I believe the Mad Fientist has a great post on this topic, but it's amazing what having money in the bank will do for you.
My hubby and I have been doing very well in the savings department, but since having a kid our opposite schedules no longer work for us. He works nights, I work days. We mutually decided that a move to be closer to family is in our best interest for support and so that our little one will grow up near her grandparents, cousins and aunts and uncles.
After some procrastination (maybe a precursor to one more year syndrome), I spoke with my boss about leaving and setting up a plan to do so. Much to my surprise, she offered me a remote working situation and addressed all my concerns. There is also an opportunity on the table for some of my expenses to be covered associated with travel, moving and housing expenses.
My husband proceeded to talk with his boss who offered him a telecommuting option too. He politely declined to get out of working nights.
Amazing. We are going down to one income which will challenge our savings rate a bit, but I think we'll get creative (tips are welcome). We will also eliminate one car and all it's associated expenses as well as daycare. I'm really looking forward to this next chapter in our lives.
