Things to do in/around Madison, WI?
« on: September 23, 2015, 09:52:56 AM »
My bf and I are taking a road trip to Madison over the weekend of Oct 9-11 for my birthday.  I know there are a lot of WI folks around the forums and was hoping for some ideas of things to do.  We are driving from the Lake Winnebago area so anything along the way is also good.  Does anybody have some 'must see/do' ideas?  It looks like there are lots of places to hike and boat if the weather holds but being October and WI, that isn't a guarantee.  Any interesting indoor places to explore?  So far my indoor idea list is short and consists of a tour of the Capitol :/

I'm also taking recommendations of places to eat.  Since our hotel is free with CC points and includes breakfast, we don't mind a spendy meal/activity or two.

Devil's Lake SP. Any section of the Kettle Moraine SF, especially since fall colors will be near peak.

Ale Asylum brewery. My favorite brewery in a state chock full of excellent brewmasters.

If you like farmers markets, the one in Madison is supposed to be epic, and October is a great time to shop at FMs.

I'm much more familiar with Milwaukee, unfortunately.

The farmer's market is fantastic, but go early because the crowds are crazy.

Try the deep dish pizza at Gino's on State St.  Takes about 45 minutes to cook but it's worth it.

Actually, there are myriad things just on State St - just be careful in the bars, it's called Mad Town for a reason.

I'd also recommend walking around in the Capitol building, it's massive and quite beautiful.  Plus you can fart outside of Walker's office if you are so inclined ;)
