It wasn't just the consumerism, it was also the braggy "must create super elite little humans" with comparisons over scheduled activities.  e.g. said by a SAHM with a weekly house cleaner, regular take-out/eating out "Oh I'm so busy, ramblez you just have no idea"...

These families make me laugh so much.  Ohh poor SAH parent so busy with all that extracurricular actvities . No time for him/herself.  What a bunch of bs.
Oh man, that is my pet peeve!  Whenever anyone tells me how super-busy they are.  I work with someone who will talk for 20 minutes about how busy he is when I have a simple yes/no question.  It makes me crazy.  Sometimes I want to scream "I actually have work that I have to get to, so I can't listen to all of your phony excuses about why you can't answer one . simple . fucking . question!"

For the SAHP -- it is crazy because it is self-inflicted..not because it isn't real...  Crazy many people do not see that "giving the best XX to Johnny" is a choice, not an obligation!    I do feel sorry for those ones, but just stay out of their way.

Ahh. I know that well. I dated a person like this for awhile. "Hey Metric, I have something super important to say about what you're doing (X). I was going to call that guy about X, so I did, and I had to wait on hold for awhile, and while I was on hold I was thinking about how we were talking about Y. Why aren't you doing Y again? Oh, yeah, I know, but I wonder if Y is right anyway. Anyway, the guy was really rude, he said "I've never done X before, why would anyone do X?" so I got pissed and... " - No. Stop. Just Stop. Tell me about X.

I think it's meant to say that the person was rambling on and on without actually getting to the point (which is X).

full disclosure: I didn't read every post up to this point, so maybe it has already been brought up.

I have this happen to me all the time, then I steer the conversation to how much they are spending on these "things". I ask about their car payments, etc..... Then I remember "Oh wait, I don't have any of those" and "If I wanted to I could go get money out of the bank right now and go buy it with cash".... Then I suddenly feel a lot better : )

I totally know what you mean though.... In another forum, my signature reads "If you think its tough keeping up with the Joneses, try ignoring them"
