friends that somehow turned into $100 (bowling, dinner, beer)
2. Utilities were up 10% year over year.  Natural gas prices were higher, however we also used abit more I reckon.  Shoulda worn more sweaters!  This was about an $80 hit
3.  I am paying $40 a month for a smartphone that doesn't receive email anymore.  Ugh, could easily switch to prepaid and save $20 a month.  I am in Canada where options are abit more limited admittedly
4.  Bought my girlfriend a $250 birthday gift.  We had a rule whereby we don't buy each other anything beyond dinner maybe.  Broke it.  Not good!
5.  I somehow spent $10 on lotto tickets!!! WTF man wake up!!!!
6.  This is not new for this year, but I normally drive home for lunch.  10 minutes one way, but adds up to about $35 per month in Gas.  I think I will let this one slide as I really don't want to be at work more than I have to.  My 8 hour day is plenty IMO!!  If I stayed there thru lunch it would be 9 hours straight...ummm, prison anyone???

All told this is about $1000+ out the window and the year isn't half over yet.  I will give myself some credit though as I expect to spend less than $24K this year and that includes a furnace replacement of about 4K

Since you live just a 10 minute drive from work, can you bike that commute instead?

Also for transportation, why not pack a lunch to eat at work? Then you can go for a walk or run during the rest of your lunch break. That's what plenty of my co-workers do in our office.

The things that seem in need of fixing:

$250 gifts - not necessary and now you've set precedence and broke the agreement you guys had - this should never be repeated!  :)
Driving home for lunch?  WTF?  Surely you can think of more productive things to do during lunch?  Some of the things that I do: do my grocery shopping (store the perishables in the company fridge), eat in my car or outside and take care of planning activities (honey-do lists, meal planning, etc.), read a good book, call my Dad, take a nap....you get the idea.  Also, can you take a shorter lunch and leave earlier?

The other things (i.e. natural gas usage) are all fixable and just up to you to be mindful.  It is amazing though how all the little things really do add up to big money!

If it takes 10 minutes to drive . . . how much more or less would it take you to walk?  Unless it's miles away and won't work out.  (Eg:  I worked at my last job only 8 miles away - not walkable and not bike-rideable as this is a rural area - no sidewalks - and I didn't want to be SQUISHED on the dirt roads by the guys in their pick up trucks rushing to who knows where.)

I do sometimes do productive things at lunch such as running errands and whatnot.  Thing is that we are in an industrial area in middle of nowhere so driving to those places is about 10 minutes - same as it is to drive home.  If I have no errands to run then I prefer to go home and hang out with our dogs or my girlfriend if she is home too.

No we can't take 1/2 hour lunch and go home 1/2 hour early.  I'm a manager there and tried asking for this for my employees (and myself included of course) and let's just say our workplace is extremely archaic and their response was basically why would anyone want to do that?  ROFL

This thread was more about coming clean with your own Face Punches.  We all have these "leaks" we need to improve on.  I'm just coming clean with mine!

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
