the stars all have them, why not us?
« on: October 14, 2015, 08:15:58 AM »
got a Deal email today, the famed Birkin bag:

http://www.beyondtherack.com/product/HER1413KH77?event=64534&filter[size]=&sortBy=&category=0

It's retail price is $18,999 so this is a steal (for the ugliest Birkin ever, no actresses on year-long waiting lists for this one). 19k. Even if I had set my family and future generations up for life and 19k meant nothing to me, I would not buy this Birkin or any normal looking one.  Yet actresses, socialites are photographed with one all the time. They are ubiquitous, you would think they would not all want to look the same? I get people want nice things, this just happens to be one that I find sad. Think of the good you could do with that money. 19k is more than what I spent on my cheap car!

Named after Jane Birkin, I always thought of her as this mellow, artsy sort and never understood why her name is associated with the purse. She was on a plane and everything fell out of her bag when she put it in the overhead. Seated next to the Hermes CEO, she complained she could not find a good leather carry-all.  He had a bag made and named for her.  She later complained that it was too heavy, it hurt her arm, made a comment that why would a person need 2? Stopped carrying it and this year, she is asking for her name be removed from the bag.  OMG, without her name, they will surely drop to at least 15K! Start saving. Hermes stock may plummet, lol

So, what... now it's not just keeping up with the Joneses, but actually keeping up with celebrities?  Will mainstream consumer culture stupidity ever reach a limit?

Awwww....how sad. Luckily you can still probably pick up a cheap Coach purse for 10k or so, right?

<insert eye roll>

The irony is that on the Tiny House show they had someone who wanted a lower end build for like 20K. So one bag, plus a little more could have bought an extremely small house. Sad.

At what point do you think people will start taking mortgages on their purses?

I didn't know Tiny Houses were that cheap, wow.

Well, if they take a mortgage on a Birken (or whatever they are going to have to call it now), according to Jane Birkin, they are huge, maybe they will live in their Birkins.  Disgusting.

I try not to be judge-y, we all have things we probably shouldn't have spent the money on or make so much at work, no one is dependent on that money so have at it. Not my business.  I have a purse problem, but my purses cost $20-$40 on some clearance deal (except one Coach, found in the bottom of the clearance bin at an outlet, $99, I love it and use it all the time but that was totally out of character for me).  But I eventually stopped, realizing this was a bad habit that needed attention. However, Birkin made me judge away today.

Well, not a mortgage, maybe. Probably just a 7 year car-type loan: that's about the same price point as a new Corolla.

There was a yellow railroad car-looking caboose type tiny home for 20k or so. And then there was one where they did a lot of the work and estimated it cost them 22k for a big two story one.

Confession: I have a 'thing' for shoes. OK...now they're all work/hike kinda shoes. And maybe 3 pair of dance shoes. So I guess we all have our gimmes. But all the shoes I've bought or WILL BUY in my lifetime won't total 3k, total.

Whew!

Ho-lee-shiz!

This reminds me of a guy I work with, his wife spends obscene amounts of cash on purses and dogs.  Once I asked him if he ever put thought into how much it really costs him long term.  He said, "At least the purses don't die."  Based on what I know, he has added ~10 working years to his life.  Makes me a little ill thinking about that!

I have to admit that I didn't even know what a "Birken" bag was until last year.   Seriously, what does it cost to make this bag?   There are youtube videos of women opening their 'Birken' when they get it home, I was so curious I just had to watch one...  crazy.

I guess a so called 'wait list' is phony.  It just helps to drive up the price.

I just now saw this.  They get a little more expensive!

Maybe when they lose the endorsement, they can "rename" it by adding an apostrophe, so that it becomes the Birkin'.

As in "What kind of Birkin' idiot pays $20K for a purse?"

I took my Mom to get her hair cut the other day and to kill time I did laps at the mall. I got a big kick of a large hanging sign that advertised "Vacation Loans"...loans for the life you want! Baahahaha! It showed a couple hugging over looking the beach and said "We dreamed of this vacation for years".

Hmm, seems pretty simple construction.

So, find or rent a  leather sewing machine, pick up a worn but real leather coat from thrift store, sew away?

Work with local cobbler and pay that person to assemble?

For $200, I bet you could create something nice together...

I love the headline: "Why a $223,000 Hermes Birkin bag might actually be a good investment?" and it was not the Onion.  I love how they say you cannot even see them online at their own site because, well, a woman who wants one would not be trolling the internet for one.  Yet they are on a deal site, Tumble Deal.

lmao at renaming them Birkin'.  I'm really looking forward to how they are going to handle the loss of the brand name.

I've seen the fakes that were still too expensive for me and honestly, I don't even like them and I adore from afar nice bags.  No shoulder strap, so Jane was right about lugging it around and they've been around so long, (I'm assuming I am seeing fake ones with a few exceptions, like a few moms at the kid's school) I am sick of them.

Sex and City gave them a boost for sure

I would imagine a lot of the celebs don't pay for them... just like dresses they are on loan or gifts so the manufacturer can get the best kind of advertising.

lol.  Or what are called PUHs, personal umbrella holders to the stars. I think P Diddy, or whatever he is called now, started the trend.  He and Snoop Dog have the best dressed PUHs, because how your PUH dresses is a reflection on you.
